Hargreaves equation (HG), which lacks a wind speed (u2) term, was modified, through a linear regression calibration method, into LHGu which hasu2terms. LHGu is effectively a simplified method for approximating FAO-56 Penman-Monteith equation (FPM) daily reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in tropics with only temperature data. In LHGu, the “0.0023” constant term in HG was calibrated as a shifted power function ofu2, and the calibration constant was parametrized as a quadratic function ofu2. LHGu was developed using simulated constantu2data and historical temperature data for four sites in West Africa: Abidjan, Accra, Daloa, and Lome. LHGu matched FPMETobetter than HG over a wide range ofu2: for Accra, foru2range 0.5–6.0 m/s, the modified coefficient of efficiency,E1, varied narrowly (0.83–0.98) for LHGu but widely (0.14–0.95) for HG optimized foru2=2.0 m/s; the corresponding MBE ranges were −0.05–0.01 mm/d for LHGu and 0.02–0.63 mm/d for HG which cannot respond to varying dailyu2. LHGu is useful for quickly computing practically accurate estimates of FPMETofor varying dailyu2where only temperature data are available.

This study was performed to update and generate prediction equations for converting digestible energy (DE) to metabolizable energy (ME) for Korean Hanwoo beef cattle, taking into consideration the gender (male and female) and body weights (BW above and below 350 kg) of the animals. The data consisted of 141 measurements from respiratory chambers with a wide range of diets and energy intake levels. A simple linear regression of the overall unadjusted data suggested a strong relationship between the DE and ME (Mcal/kg DM): ME = 0.8722 × DE + 0.0016 (coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.946, root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.107, p < 0.001 for intercept and slope). Mixed-model regression analyses to adjust for the effects of the experiment from which the data were obtained similarly showed a strong linear relationship between the DE and ME (Mcal/kg of DM): ME = 0.9215 × DE − 0.1434 (R2 = 0.999, RMSE = 0.004, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope). The DE was strongly related to the ME for both genders: ME = 0.8621 × DE + 0.0808 (R2 = 0.9600, RMSE = 0.083, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope) and ME = 0.7785 × DE + 0.1546 (R2 = 0.971, RMSE = 0.070, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope) for male and female Hanwoo cattle, respectively. By BW, the simple linear regression similarly showed a strong relationship between the DE and ME for Hanwoo above and below 350 kg BW: ME = 0.9833 × DE − 0.2760 (R2 = 0.991, RMSE = 0.055, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope) and ME = 0.72975 × DE + 0.38744 (R2 = 0.913, RMSE = 0.100, p < 0.001 for the intercept and slope), respectively. A multiple regression using the DE and dietary factors as independent variables did not improve the accuracy of the ME prediction (ME = 1.149 × DE − 0.045 × crude protein + 0.011 × neutral detergent fibre − 0.027 × acid detergent fibre + 0.683).

AbstractAs a result of heterogeneity nature of soils and variation in its hydraulic conductivity over several orders of magnitude for various soil types from fine-grained to coarse-grained soils, predictive methods to estimate hydraulic conductivity of soils from properties considered more easily obtainable have now been given an appropriate consideration. This study evaluates the performance of artificial neural network (ANN) being one of the popular computational intelligence techniques in predicting hydraulic conductivity of wide range of soil types and compared with the traditional multiple linear regression (MLR). ANN and MLR models were developed using six input variables. Results revealed that only three input variables were statistically significant in MLR model development. Performance evaluations of the developed models using determination coefficient and mean square error show that the prediction capability of ANN is far better than MLR. In addition, comparative study with available existing models shows that the developed ANN and MLR in this study performed relatively better.

Metallic (M) and polymer (P) materials as layered hybrid metal-polymer-metal (MPM) sandwiches offer a wide range of applications by combining the advantages of both material classes. The interfaces between the materials have a considerable impact on the resulting mechanical properties of the composite and its structural performance. Besides the fact that the experimental methods to determine the properties of the single constituents are well established, the characterization of interface failure behavior between dissimilar materials is very challenging. In this study, a mixed numerical–experimental approach for the determination of the mode I energy release rate is investigated. Using the example of an interface between a steel (St) and a thermoplastic polyolefin (PP/PE), the process of specimen development, experimental parameter determination, and numerical calibration is presented. A modified design of the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) is utilized to characterize the interlaminar properties and a tailored experimental setup is presented. For this, an inverse calibration method is used by employing numerical studies using cohesive elements and the explicit solver of LS-DYNA based on the force-displacement and crack propagation results.

As one of the important parameters for the production process of industry, agriculture and military, temperature can affect the production efficiency, energy efficiency and people’s living standards. The temperature measurement has been widely noted and studied. Firstly, the software can receive the temperature of measuring point, and store the value in the database. Secondly, when the temperature exceeds the specified range, the software will give an alarm. The software can view the historical temperature data and draw the curve of temperature. Finally, the software can query and modify the information of the measuring point, such as number, name, normal temperature range of equipment, etc. Based on the existing research results, this paper describes the design and implement of wireless temperature measurement software for electrical equipment.

The pressure—viscosity coefficient is an indispensable property in the elastohydrodynamic (EHD) lubrication of hard contacts, but often not known. A guess will easily lead to enormous errors in the film thickness. This article describes a method to deduct this coefficient by adapting the value of the pressure—viscosity coefficient until the differences between accurate film thickness approxi-mation values and accurate film thickness measurements over a wide range of values are at a minimum. Eleven film thickness approximation formulas are compared in describing the film thickness of a test fluid with known value of the pressure—viscosity coefficient. The measurement method is based on spacer layer interferometry. It is concluded that for circular contacts the newer more versatile expressions are not better than some older approximations, which are limited to a smaller region of conditions, and that the older fits are as least as appropriate to find the pressure—viscosity coefficient of fluids, in spite of the limited data where they have been based on.

Aims and MethodTo review the evidence for this use of pramipexole in the treatment of unipolar and bipolar depression, a literature search on Embase and Medline was conducted in December 2003. The search was updated in July 2004. The reference sections of retrieved papers were searched for further relevant references.ResultsThere are limited data on the clinical use of pramipexole in affective disorders. Only two double-blind trials in bipolar depression and one in unipolar depression were retrieved. Most information is in the form of case reports and open studies. No dose-response relationships have been established and a wide range of doses has been employed in the reports.Clinical ImplicationsIn view of the fact that the evidence for the use of pramipexole is still limited at the time of writing, its routine clinical use cannot be recommended. The data appear promising, but further research is required to determine its role in affective disorders.

A recent study into prescreening techniques to identify bones suitable for radiocarbon dating from sites known for poor or variable preservation (Brock et al. 2007, 2010a) found that the percent nitrogen (%N) content of whole bone powder was the most reliable indicator of collagen preservation. Measurement of %N is rapid, requires little preparation or material, and is relatively cheap. The technique reduces the risk of needlessly sampling valuable archaeological objects, as well as saving time and money on their unsuccessful pretreatment prior to dating. This method of prescreening is now regularly used at the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU). In the original study, linear regression analysis of data from 100 bones from 12 Holocene sites across southern England showed that when 0.76% N was chosen as a threshold, 84% of bones were successfully identified as containing sufficient (i.e. >1%) or insufficient (i.e. <1%) collagen for dating. However, it has been observed that for older, Pleistocene bones the failure rate may be higher, possibly due to the presence of more degraded, short-chain proteins that pass through the ultrafilters used in pretreatment, resulting in lower yields. Here, we present linear regression analysis of data from nearly 600 human and animal bones, antlers, and teeth, from a wide range of contexts and ages, to determine whether the 0.76% threshold identified in the previous study is still applicable. The potential of carbon:nitrogen atomic weight ratios (C:N) of whole bone to predict collagen preservation is also discussed.

Surface temperature significantly affects the asphalt layers modulus and entire pavement structure response to vehicles traffic loading. Because of the rheological properties of bitumen binders, the asphalt performs similarly to temperature-susceptible visco-elastic materials. The historical temperature data of local regions is necessary to design sustainable pavement structures. Likewise, the layers’ material mechanical properties determined at specific temperatures is essential for proper design too. This paper presents an analysis of pavement surface temperature classification results. Data analysis covers temperature data from the Road Weather Information Stations from the past ten years. An analysis of various temperature profile forecast methods is presented, followed by a review of recent research on the impact of temperature and cause of failure. Particular emphasis is laid on sorting the qualitative temperature data. The complete linkage clustering method had been used for establishing the most similar pairs for classification. Accordingly, the territory of Lithuania was divided into three main regions with different pavement temperature distributions for each temperature interval. Temperature classification along these lines enables pavement responses to be estimated over the pavement design life.

Abstract. In September 2017, we conducted a proton-transfer-reaction mass-spectrometry (PTR-MS) intercomparison campaign at the CESAR observatory, a rural site in the central Netherlands near the village of Cabauw. Nine research groups deployed a total of 11 instruments covering a wide range of instrument types and performance. We applied a new calibration method based on fast injection of a gas standard through a sample loop. This approach allows calibrations on timescales of seconds, and within a few minutes an automated sequence can be run allowing one to retrieve diagnostic parameters that indicate the performance status. We developed a method to retrieve the mass-dependent transmission from the fast calibrations, which is an essential characteristic of PTR-MS instruments, limiting the potential to calculate concentrations based on counting statistics and simple reaction kinetics in the reactor/drift tube. Our measurements show that PTR-MS instruments follow the simple reaction kinetics if operated in the standard range for pressures and temperature of the reaction chamber (i.e. 1–4 mbar, 30–120∘, respectively), as well as a reduced field strength E∕N in the range of 100–160 Td. If artefacts can be ruled out, it becomes possible to quantify the signals of uncalibrated organics with accuracies better than ±30 %. The simple reaction kinetics approach produces less accurate results at E∕N levels below 100 Td, because significant fractions of primary ions form water hydronium clusters. Deprotonation through reactive collisions of protonated organics with water molecules needs to be considered when the collision energy is a substantial fraction of the exoergicity of the proton transfer reaction and/or if protonated organics undergo many collisions with water molecules.

Objectives: To provide an overview of recent techniques and technologies for the application of topical corticosteroid therapy immediately following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Methods: A comprehensive search in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases was conducted to identify publications between January 2000 and December 2019 detailing clinical trials that have evaluated the efficacy and safety of intraoperative applications of topical corticosteroids for CRS. Results: A total of 21 articles, all of which highlight a variety of corticosteroid-infused products, including Propel corticosteroid-eluting stents, NasoPore, Merocel, SinuBand, calcium alginate, and bioresorbable gel-type products, are included for review. Propel stents are the only devices that have achieved level 1A evidence in terms of efficacy and have data to support their safety. The remaining products have shown mixed results in terms of efficacy and safety. Conclusion: A wide range of techniques and technologies have been introduced to enhance the topical delivery of corticosteroids into the neosinuses after ESS for CRS. Regarding efficacy, there is level 1A evidence to support the use of Propel stents. Most of the remaining strategies show some degree of efficacy. Direct comparisons across the different strategies are limited owing to the varied uses of delivery vectors, corticosteroid choices, and doses of corticosteroids. Propel stents and SinuBand have sufficient data to support systemic and ocular safety, whereas the remaining products have limited data to support their safety.
