Background.The prognostic significance of COX2 for survival of patients with oral cancer remains controversial. Thus, the meta-analysis was performed in order to identify COX2 expression impact on prognosis of oral cancer.Method.Relevant literatures were searched using the following electronic databases without any language restrictions: Web of Science, the Cochrane Library Database, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and CBM. Version 12.0 STATA software (Stata Corporation, College Station, Texas, USA) was used for the current meta-analysis. Odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) with their corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were also calculated to clarify the correlation between COX2 expression and prognosis of oral cancer.Results.Final analysis of 979 oral cancer patients from 12 clinical cohort studies was performed. The meta-analysis results show that COX2 expression in cancer tissues was significantly higher than those in normal and benign tissues (allP< 0.05). Combined HR of COX2 suggests that positive COX2 expression has a shorter overall survival (OS) than those of negative COX2 expression (P< 0.05).Conclusion.The meta-analysis study shows that elevated COX2 expression may be associated with the pathogenesis of oral cancer and with a worse prognosis in oral cancer patients.

Previous studies on the prognostic impact of survivin expression in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer have yielded inconsistent results. This study was initiated to assess the relationship between survivin expression and overall survival (OS) or disease free survival (DFS) in GI cancer patients. We applied system literature searches on EMBASE, PubMed, Web of science, and the Cochrane library to conduct this up-to-date meta-analysis. Thirty studies with totally 3622 GI cancer patients were collected. The prevalence of high survivin expression in GI cancer was 0.57 (95% CI: 0.51-0.63). High survivin expression was significantly associated with shorter OS (HR 1.57, 95% CI: 1.42-1.74) and DFS (HR 1.38, 95% CI: 1.21-1.58). Subgroup analysis also showed significant association between high survivin expression and poorer OS or DFS in gastric cancer or colorectal cancer. In summary, our study indicated that high survivin expression was related to poor prognosis in GI cancer. Well-designed studies with large sample and more convincing data are needed to confirm our conclusion.

Background: Evaluation of the feasibility for osteopontin (OPN) to serve as a biomarker in the prognosis and clinical-pathological features of prostate cancer patients. Methods: The original publications related to osteopontin and prostate cancer were comprehensively searched in the online databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Medline, Wanfang and China National Knowledge Infrastructure up to August 2019. Results were analyzed by Revman 5.3 and Stata 12.0. Results: A total of 21 studies were included in the analysis and the result showed that the positive OPN expression group had a lower overall survival than the negative expression group (univariate: HR=2.32, 95%CI [1.74, 3.10], multivariate: HR=2.41, 95%CI [1.63, 3.57]) and a lower biochemical relapse-free survival than the negative group (univariate: HR=1.42, 95%CI [0.92, 2.17], multivariate: HR=1.61, 95%CI [1.39, 1.87]). In addition, there was a higher expression level of OPN in prostate cancer tissues than in normal prostate tissues (OR=46.55, 95%CI [12.85, 168.59], P&lt;0.00001) and benign prostatic hyperplasia tissues (OR=11.07, 95%CI [3.43, 35.75], P&lt;0.0001). Moreover, OPN positive expression was also related to high Gleason score (OR=2.64, 95%CI [1.49, 4.70], P=0.0009), high TNM stage (OR=3.15, 95%CI [1.60, 6.20, P=0.0009), high Whitmore-Jewett stage (OR=2.53, 95%CI [1.06, 6.03], P=0.04), high lymph node (OR=3.69, 95%CI [1.88, 7.23], P=0.0001), and distant metastasis (OR=8.10, 95%CI [2.94, 22.35], P=0.01). There was no difference observed in the differentiation of prostate cancer (OR=1.79, 95%CI [0.39, 8.33], P=0.46). Conclusion: Osteopontin could be recognized as a promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for prostate cancer patients.

Abstract Background Controversial findings have been reported in the impact of speckle-type POZ protein (SPOP) on clinicopathological features and prognosis in diverse cancers. We conducted this meta-analysis to confirm whether SPOP was an effective biomarker to predict clinical stage, cancer differentiation and survival. Methods We searched studies published before June 2021 through Medline, Embase, the Cochrane library register of controlled trials and Wanfang databases. The corrections of SPOP expression with expression disparity, tumor differentiation, clinical stage and survival were analyzed. Results Our meta-analysis found that higher expression of SPOP was significantly associated with earlier clinical stage, well differentiation and better overall survival. Subgroup analysis showed that the SPOP expression of adjacent tissue was significantly higher than that in cancer tissues of prostate and liver. However, renal cancer presented improved expression of SPOP in cancer tissue. Conclusions SPOP has the potential function to act as a novel and effective biomarker for cancer diagnosis and prognostic stratification.

Objectives: Many studies have examined the prognostic significance of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in oral cancer; however, the results are contradictory. We, therefore, conducted a meta-analysis aiming to clarify the prognostic value of the NLR in oral cancer patients. Methods: A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases. Stata version 12.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: A total of 14 studies with 3216 patients were finally included. The results indicated that a high NLR was significantly associated with worse DFS (n=10, HR = 1.73, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.44–2.07, P<0.001). Similar results were observed for overall survival (OS) (n=9, HR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.39–1.86, P<0.001). Moreover, a high NLR was also correlated with lymph node metastasis (n=7, odds ratio [OR] = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.32–1.98, P<0.001), advanced tumor stage (n=7, OR = 2.63, 95% CI = 2.12–3.25, P<0.001), T stage (n=6, OR = 3.22, 95% CI = 2.59–4.01, P<0.001), tumor differentiation (n=5, OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.03–2.11, P=0.033), and perineural invasion (n=4, OR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.4–2.39, P<0.001). However, an elevated NLR was not correlated with gender. Conclusion: This meta-analysis showed that the NLR might be a potential independent prognostic factor in patients with oral cancer.

Aim: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the impact of oral health on quality of life in oral cancer patients (OCPs). Methods: PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched for publications on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in OCP and the information was extracted according to the PRISMA guidelines. A random effect model was used to obtain the pooled standard mean differences of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-14 questionnaire responses in meta-analysis. Results: total of 12 research papers were analyzed and revealed poor OHRQoL in OCPs (standard mean difference: 2.53; 95% CI: 1.55–3.50; p < 0.00001) compared with healthy individuals due to the effects of oncotherapy. Moreover, OHRQoL deteriorated with combinations of different treatment modalities. Conclusion: Oral health and oncotherapy can affect the quality of life in OCPs.

Antibiotics (ABs) are common medications used for treating infections. In cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), concomitant exposure to ABs may impair the efficacy of ICIs and lead to a poorer outcome compared to AB non-users. We report here the results of a meta-analysis evaluating the effects of ABs on the outcome of patients with solid tumours treated with ICIs. PubMed, the Cochrane Library and Embase were searched from inception until September 2019 for observational or prospective studies reporting the prognoses of adult patients with cancer treated with ICIs and with or without ABs. Overall survival (OS) was the primary endpoint, and progression-free survival (PFS) was the secondary endpoint. The effect size was reported as hazard ratios (HRs) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) and an HR > 1 associated with a worse outcome in ABs users compared to AB non-users. Fifteen publications were retrieved for a total of 2363 patients. In the main analysis (n = 15 studies reporting data), OS was reduced in patients exposed to ABs before or during treatment with ICIs (HR = 2.07, 95%CI 1.51–2.84; p < 0.01). Similarly, PFS was inferior in AB users in n = 13 studies with data available (HR = 1.53, 95%CI 1.22–1.93; p < 0.01). In cancer patients treated with ICIs, AB use significantly reduced OS and PFS. Short duration/course of ABs may be considered in clinical situations in which they are strictly needed.

Background/Aims: Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) is a heme-containing enzyme catalyzing the initial and rate-limiting steps in the kynurenine pathway, which converts tryptophan into kynurenine. Upregulation of IDO1 decreases tryptophan levels and increases the accumulation of kynurenine and its metabolites. These metabolites can affect the proliferation of T cells. Increasing evidence has shown that IDO1 is highly expressed in various cancer types and associated with poor prognosis of cancer patients. However, the results were inconsistent. Methods: We searched the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase and Cochrane library databases to identify studies evaluating the prognostic value of IDO1 in cancer patients. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by using fixed-effects/random-effects models. Results: This systematic review and meta-analysis included 2706 patients from 24 articles. The results indicated a shorter overall survival in patients with high expression of IDO1 (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.03, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.56-2.63). Furthermore, disease-free survival was worse in patients with high expression of IDO1 (HR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.46-4.20). Additionally, the pooled odds ratios (ORs) showed that increased IDO1 was significantly associated with tumor differentiation (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.05-3.12), distant metastasis (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.02-2.06), and poor clinical stage (OR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.13-3.17). However, no significant correlation was observed of increased IDO1 expression with age, sex, lymph node metastasis, and tumor size. Conclusion: High expression of IDO1 is associated with poor clinical outcomes. IDO1 could serve as a biomarker of prognosis and a potential predictive factor of clinicopathology in various cancers. Further studies should be performed to verify the clinical utility of IDO1 in human solid tumors.

Abstract Background: Esophageal carcinoma (EC) is the seventh-most prevalent tumor in the world, which is still one of the primary causes of tumor-related death. Identifying noteworthy biomarkers for EC is particularly significant in guiding effective treatment. Recently, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in peripheral blood (PB) were intensively discussed as prognostic markers in patients with EC. However, an ongoing controversy still exists regarding the prognostic significance of CTCs determined by the CellSearch system in EC sufferers. This meta-analysis was designed to approach this topic. Methods: We systematically conducted searches using PubMed, Medline, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies, which were published through February 20, 2020. Using the random-effects model, our study was performed in Review Manager software, with odds ratios (ORs), risk ratios (RRs), hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) as the effect values. Results: Totally 7 articles were finally included in this study. For clinicopathological characteristics, the pooled results on TNM stage indicated that the III/IV group had higher rate of CTCs compared with the I/II group (OR=1.36, 95% CI: 0.68-2.71, I2=0%). Incidence of CTCs was higher in patients with T3/T4 stage (OR=2.92, 95% CI: 1.31-6.51, I2=0%) and distant metastasis group (OR=5.18, 95% CI: 2.38-11.25, I2=0%) compared to patients with T1/T2 stage or non-metastatic group. The pooled analysis revealed that CTC positivity detected in EC patients was correlated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR=2.83, 95% CI:1.99-4.03, I2=0%) and relapse-free survival (RFS) (HR=4.71, 95% CI:2.73-8.13, I2=0%). When pooling the estimated RR, a poor therapeutic response to chemoradiotherapy was discovered in patients with CTC positivity (RR=1.99, 95% CI:1.73-2.29, I2=60%). Conclusions: In summary, our meta-analysis demonstrated that CTCs positivity determined by the CellSearch system are correlated with the prognosis of EC patients and might indicate a poor therapeutic response to chemotherapy in EC patients.

ABSTRACT Objective Understanding the individual and collective behavior of individuals about their oral health conditions is important to prevent and control of dental caries. This study aimed to seek evidence of the relationship between social capital and caries experience. Methods Using a systematic review with meta-analysis, we searched articles in PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, LILACS, IBECS, BBO, SCIELO, The Cochrane Library and MEDLINE databases. Studies with humans, of all ages and languages, published until July 2019, which related social capital to the caries experience, were included in this review. Results We identified 1163 articles evaluated considering inclusion and exclusion criteria, leaving 5 articles selected to compose the study sample, and only 3 included in the meta-analysis. In the final analysis p value was significant (p <0.001), showing that both social cohesion and neighborhood empowerment are associated with the caries experience. In the random model, the individual has 2.39 chances of not having the caries disease. The results reinforce the importance of community social capital in the caries experience of individuals. Conclusions The high level of community social capital is directly related to lower caries experience rates.
