The aim of this paper is to develop a new frequency response function- (FRF-) based indirect inverse substructuring method without measuring system-level FRFs in the coupling DOFs for the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of a three-substructure coupled product transport system with rigid and flexible coupling. By enforcing the dynamic equilibrium conditions at the coupling coordinates and the displacement compatibility conditions, a closed-form analytical solution to inverse substructuring analysis of multisubstructure coupled product transport system is derived based on the relationship of easy-to-monitor component-level FRFs and the system-level FRFs at the coupling coordinates. The proposed method is validated by a lumped mass-spring-damper model, and the predicted coupling dynamic stiffness is compared with the direct computation, showing exact agreement. The method developed offers an approach to predict the unknown coupling dynamic stiffness from measured FRFs purely. The suggested method may help to obtain the main controlling factors and contributions from the various structure-borne paths for product transport system.

The dynamic response of a direct lube, 5-pad, rocker-back pivot tilting pad bearing is characterized in a controlled motion (component level) test rig, and in a spin bunker (full system level) using a dummy rotor mounted on two identical bearings. In the component level test, the force coefficients (stiffness, damping, mass) are identified from pseudorandom excitations using a 2-DOF model. N-DOF system including the pad motions has been shown to yield frequency dependent coefficients that warrant the use of asynchronous coefficients for stability analysis in centrifugal compressors. However, experimental results showed that the real part of the dynamic stiffness is well represented as a constant stiffness and mass coefficients while the imaginary part yields a constant damping coefficient (i.e. frequency independent). In the system level test, a dedicated dummy rotor (representative of a high speed centrifugal compressor rotor) is excited by a magnetic shaker throughout a frequency range covering the rotor modes of interest while spinning at constant speed. From the rotor harmonic response the damping of each mode is extracted using a curve-fitting method based on a 1-DOF model for a given set of speeds. The dummy rotor test provides reference values for system logarithmic decrement and further validates the component level test results. The logarithmic decrement prediction using identified bearing force coefficients are in good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, using for prediction identified coefficients in a classical K-C-M or synchronous K-C form yields similar results (within 15%). This indicates that for the given bearing geometry (clearance, offset and size) and operating conditions, synchronously reduced force coefficients are adequate for stability analysis. Comparison of the identified force coefficients with results from commercially available code yielded reasonable agreement on direct coefficients while some discrepancies are highlighted on the cross-coupled coefficients.

For suspension components, bench testing for strength is mostly accomplished at component level. However, replicating loading and boundary conditions at the component level in order to simulate the suspension system environment may be difficult. Because of this, the component's bench test failure mode may not be similar to its real life failure mode in vehicle environment. A suspension system level bench test eliminates most of the discrepancies between simulated component level and real life vehicle level environments resulting in higher quality bench tests yielding realistic test results. Here, a suspension level bench test to estimate the strength of its trailing arm link is presented. A suspension system level nonlinear finite element model was built and analyzed using ABAQUS software. The strength loading was applied at the wheel end. The analysis results along with the hardware test correlations are presented. The reasons why a system level test is superior to a component level one are also highlighted.

It has been a well-established fact that dynamic systems in motion experience critical speeds, such as rotating shafts and geared systems whose undeformed reference geometry remain the same at all times. Their critical speeds are determined by their natural frequencies of considered type of free vibrations. Linkage mechanisms as dynamic systems in motion change their undeformed geometries as function of time during the cycle of kinematic motion. They do also experience critical operating speeds as rotating shafts and geared systems do, and their critical speeds are determined by the minima of their natural frequencies during a cycle of kinematic motion. Such a minimum occurs at the critical geometry of a mechanism, which is the position at which the maximum of the input power is required to maintain the instantaneous dynamic equilibrium of the mechanism. Actual finite line elements are used to form the global generalized coordinate flexibility matrix. The natural frequencies of the mechanism and the corresponding mode vectors (mode deflections) are determined as the eigen values and eigen vectors of the equations of instantaneous-position-free-motion of the mechanism. Method is formulated to include or exclude the link axial deformations, and apply to any number of loops having any type of planar pair. Critical speeds of planar four-bar, slider-crank, and Stephenson’s six-bar mechanisms are determined. Experimental results for the four-bar mechanism are given. Effect of axial deformations and link rotary inertias are investigated. Inclusion of link axial deformations in mechanisms having pairs with sliding freedoms is seen to predict critical speeds with large error.

The investigations following the unacceptable performance of moment resisting frames (MRFs) in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake led to the development of a variety of alternative ductile connections. Tests have shown that these connections have reliable component-level performance, leading to them being recommended in standards worldwide as pre-qualified for MRFs. Current design practice consists of applying a single type of ductile connection, often the reduced beam section (RBS), uniformly throughout an entire frame. These connections are detailed and inspected to ensure that each connection has a similar minimum deformation capacity throughout the building, regardless of local deformation demands.This paper examines the potential design implications of identifying local areas within a MRF having the greatest joint rotational demands. Once identified, the connections at these locations are deemed critical to the global performance of the frame. First, the collapse analysis of a six-storey MRF with well-detailed RBS connections was conducted to quantify an upper bound system-level performance. Thereafter, a lower bound system-level performance was determined by considering a frame constructed using only connections with a lowered rotational capacity. Subsequent series of analyses were conducted to identify critical locations within the frame where RBS connections must have a high reliable rotational capacity to ensure adequate system-level performance.

Offshore wind turbines are becoming increasingly popular due to their higher wind energy harnessing capabilities and lower visual pollution. Researchers around the globe have been reporting significant scientific advancements in offshore wind turbines technology, addressing key issues, such as aerodynamic characteristics of turbine blades, dynamic response of the turbine, structural integrity of the turbine foundation, design of the mooring cables, ground scouring and cost modelling for commercial viability. These investigations range from component-level design and analysis to system-level response and optimization using a multitude of analytical, empirical and numerical techniques. With such wide-ranging studies available in the public domain, there is a need to carry out an extensive yet critical literature review on the recent advancements in offshore wind turbine technology. Offshore wind turbine blades’ aerodynamics and the structural integrity of offshore wind turbines are of particular importance, which can lead towards system’s optimal design and operation, leading to reduced maintenance costs. Thus, in this study, our focus is to highlight key knowledge gaps in the scientific investigations on offshore wind turbines’ aerodynamic and structural response. It is envisaged that this study will pave the way for future concentrated efforts in better understanding the complex behavior of these machines.

Structural vibration analysis is used to suppress unwanted vibrations in many areas such as aerospace engineering, manufacturing, defense, automotive, etc. As a result of suppressing the unwanted vibration, the quality of the product is improved. Focusing on the minimization of the vibration amplitudes via a concept of receptance, a new and efficient method for calculating the receptance of a translational mass-spring-damper system with N masses and M absorbers (where N and M are any positive integer) is developed. The receptance of the combined system, in terms of the parameters of the main and absorber systems is derived, separately. The optimal parameters of the absorbers are then found. A methodology is derived using dynamic stiffness and linear graph representation in order to verify the dynamic stiffness, i.e., the inverse of the receptance, of the system.
