A sequence is a -alternating sequence if any odd term is less than or equal to the next even term and the any even term is greater than or equal to the next odd term , where is a nonnegative constant. In this paper, we present an optimal on-line procedure to select a -alternating subsequence from a symmetric distributed random sample. We also give the optimal selection rate when the sample size goes to infinity.

A sequence of objects with independent, identically distributed qualities is presented to a selector who must choose two on-line, i.e. without anticipation or recall. The selector's aim is to obtain a satisfactory pair as quickly as possible. Two versions of the problem are considered, and optimal selection rules are derived and compared. An investigation is also made of a heuristic rule suitable for a selector who has no prior knowledge of the nature of the object sequence.

This paper is devoted to the investigation of limit theorems for extremes with random sample size under general dependence-independence conditions for samples and random sample size indexes. Limit theorems of weak convergence type are obtained as well as functional limit theorems for extremal processes with random sample size indexes.

South African television ratings are obtained from the AMPS meter panel. This panel must be viewed as a complex non random sample. For such samples the effective sample size differs from the actual sample size. It has been found that, when equal weights are assigned to strata, the most reliable estimate for effective sample size can be obtained by considering every household as a sample cluster. This estimate of effective sample size can be incorporated directly into a test for significant rating change. For convenience this test is implemented graphically.
