The global problem of access to improved sanitation and water management practices has been compounded by the gap existing between knowledge and practice as well as attitude. The aim of this study was to assess households' knowledge and attitude on water, sanitation, and hygiene practices through a school health programme. Semistructured questionnaires, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and observation checklist were used to obtain information from 95 households which were systematically sampled. It was found that a school programme may not improve the gap between knowledge, attitude, and practice but may be good for future generations. This was found to be due to sociocultural issues which impede hygiene transformation. The implication is that health programmes must find innovative ways of bridging this gap in order to bring change in households through culture sensitive interventions.

(1) Background: Residents of Dhaka slums frequently lack clean and functional shared latrines. We explored the role of landlords and compound managers in promoting latrine cleanliness in the intervention arm of a randomized trial; (2) Methods: We conducted focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and in-depth interviews with community health promoters, landlords, and compound managers to better understand the decision-making process, barriers to contributing to sanitation, and cleanliness of shared latrines. (3) Results: Landlords’ and compound managers’ engagement in promoting clean and functional latrines depended, in part, on their own proximity to the properties they own and manage. The compound managers played a leadership role through engagement with health promoters, oversight of implementation of a cleaning schedule, and support for installation and maintenance of sanitation hardware, resulting in improved sanitation practices; (4) Conclusions: Interventions in slums in Bangladesh should consider engaging landlords and compound managers in efforts to bring about structural and organizational changes to support the adoption of improved water, sanitation, and hygiene practices.

Abstract Background: In Guinea, the incidence and prevalence of children in public primary schools to common disease, e.g., diarrhoeal, malaria, fever, etc. remained pretty high mainly because of the poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions and practices. We aimed to evaluate the impacts of WASH conditions in and out of school, health education programs, and the behavioral determinants of pupils on the incidence and prevalence of children. Methods: A questionnaire was designed to collect necessary information on current hygiene conditions of all the studied primary schools, the WASH practices in and out of schools, and the incidence and prevalence of these pupils. The data were collected via a survey of the pupils (n = 1048) from five public primary schools in the center of the city of N’Zerekore, Guinea between December 2018 and May 2019. Using a social survey (questionnaire survey), face-to-face interviews with the headmasters and the teachers of several selected schools, data collection was based on students' knowledge of hygiene practices associated with WASH, hand washing situations in and out of school.Results: It reveals that the WASH conditions in all five schools are inadequate. The water access and quality in four schools over all the five schools are greatly limited by the boreholes or unprotected dug wells. The scarcity of essential hygiene kits, especially in the latrines, disinclined the pupils to use the toilets in schools. The WASH and health educations are also invalid in all schools, and therefore the pupils were ineffectively influenced to change their unhealthy WASH behaviors. Our data indicated that 100% (n = 1048) of pupils don’t wash their hands with soap after defecation in school, and over 87.9% (n = 922) of students don’t wash hands before eating. All the above determinants result in a high incidence and prevalence of children among these pupils, including malaria, typhoid, diarrhea, etc.Conclusion: To improve the WASH conditions and to change the pupils’ unhealthy behaviors in the long term, some effective interventions including the provision of clean water and sanitation and hygiene infrastructure, as well as widespread and effective health education should be implemented.

Background : Poor Housing condition, sanitation and hygiene is associated with adverse health conditions. This study is done to assess the housing conditions, sanitation coverage and hygiene practices among rural community in Bhaudaha VDC, eastern Nepal.Material &Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted from 22nd May 2016 to 22nd November 2016 in Bhaudaha VDC of eastern Nepal with appropriated sample size of 525 participants. A direct interview was taken with structured questionnaire. Chi square test was used to find out association of the variables.Results: Out of 525 respondents, adequate ventilation was present among 54.9% literates followed by 44.2% illiterates (p=0.01) and separate kitchen was also found among 77.2% of literates and 64.6% of illiterates (p=0.002). Among Dalit castes 74.4% had separate kitchen in their house followed by 50.7% janajatis (p<0.001). Covering of stored water was found in 75.8% Dalit and 61.2% Janajati (P=0.003). Improved sanitation was highest among other terai casts (78.1%) followed by Dalits (59.9%) and 58.2% Janajati (p=0.132).Conclusion: There is need of appropriate methods of health education to be focused on all the groups in the community for improvement in sanitation and healthy housing conditions and targeted more towards Janajati and illiterate group and further studies need to be done in different region of Nepal to understand the cause of disparities in housing and sanitation conditions among different groups.Journal of Nobel Medical CollegeVolume 6, Number 2, Issue 11 (July-December, 2017) Page: 1-8

Purpose: To scope the potential for eye health programme to be integrated into Zanzibar School Health programme, through the lenses of stakeholders Methods: Embedded into an operational research project integrating eye and School health, we elicited responses from 83 participants, purposefully selected from the Ministry of Health (n=7), Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (n=7), hospitals/eye centres (n=5), master trainers (4) and schools (n=60) participated in in-depth interviews. Their responses were analysed and grouped into four pre-determined themes of Human Resource Training, Resources Mobilisation, Acceptability, and Leadership and Governance. Quotations are presented to illustrate the findings. Results: In line with the four research themes, i) The integrated school eye health programme training was satisfactory, with room for improvement, ii) Child eye health screening conducted by teachers was well-received, with concerns and suggestions to improve its effectiveness and efficiency, iii) Integration of eye health into the school health programme is perceived as a good initiative, but to increase referral, service uptake and spectacle usage, primary care units must be equipped, and eye health awareness needs to be improved, iv) Departmental roles, resources, gaps and synergies to ensure eye health is successfully integrated into the school health programme. Conclusion: The concept of integrated school eye health delivery is generally well-received by beneficiaries and stakeholders within an operational research project in Zanzibar, with the caveat that investment is required for effective referral and update.
