The implementation of variable artificial roughness patterns on a surface is an effective technique to enhance the rate of heat transfer to fluid flow in the ducts of solar air heaters. Different geometries of roughness elements investigated have demonstrated the pivotal role that vortices and associated turbulence have on the heat transfer characteristics of solar air heater ducts by increasing the convective heat transfer coefficient. In this paper we investigate the two-dimensional, turbulent, unsteady flow around rectangular ribs of variable aspect ratios by directly solving the transient Navier-Stokes and continuity equations using the finite elements method. Flow characteristics and several aspects of turbulent flow are presented and discussed including velocity components and statistics of turbulence. The results reveal the impact that different rib lengths have on the computed mean quantities and turbulence statistics of the flow. The computed turbulence parameters show a clear tendency to diminish downstream with increasing rib length. Furthermore, the applied numerical method is capable of capturing small-scale flow structures resulting from the direct solution of Navier-Stokes and continuity equations.

“Twin jets in Crossflow” is a common configuration that finds application in several large and/or small scale industrial fields. The interest in such a configuration is further enhanced by its dependence in several parameters, that may be geometric, dynamic, thermal, or relative to the handled fluid composition. We propose to focus in the present work on the effect of the number of the emitted jets on the generated heat transfer, in presence of an unchanged uniform crossflow. To reach this goal, single, double and triple jet configurations were simulated, based upon the resolution of the Navier Stokes equations by means of the RSM (Reynolds Stress Model) second order turbulent closure model, together with a non uniform grid system particularly tightened near the emitting nozzles. After validation, we tried to find out the impact of the number of the handled jets on their cooling “power” by tracking the temperature distribution of the resulting flowfield. Since in practically all applications we are in need of higher efficiencies and then of higher operating temperatures, we are constantly concerned about not going beyond the shielding material melting temperature. If the use of cooling jets proves to be efficient, this may bring a significant progress in the technological field.

This paper presents a systematic experimental method of studying the heat transfer behavior of buoyancy-driven nanofluids. The presence of nanoparticles in buoyancy-driven flows affects the thermophysical properties of the fluid and consequently alters the rate of heat transfer. The focus of this paper is to estimate the range of volume fractions that results in maximum thermal enhancement and the impact of volume fraction on Nusselt number. The test cell for the nanofluid is a two-dimensional rectangular enclosure with differentially heated vertical walls and adiabatic horizontal walls filled with 27 nm Al2O3–H2O nanofluid. Simulations were performed to measure the transient and steady-state thermal response of nanofluid to imposed isothermal condition. The volume fraction is varied between 0% and 8%. It is observed that the trend of the temporal and spatial evolution of temperature profile for the nanofluid mimics that of the carrier fluid. Hence, the behaviors of both fluids are similar. Results shows that for small volume fraction, 0.2⩽ϕ⩽2% the presence of the nanoparticles does not impede the free convective heat transfer, rather it augments the rate of heat transfer. However, for large volume fraction ϕ>2%, the convective heat transfer coefficient declines due to reduction in the Rayleigh number caused by increase in kinematic viscosity. Also, an empirical correlation for Nuϕ as a function of ϕ and Ra has been developed, and it is observed that the nanoparticle enhances heat transfer rate even at a small volume fraction.

The flow and heat transfer in ribbed coolant passages of aspect ratios (AR) of 1:1, 4:1, and 1:4 are numerically studied through the solution of the Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. The ribs are oriented normal to the flow and arranged in a staggered configuration on the leading and trailing surfaces. The URANS procedure can resolve large-scale bulk unsteadiness, and utilizes a two equation k-ε model for the turbulent stresses. Both Coriolis and centrifugal buoyancy effects are included in the simulations. The computations are carried out for a fixed Reynolds number of 25000 and density ratio of 0.13 while the Rotation number has been varied between 0.12–0.50. The average duct heat transfer is the highest for the 4:1 AR case. For this case, the secondary flow structures consist of multiple roll cells that direct flow both to the trailing and leading surfaces. The 1:4 AR duct shows flow reversal along the leading surface at high rotation numbers with multiple rolls in the secondary flow structures near the leading wall. For this AR, the potential for conduction-limited heat transfer along the leading surface is identified. At high rotation number, both the 1:1 and 4:1 AR cases exhibit loss of axial periodicity over one inter-rib module. The friction factor reveals an increase with the rotation number for all aspect ratio ducts, and shows a sudden jump in its value at a critical rotation number because of either loss of spatial periodicity or the onset of backflow.

The flow and heat transfer characteristics of impinging laminar jets issuing from rectangular slots of different aspect ratios have been investigated numerically through the solution of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations in steady state. The three-dimensional simulation reveals the existence of pronounced streamwise velocity off-center peaks near the impingement plate. Furthermore, the effect of these off-center velocity peaks on the Nusselt number distribution is also investigated. Interesting three-dimensional flow structures are detected which cannot be predicted by two-dimensional simulations.

This paper demonstrates the advantages and prospects of transparent design of the heating surface for the simultaneous study of the hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of spray cooling. It was shown that the high-speed recording from the reverse side of such heater allows to identify individual droplets before their impact on the forming liquid film, which makes it possible to measure their sizes with high spatial resolution. In addition, such format enables one to estimate the number of droplets falling onto the impact surface and to study the features of the interface evolution during the droplets’ impacts. In particular, the experiments showed various possible scenarios for this interaction, such as the formation of small-scale capillary waves during impacts of small droplets, as well as the appearance of “craters” and splashing crowns in the case of large ones. Moreover, the unsteady temperature field during spray cooling in regimes without boiling was investigated using high-speed infrared thermography. Based on the obtained data, the intensity of heat transfer during spray cooling for various liquid flow rates and heat fluxes was analyzed. It was shown that, for the studied regimes, the heat transfer coefficient weakly depends on the heat flux density and is primarily determined by the flow rate. In addition, the comparison of the processes of spray cooling and nucleate boiling was made, and an analogy was shown in the mechanisms that determine their intensity of heat transfer.

Abstract Computational fluid dynamics represent a powerful tool to assess the performance of a combustor and identify possible issues/instabilities, helping thus e.g. to investigate the impact of advanced cycle modifications on the combustion in mGTs. The steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach is still mostly used in this framework. With growing computational power, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has gained more interest. LES provides higher details concerning flow structures and can better predict possible instabilities, specifically needed for advanced cycle modelling. On the other hand, LES remain rather challenging for real industrial applications. This work aims at providing an answer whether the advantages of LES justify the much higher computational costs. The objective of the present study is thus to assess the combustion performance and emissions of a typical small-scale 3.2 kWe micro gas turbine (mGT), using steady RANS and LES for various fuels. In this framework, a comparison of RANS and LES approaches (two levels of fidelity) is performed on a typical industrial case, to point out the strengths and weakness of each method with regard to industrial and research needs. The results show that both RANS (at a reduced cost) and LES can accurately predict the time-averaged trends of the main performance parameters, like temperature levels and emissions, also using various non-conventional inlet conditions. For the accurate prediction of the instabilities, the LES approach stands out as this approach takes into account the time-variation of the different quantities. Finally, a significant discrepancy has been observed between the CO levels provided by RANS and LES approaches where LES is overestimating the level of CO in the exhaust gases. Whereas it is difficult for LES to compete with convincing results provided by RANS, especially in the prediction of global emissions at reduced simulation cost, the LES strengths come out especially in flame and combustion stability analysis.

Solar air heater is a type of heat exchanger which transforms solar radiation into heat energy. The thermal performance of conventional solar air heater has been found to be poor because of the low convective heat transfer coefficient from the absorber plate to the air. Use of artificial roughness on a surface is an effective technique to enhance the rate of heat transfer. A CFD-based investigation of turbulent flow through a solar air heater roughened with square-sectioned transverse rib roughness has been performed. Three different values of rib-pitch (P) and rib-height (e) have been taken such that the relative roughness pitch (P/e=14.29) remains constant. The relative roughness height,e/D, varies from 0.021 to 0.06, and the Reynolds number, Re, varies from 3800 to 18,000. The results predicted by CFD show that the average heat transfer, average flow friction, and thermohydraulic performance parameter are strongly dependent on the relative roughness height. A maximum value of thermohydraulic performance parameter has been found to be 1.8 for the range of parameters investigated. Comparisons with previously published work have been performed and found to be in excellent agreement.

This study aims to investigate the thermal protective performance of fabrics used in firefighters' clothing under high-intensity fire exposure. The performance of thermal protective fabric systems with different physical properties was evaluated under laboratory simulated fire exposure. Additionally, the influence of the configuration of the fire exposure tests and modes of heat transfer through the fabrics was also thoroughly investigated. The protective performance was evaluated using the standard small-scale flame [International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9151:1995] and radiant heat (ISO 6942:2002) exposure tests. Additionally, the protective performance was evaluated under flash-fire exposure using a newly developed hexagon test. The protective performance values obtained from the small-scale (flame and radiant heat) and hexagon (flash fire) tests were compared and discussed. It has been found that a multi-layered fabric with high weight, thickness, and thermal resistance can significantly and positively affect the protective performance. If the air permeability of this fabric is high, it can show a lower protective performance; however, the impact of air permeability on the protective performance is insignificant especially in the case of the hexagon test. Notably, the protective performance can differ under two types of small-scale tests − flame and radiant heat. Also, this protective performance value is generally higher in the case of hexagon test in comparison with the small-scale tests. These differences in protective performance are mainly due to the unique configurations of these tests and/or different modes of heat transfer through the tested fabrics. The findings from this study will guide textile or materials engineers in the design and selection of materials for high performance thermal protective clothing; in turn, it will improve the occupational health and safety for firefighters.

One of the most widely studied parameters in turbine blade shaping is blade lean, i.e. the tangential displacement of spanwise sections. However, there is a lack of published research that investigates the effect of blade lean under non-uniform temperature conditions (commonly referred to as a ‘hot-streak’) that are present at the combustor exit. Of particular interest is the impact of such an inflow temperature profile on heat transfer when the NGV blades are shaped. In the present work a computational study has been carried out for a transonic turbine stage using an efficient unsteady Navier-Stokes solver (HYDRA). The configurations with a nominal vane and a compound leaned vane under uniform and hot-streak inlet conditions are analysed. After confirming the typical NGV loading and aero-loss redistributions as seen in previous literature on blade lean, the focus has been directed to the rotor aerothermal behavior. Whilst the overall stage efficiencies for the configurations are largely comparable, the results show strikingly different rotor heat transfer characteristics. For a uniform inlet, a leaned NGV has a detrimental effect on the rotor heat transfer. However, once the hot-streak is introduced, the trend is reversed; the leaned NGV leads to favourable heat transfer characteristics in general and for the rotor tip region in particular. The possible causal links for the observed aerothermal features are discussed. The present findings also highlight the significance of evaluating NGV shaping designs under properly conditioned inflow profiles, rather than extrapolating the wisdom derived from uniform inlet cases. The results also underline the importance of including rotor heat transfer and coolability during the NGV design process.

This paper provides a simplified analysis method to estimate the impact of building shape on energy efficiency of office buildings in Kuwait. The method is based on results obtained from a comprehensive whole building energy simulation analysis. The analysis takes into account several building shapes and forms including rectangular, L-shape, U-shape, and H-shape as well as building aspect ratios, window-to-wall-ratios, and glazing types. The simplified method is suitable for architects during preliminary design phase to assess the impact of shape on the energy efficiency of office buildings.
