New product development selection is a complex decision-making process. To uphold their competence in competitive business environments, enterprises are required to continuously introduce novel products into markets. This paper presents a fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) for solving the product development selection problem. The fuzzy set theory is adopted to represent ambiguities and vagueness involved in each expert’s judgment. In the proposed model, the fuzzy Kano method and fuzzy DEMATEL are employed to filter criteria and establish interactions among the criteria, whereas the SAM is applied to aggregate experts’ opinions. Unlike the commonly used top-down relation-structuring approach, the proposed FANP first identifies the interdependence among the criteria and then the identified relationships are mapped to the clusters. This approach is more realistic, since the inner and outer relationships between criteria are simultaneously considered to establish the relationships among clusters. The proposed model is illustrated through a real life example, with a comparative analysis using modified TOPSIS and gray relation analysis in the synthesizing phase. The concluded results were approved by the case company. The proposed methodology not only is useful in the case study, but also can be generally applied in other similar decision situations.

Due to fast changing technologies, shortening product lifecycles, and increased global competition, companies today often need to develop new products continuously and faster. Successful introduction and acceleration of new product development (NPD) is important to obtain competitive advantage for companies. Since technology selection for NPD involves complex decision makings that are critical to the profitability and growth of a company, the selection of the most appropriate technology for a new product requires the use of a robust decision-making framework capable of evaluating several technology candidates based on multiple criteria. This paper presents an integrated model that adopts interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) to evaluate various different available technologies for NPD. The ISM is used to understand the interrelationships among the factors, and the FANP is to facilitate the evaluation process of decision makers under an uncertain environment with interrelated factors. A case study of a flat panel manufacturer is performed to examine the practicality of the proposed model. The results show that the model can be applied for group decision making on the available technology evaluation and selection in new product development.

This article aims to develop a novel model for ranking the parameters that influence the building of trust on online shopping in the context of Iran. A multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) model based on a fuzzy analytic network process (ANP) method is developed to systematically clarify the interdependent relationships among the evaluation criteria of trust and then, scientifically evaluate the feasible parameters and rank the priorities of the trust. The results of the proposed model reveal that under the characteristics of trustor (TR) sub-factors, the most important indicator which can affect the trust is propensity to trust. Furthermore, regarding the characteristics of trustee (TE) sub-factors, data quality with a priority of 0.064 is the most important indicator. Also, in the environmental factors (EN) sub-factors, promotions and advertising with a weight of 0.151 is the most significant indicator.

Technology evaluation has been increasingly important because of the pressing needs of new product introduction in a competitive global market. To select the most appropriate technology, a firm needs to have a robust technology evaluation framework to evaluate several technology candidates based on multiple criteria and evaluated by multiple experts. Thus, this paper presents an integrated model for evaluating various technologies for New Product Development (NPD). A network that takes into account the benefits, opportunities, costs, and risks (BOCR) aspects of different technologies is constructed first, and interpretive structural modeling (ISM) is applied next to determine the interrelationships among the factors. Finally, fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) is used to facilitate the evaluation process of decision makers under an uncertain environment with interrelated factors. The proposed model is applied in a flat panel manufacturer in selecting the most suitable panel technology.

New product development projects (NPDP) face different risks that may affect the scheduling. In this article, the purpose was to develop an optimization model to solve the RCPSP in NPDP and obtain a robust baseline for the project. The proposed model includes three stages: the identification of the project’s risks, an estimation of activities’ duration, and the resolution of an integer linear program. Two versions of the model were designed and compared in order to select the best one. The first version uses a method to estimate the activities’ duration based on the expected value of the impact of the risks and the second version uses a method based on the judgmental risk analysis process. Finally, the two version of the model were applied to a case study and the best version of the model was identified using a robustness indicator that analyses the start times of the baselines generated.

The literature on learning in new product development (NPD) documents the processes globally but is short on specifics. Knowledge levels are not clearly conceptualized, nor are there clear devices for documenting knowledge transfers in terms of knowledge levels. This paper presents the methods of a qualitative research approach for measuring knowledge transfer directly in terms of knowledge. The paper specifically addresses the commonly avoided dimension of knowledge, depth. The methods are derived from a real-life comparative case study exploring knowledge sharing in product development. Our focused interview approach has been refined to avoid unproductive digressions by the subjects and certain forms of bias, yet still obtain rich accounts of project events. Evidence of transfer obtained by the interviews is analysed in terms of three knowledge dimensions: scope, depth and action. Methods for aggregating and interpreting data are discussed and an operational flowchart for knowledge transfer coding is proposed.

Purpose: Important determinants of new product development success fall into five main areas encompassing strategic leadership, competitive intelligence, management of technology, specific characteristics of the company's innovation process, and the company's absorptive capacity to use available knowledge to produce and commercialize new products. Unfortunately the existing knowledge on each of these five areas is not being shared by researchers in the other areas, thus the models are focused on the particular research area. This study tests these constructs as a set of determinants of product innovation success. Design/methodology/approach: A field test using a mailed questionnaire to collect a relatively large sample of manufacturing companies has been used to test the proposed model. To eliminate possible multicollinearity among the independent variables, a multivariate regression analysis was used. Findings: The results provide clear evidence about the importance of competitive intelligence, strategic leadership, competitive intelligence, management of technology, specific characteristics of the company's innovation process, and company absorptive capacity with company success in new product development. Research limitation/implications: Despite the relatively broad scope of the proposed model, other factors may also be important and should be included in future studies. Practical implications: The items used for measuring the main constructs provide further and more specific insights into how managers should go about developing these areas within their organizations. Originality/value: While the study is grounded in the literature of what until now have been five separate areas of knowledge, it proposed a unique integrated model for these areas important to new product development.

WeBid is a prototype web-based framework developed for supporting and facilitating early supplier involvement in new product development on the Internet. It provides a suite of rigorous and yet pragmatic constructs for establishing and managing the customer-supplier relationships in new product development process. This paper reports on some insights and experience gained from a real-life case study using WeBid system and approach in the tendering process of developing a Video Conferencing System (VCS).

Due to the increasing advancement in technology and limited resources as well as environment being polluted at the same time, the natural solar energy, which has the advantage of environmental protection and being the newly developed approach, will become the rushing field of study around the world in order to implement energy efficiency and reduce carbon pollution. In the meantime, the solar industry technology and new product development have become the considerations to the survival and competitiveness of enterprises. In this study, literature review and expert interviews are utilized to obtain five major key dimensions and 19 subordinate criteria regarding new product development. The Interpretive Structural Model (ISM) is employed to obtain the dimension-dimension and criterion-criterion dependence relationship, and used the Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (Fuzzy ANP) to determine the top priority weight for assessment improvement in the new product development solutions of the enterprises.
