The paper demonstrates the feasibility of the gel-clot method for the analysis of bacterial endotoxins in water extracts of ultrapure paraffin oil which is a water insoluble oily medical device. Because ultrapure paraffin oil is water insoluble oily liquid, the ultrapure paraffin oil (10 mL) was shaken with 10 mL water for 15 minutes at 2000 rpm, the endotoxin present was extracted to the aqueous phase without interference inhibition/enhancement of the product, the recovery of the endotoxin added to the ultrapure paraffin oil was determined. A validation study confirmed that endotoxins present in ultrapure paraffin oil which is water insoluble liquid medical device pass over into the aqueous phase at concentrations of 20, 10, and 5 EU/mL with recoveries of 94.2% to 111%. So the conclusion is that the gel-clot test is suitable for detecting bacterial endotoxins in ultrapure paraffin oil which is a water insoluble oily medical device.

Hydrogenophaga palleronii LHJ38 can grow on naphthalene as sole carbon and energy source. The growth and naphthalene degradation curve of the strain were determined in biphase and monophase system respectively. The growth and naphthalene degradation capacity of cells obtained from oil phase and aqueous phase were compared carefully. The maximum biomass of 4.248g/L was obtained after cultivating 72h under the optimum conditions of 30 mL paraffin oil and 2g naphthalene in 1L mineral salt medium. In the biphase system, the naphthalene degradation capacity of Hydrogenophaga palleronii LHJ38 was higher more than 2 times than that in the monophase system. The naphthalene (2g/L) can be degraded completely in 132h when the concentration of cell was 2 mg dry weight cell/mL. The naphthalene degradation rate of cells obtained from oil phase was 2.7 fold as fast as that of cells obtained from aqueous phase.

An improved 24-hour hydrophobic grid membrane filter HGMF method for coliform and Escherichia coli enumeration was developed. The new method, which uses a buffered MUG agar for the E. coli portion of the test, was subjected to a precollaborative validation study against the 3-tube MPN procedure encompassing 375 naturally contaminated and inoculated samples representing 25 food products. The HGMF/MUG method produced coliform and E. coli counts equivalent to the conventional method. The confirmation rate of MUG-positive colonies in this study was 98.1%.

Spherical fine powders of tungsten oxide were prepared by emulsion evaporation method. The characteristics of the powders prepared were examined by means of TGA, XRD, SEM and image analyzer. The emulsions were prepared by vigorous mixing of aqueous phase containing tungsten ion and the organic phase containing kerosene, surfactant and paraffin oil. Precursors were made by evaporating the emulsion in the kerosene bath at 160 °C and then calcined at 650 °C. The average particle size of the tungsten oxide powders was 0.6 ㎛ and their shapes were spherical. As the HLB value of the surfactant increased and the concentration of tungsten ions decreased, the mean particle size of tungsten oxide powders decreased whereas agglomeration size increased

It was shown in a paper communicated by us to the Royal Society in April, 1910— ( a ) That bacterial endotoxins have the power of inhibiting phagocytosis; that in some cases this action is general, but in most cases it is specific. ( b ) That the endotoxic substance is unaltered by prolonged exposure to high temperatures. ( c ) That, as far as our experiments then carried us, the inhibition of phagocytosis appeared to result from an interaction between endotoxin and serum.

5-Vinyloxazolidine-2-thione (VOT), a goitrogenic substance occurring in plants of the family Cruciferae, was found to catalyze the reduction of iodine by azide ion, the consumption of iodine being proportional to the amount of VOT. Based on these observations, a sensitive, titrimetric method of VOT determination was developed. The new method obviates the necessity of VOT extraction from the aqueous phase with organic solvents. Sensitivity and accuracy of titrimetric determination of VOT are comparable with those of spectrophotometric procedures.
