Harmony search (HS) algorithm is an emerging population-based metaheuristic algorithm, which is inspired by the music improvisation process. The HS method has been developed rapidly and applied widely during the past decade. In this paper, an improved global harmony search algorithm, named harmony search based on teaching-learning (HSTL), is presented for high dimension complex optimization problems. In HSTL algorithm, four strategies (harmony memory consideration, teaching-learning strategy, local pitch adjusting, and random mutation) are employed to maintain the proper balance between convergence and population diversity, and dynamic strategy is adopted to change the parameters. The proposed HSTL algorithm is investigated and compared with three other state-of-the-art HS optimization algorithms. Furthermore, to demonstrate the robustness and convergence, the success rate and convergence analysis is also studied. The experimental results of 31 complex benchmark functions demonstrate that the HSTL method has strong convergence and robustness and has better balance capacity of space exploration and local exploitation on high dimension complex optimization problems.

To enhance the performance of harmony search (HS) algorithm on solving the discrete optimization problems, this paper proposes a novel harmony search algorithm based on teaching-learning (HSTL) strategies to solve 0-1 knapsack problems. In the HSTL algorithm, firstly, a method is presented to adjust dimension dynamically for selected harmony vector in optimization procedure. In addition, four strategies (harmony memory consideration, teaching-learning strategy, local pitch adjusting, and random mutation) are employed to improve the performance of HS algorithm. Another improvement in HSTL method is that the dynamic strategies are adopted to change the parameters, which maintains the proper balance effectively between global exploration power and local exploitation power. Finally, simulation experiments with 13 knapsack problems show that the HSTL algorithm can be an efficient alternative for solving 0-1 knapsack problems.

Harmony search (HS) algorithm is a new population based algorithm, which imitates the phenomenon of musical improvisation process. Its own potential and shortage, one shortage is that it easily trapped into local optima. In this paper, a hybrid harmony search algorithm (HHS) is proposed based on the conception of swarm intelligence. HHS employed a local search method to replace the pitch adjusting operation, and designed an elitist preservation strategy to modify the selection operation. Experiment results demonstrated that the proposed method performs much better than the HS and its improved algorithms (IHS, GHS and NGHS).

Harmony search (HS) method is an emerging metaheuristic optimization algorithm. In this paper, an improved harmony search method based on differential mutation operator (IHSDE) is proposed to deal with the optimization problems. Since the population diversity plays an important role in the behavior of evolution algorithm, the aim of this paper is to calculate the expected population mean and variance of IHSDE from theoretical viewpoint. Numerical results, compared with the HSDE, NGHS, show that the IHSDE method has good convergence property over a test-suite of well-known benchmark functions.

This paper presents a modified harmony search (MHS) algorithm for solving numerical optimization problems. MHS employs a novel self-learning strategy for generating new solution vectors that enhances accuracy and convergence rate of harmony search (HS) algorithm. In the proposed MHS algorithm, the harmony memory consideration rate (HMCR) is dynamically adapted to the changing of objective function value in the current harmony memory. The other two key parameters PAR and bw adjust dynamically with generation number. Based on a large number of experiments, MHS has demonstrated stronger convergence and stability than original harmony search (HS) algorithm and its two improved algorithms (IHS and GHS).

In the past three decades nature-inspired and meta-heuristic algorithms have dominated the literature in the broad areas of search and optimization. Harmony search algorithm (HSA) is a music-inspired population-based meta-heuristic search and optimization algorithm. The concept behind the algorithm is to find a perfect state of harmony determined by aesthetic estimation. This paper starts with an overview of the harmonic phenomenon in music and music improvisation used by musicians and how it is applied to the optimization problem. The concept of harmony memory and its mathematical implementation are introduced. A review of HSA and its variants is presented. Guidelines from the literature on the choice of parameters used in HSA for effective solution of optimization problems are summarized.

The transient search algorithm (TSO) is a new physics-based metaheuristic algorithm that simulates the transient behavior of switching circuits, such as inductors and capacitors, but the algorithm suffers from slow convergence and has a poor ability to circumvent local optima when solving high-dimensional complex problems. To address these drawbacks, an improved transient search algorithm (ITSO) is proposed. Three strategies are introduced to the TSO. First, a chaotic opposition learning strategy is used to generate high-quality initial populations; second, an adaptive inertia weighting strategy is used to improve the exploration ability, exploitation ability, and convergence speed; finally, a neighborhood dimensional learning strategy is used to maintain population diversity with each iteration of merit seeking. The Friedman test and Wilcoxon’s rank sum test were also used by comparing the experiments with recently popular algorithms on 18 benchmark test functions of various types. Statistical results, nonparametric sign tests, and convergence curves all indicate that ITSO develops, explores, and converges significantly better than other popular algorithms, and is a promising intelligent optimization algorithm for applications.

Slime mould algorithm (SMA) is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the phenomenon of slime mould oscillation. The SMA is competitive compared to other algorithms but still suffers from the disadvantages of unbalanced exploitation and exploration and is easy to fall into local optima. To address these shortcomings, an improved variant of SMA named MSMA is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a chaotic opposition-based learning strategy is used to enhance population diversity. Secondly, two adaptive parameter control strategies are proposed to balance exploitation and exploration. Finally, a spiral search strategy is used to help SMA get rid of local optimum. The superiority of MSMA is verified in 13 multidimensional test functions and 10 fixed-dimensional test functions. In addition, two engineering optimization problems are used to verify the potential of MSMA to solve real-world optimization problems. The simulation results show that the proposed MSMA outperforms other comparative algorithms in terms of convergence accuracy, convergence speed, and stability.

In this paper, a hybridization of Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA) with a greedy shuffle move is proposed for Nurse Rostering Problem (NRP). NRP is a combinatorial optimization problem that is tackled by assigning a set of nurses with different skills and contracts to different types of shifts, over a pre-determined scheduling period. HSA is a population-based method which mimics the improvisation process that has been successfully applied for a wide range of optimization problems. The performance of HSA is enhanced by hybridizing it with a greedy shuffle move. The proposed method is evaluated using a dataset defined in first International Nurse Rostering Competition (INRC2010). The hybrid HSA obtained the best results of the comparative methods in four datasets.

Numerous optimization problems designed in different branches of science and the real world must be solved using appropriate techniques. Population-based optimization algorithms are some of the most important and practical techniques for solving optimization problems. In this paper, a new optimization algorithm called the Cat and Mouse-Based Optimizer (CMBO) is presented that mimics the natural behavior between cats and mice. In the proposed CMBO, the movement of cats towards mice as well as the escape of mice towards havens is simulated. Mathematical modeling and formulation of the proposed CMBO for implementation on optimization problems are presented. The performance of the CMBO is evaluated on a standard set of objective functions of three different types including unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, and fixed-dimensional multimodal. The results of optimization of objective functions show that the proposed CMBO has a good ability to solve various optimization problems. Moreover, the optimization results obtained from the CMBO are compared with the performance of nine other well-known algorithms including Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA), Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA), and Teamwork Optimization Algorithm (TOA). The performance analysis of the proposed CMBO against the compared algorithms shows that CMBO is much more competitive than other algorithms by providing more suitable quasi-optimal solutions that are closer to the global optimal.
