The problem of robust fault-tolerant tracking control is investigated. Simulation on the longitudinal model of a flexible air-breathing hypersonic vehicle (FAHV) with actuator faults and uncertainties is conducted. In order to guarantee that the velocity and altitude track their desired commands in finite time with the partial loss of actuator effectiveness, an adaptive fault-tolerant control strategy is presented based on practical finite-time sliding mode method. The adaptive update laws are used to estimate the upper bound of uncertainties and the minimum value of actuator efficiency factor. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed control strategy is effective in rejecting uncertainties even in the presence of actuator faults.

In this paper, related researches and analyses are conducted for the tracking problem of the hypersonic vehicle subject to external disturbances, actuator faults, and input saturation. Firstly, to achieve automatic adjustment of control gains and deal with the impact of dynamic failures of system without requiring prior knowledge of the fault, a new modified fast nonsingular terminal sliding manifold is proposed, and a fast adaptive finite time fault-tolerant controller is provided combining the adaptive control method and terminal sliding mode. Then, a fast adaptive finite time anti-saturation fault-tolerant controller is presented to further solve the problem of input saturation, under which both of the velocity and altitude can track respective reference signal with the actuator input constraint. Finally, the closed-loop stability under the proposed two adaptive fault-tolerant control schemes is analyzed, and numerical simulations of longitudinal model of the hypersonic vehicle are demonstrated to further confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract In this paper, sliding mode control is used to develop two passive fault tolerant controllers for an AscTec Pelican UAV quadrotor. In the first approach, a regular sliding mode controller (SMC) augmented with an integrator uses the robustness property of variable structure control to tolerate partial actuator faults. The second approach is a cascaded sliding mode controller with an inner and outer SMC loops. In this configuration, faults are tolerated in the fast inner loop controlling the velocity system. Tuning the controllers to find the optimal values of the sliding mode controller gains is made using the ecological systems algorithm (ESA), a biologically inspired stochastic search algorithm based on the natural equilibrium of animal species. The controllers are tested using SIMULINK in the presence of two different types of actuator faults, partial loss of motor power affecting all the motors at once, and partial loss of motor speed. Results of the quadrotor following a continuous path demonstrated the effectiveness of the controllers, which are able to tolerate a significant number of actuator faults despite the lack of hardware redundancy in the quadrotor system. Tuning the controller using a faulty system improves further its ability to afford more severe faults. Simulation results show that passive schemes reserve their important role in fault tolerant control and are complementary to active techniques

Abstract This paper proposes a new extended stateobserver-based sliding mode control strategy with prescribed finite-time convergence. Firstly, a novel prescribed finite-time extended state observer is designed, which estimates the disturbance accurately within a prescribed finite time and effectively solves peaking value problem. Secondly, a new type of second-order prescribed finite-time sliding mode controller is designed to ensure system states converge within a prescribed finite time. Then, the proposed control strategy is applied to the design of partial integrated guidance and control with two-loop controller structure. Finally, the validity of the proposed methodology is verified through numerical simulation.

In this paper, a finite-time control strategy based on back-stepping method combining with a terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) and a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) is proposed for the longitudinal dynamic model of hypersonic vehicle (HV). Firstly, the model of HV is transformed into two strict feedback subsystem: the mismatched subsystem of altitude and the matched subsystem of velocity. Then, the TSMC and back-stepping method is incorporated to cope with the unmatched issue in the HV altitude subsystem. In addition, a NDO based on a finite-time-convergent differentiator (FD) is proposed to estimate the lumped disturbances. The finite-time stability condition of the system is established via the Lyapunov theory. Finally, the robustness and effectiveness of the method are verified by simulations.

This paper proposes an adaptive fault-tolerant control strategy for a hybrid vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to simultaneously compensate actuator faults and model uncertainties. With the proposed adaptive control schemes, both actuator faults and model uncertainties can be accommodated without the knowledge of fault information and uncertainty bounds. The proposed control scheme is constructed with two separate control modules. The low-level control allocation module is used to distribute the virtual control signals among the available redundant actuators. The high-level control module is constructed with an adaptive sliding mode controller, which is employed to maintain the overall system tracking performance in both faulty and uncertain conditions. In the case of actuator faults and model uncertainties, the adaptive scheme will be triggered to generate more virtual control signals to compensate the virtual control error and maintain the desired system tracking performance. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is validated through comparative simulation tests under different faulty and uncertain scenarios.

In this paper, a Nonsingular Terminal Sliding Mode Control (NTSMC) strategy is investigated to address the finite-time attitude tracking problem of a rigid spacecraft. Hybrid thruster and flywheel actuator system is used for rapid reorientation under external disturbance. The reference torque is obtained from time-optimal attitude trajectory, and it is exerted on the satellite by thrusters in the form of feedforward compensation. Owing to thruster output torque deviation, initial measurement error and external disturbances, the practical trajectory of a satellite would deviate from reference trajectory. In order for the satellite to track the reference trajectory in finite time, the correction torque is deduced based on the error between reference trajectory and real-time measurements, and then applied through flywheels in the form of feedback compensation. The NTSMC method is used to solve nonsingular problem and to improve the control precision of the satellite attitude tracking issue. The numerical simulation results show that this control strategy is effective and it has great robustness.

In order to overcome disturbances such as the instability of internal parameters or the actuator fault, the time-varying proportional-integral sliding-mode surface is defined for coordinated control of the excitation generator and the steam valve of waste heat power generation units, and a controller based on sliding-mode function is designed which makes the system stable for a limited time and gives it good performance. Based on this, a corresponding fault estimation law is designed for specific faults of systems, and a sliding-mode fault-tolerant controller is constructed based on the fixed-time control theory so that the systems can still operate stably when an actuator fault occurs and have acceptable performance. The simulation results show that the tracking error asymptotically tends to be zero, and the fixed-time sliding-mode fault-tolerant controller can obviously improve the dynamic performance of the system.
