The regional smart specializations include the innovative activities within a common science-economy-technology sector, which open the opportunities to gain a competitive advantage. The original procedure of science-economy-technology concordance matrix development on an example of smart specializations of the Silesian Voivodeship was presented in the paper. The procedure developed includes recognition of the research and economic components of the regional smart specialization and the connection between the economic components of the regional specialization and the technological innovation through the international patent classification. It also comprises recognition of key enabling technologies (KETs) and high technologies (of high R&D intensity) other than KET in the economic and technological dimensions of innovation as well as the high R&D intensity services in the economic dimension of innovation. The in-depth expert analyses with the application of the Delphi method were also taken into account. The methodological approach developed and the visualization method applied are both of cognitive and practical importance since they contribute significantly to the creation of efficient development policies, to the enhancement and facilitation of cross-sectoral cooperation, and to the focusing on the fields of key importance in terms of the competitive advantage of a region.

This paper investigates the relevance of patents as a competitive advantage with regard to the luxury industry. Within the framework of an explorative research design, more than two thousand patents were analyzed, using the international patent classification (IPC) to cluster those patents. The analysis shows that the sole ownership of patents as a resource is not sufficient to achieve business success. In addition, the findings suggest a two-sided relevance of patents within the luxury goods industry as two main groups can be identified: First, traditional manufacturers focusing more on craftmanship, secrecy, and tradition than on novelties and patents. Second, large business groups and high technology businesses dominating the IPC group G04 and emphasizing on the latest technology as well as on patents. Furthermore, the internationalization is also reflected in the patent applications: European patents within category G04 have gained in importance over the last 20 years, while national patents have declined.

The main objective of this chapter is to analyze the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and competitive advantage on Portuguese exporting textiles small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, a quantitative methodological approach was used, conducting a descriptive, exploratory, and transversal empirical study, having applied a questionnaire to a sample of Portuguese SMEs, associated of the Portuguese textile association (ATP). The structural equations model was used for this purpose, using the partial least squares (PLS). Based on survey data from 247 firms, the empirical results indicate that 1) innovation have a positive and significant impact on differentiation, 2) proactivity and risk-taking does not have a positive and significant impact on differentiation, and 3) innovation, proactivity, and risk-taking does not have a positive and significant impact on cost leadership. This study shows that Portuguese textile SMEs seek to support and stimulate new ideas, experimentation, and creativity that surely result in new products, services, and processes.

Taiwan experienced a sharp deceleration in economic growth in the second quarter of 2015. If Taiwan's exports continue to deteriorate, Taiwan would have to struggle to maintain a one per cent growth rate. Taiwan's economic conundrums mainly lie with its deteriorating industrial structure. Without deepening industrial structural upgrades and reforms in the information and communications technology sector in particular, Taiwan will lose its international competitive advantage.

The study aims to determine the main indicators of rural smart development concept for territorial development analysis and decision-making in Vidzeme region (Latvia). In the framework of the study the theoretical literature and planning documents were analysed, focusing on the indicators of rural areas and sustainable development. For a long time the development was associated primarily with the economic growth - GDP, employment and income growth. In recent years, the economic dimension is supplemented with social, environmental, cultural and political aspects. A holistic approach interprets close relations and balanced integration between the economic, social, political, ecological and cultural dimensions of local and regional development. Such approach requires the search for new indicators that describe the development of rural areas and are directly relevant to each individual area. The results present that in the development of Vidzeme smart specialization, the local governments and the state has the greatest impact. It is most affected by the local government's capacity to develop cooperation with residents and entrepreneurs, and a stable and sustainable economic situation in the country.

The ability of entrepreneurs to produce new products is fundamental, because the organisational environment changes rapidly. Changes in socio-economic systems, changes in the expectations and needs and desires of customers, are challenges faced by organisations through new products or services as well. Innovations created by companies are the key to competitive advantage that determines the success of an organisation (Kuratko, 2015; Urbancova, 2012). Talent development is the driver of innovation. Therefore, current research focuses on to study the employee perception talent development impact on innovation. KEY WORDS: Strategy, Structure, Climate, Culture, Socio-Economic System.

The main goal of this study is to analyze the factors that in the internationalization’s process of Portuguese companies that allows to understand the contributions of the competitive advantage that influenced export performance. This will assess how the internationalization’s strategies, considering the competitive advantage as well its interaction with the market’s characteristics, may lead companies, on the one hand, to the implementation of strategies for success, and, on the other, and to the top performances of its export activity. In this context embarked by the qualitative methodology, we used the case study method, regarding to the single case of the largest and the most representative Portuguese multinational company of the electromechanical sector (EFACEC), thus enabling a holistic and integrated vision of organizational phenomena object of study. This methodological option allowed objectify results of practical importance, which will contribute to a lower dispersion in companies’ strategic internationalization process, accentuating the assertiveness of its exporting activity. As main conclusions we highlight the fact of internationalization’s strategies positively influence competitive advantage which, in turn, positively influence the export performance, and this one is positively influenced by markets’ characteristics.

The aim of the article is to study the existing and find new approaches to the analysis of creative, information and knowledge-based factors that determine social transformations and economic growth of the EU regions based on smart specialization. The methodological approaches to the assessment of the implementation of creative, information and knowledge-based factors in the economy are studied. A comparative analysis of international and regional systems for evaluating creative, information and knowledge-based factors of economic growth is made. A system of indicators of the authors’ three-vector approach (by the directions: (1) intellectualization of economy, (2) digitalization of economy and society, (3) technological modernization) to the analysis of creative, information and knowledge-based factors in the realization of the smart specialization model at a regional level are developed. The developed authors’ technique allows providing a comprehensive approach to the analysis of creative, information and knowledge-based factors in terms of the smart specialization model at the regional level. The methodology involves three groups of indicators in the areas of intellectualization, digitalization, and technological modernization. The calculation of the integral index is carried out based on the method of multidimensional weighted value taking into account the degree of the weight of indicators and sub-indices (subgroups and groups of indicators). The scientific novelty of the study is that the integral index allows making important analytical conclusions about the level of development of creative, information and knowledge-based economy, as well as the correlation of these processes with the socio-economic development of regions. The methodological approach can be implemented in domestic practice for evaluating the impact of the use of creative, information and knowledge-based factors on the development of regional economies and, accordingly, for achieving the objectives of regional smart specialization strategies.

Objective: To justify the research methodology, main concepts and efficiency estimation of air transportation logistics hub (AvTLU) in the process of “Airport–Air carrier–ATM” systems interaction for the purpose of improving the level of regularity and integrated safety of flight preparation and operation. Methods: The methods of classification of AvTLU objects interaction, as well as the method of structural vertical-horizontal decomposition of AvTLU were applied. The threedimensional matrix model of “Airport–Air carrier–ATM” systems interaction was described, as well as “Aircraft commercial readiness for flight”, which makes it possible to consider the setting-up procedures of units as internal logistical operations. Results: Methodologies of studying AvTLU were developed. AvTLU decomposition was fulfilled, as well as the simulation method based on the three-dimensional matrix was justified. The possibility of building a mathematical model of efficiency assessment of AvTLU operation performance, its subsystems and units, in the process of elements and component values interaction, was justified. Practical importance: The introduced methodologies make it possible to study the systems of other types of transport and their interaction. Mathematical model facilitates determination of the component values in the process of their interaction during operation performance in AvTLU.
