The Yunnan pine shoot beetle,Tomicus yunnanensisKirkendall and Faccoli (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) is an important pest of Yunnan pine (Pinus yunnanensisFranch) in China. Experiments with host log baits were done to develop a pest monitoring system using host tree kairomone. Five Yunnan pine logs (each 10–15 cm diam. × 30-cm long) in a trap-log bundle were treated by peeling periderm (outer bark) off to expose the phloem, and half of each log was covered with sticky adhesive to capture any attracted adult beetles. Significantly, more beetles were attracted and caught on the periderm-peeled logs (ca 30 beetles/m2log surface/day) than on untreated control logs with adhesive (ca 2.5/m2/day). No significant differences were observed between catches on logs taken from lower or upper halves of Yunnan pines.T. yunnanensisflies mostly during the afternoon according to trap catches throughout the day. Attraction to the periderm-peeled logs decreased considerably when they were peeled further to remove the phloem, indicating phloem volatiles play a role in selection of the host by the beetle. The readily-available log baits appear useful for monitoring pine shoot beetle populations in integrated pest management programs.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is one of the largest fine arts collections worldwide, comprising the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Austrian Theater Museum, the Museum of Ethnology, all placed in Vienna, and Schlo&szlig; Ambras in Tirol. We present results from up to 10 years of insect pest monitoring in different collections and the implementation of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) concept. The Kunsthistorisches Museum was the first museum in Vienna to introduce such a concept. We also present specific insect pest problems such as a biscuit beetle (<em>Stegobium paniceum</em>) infestation of paintings lined with starch paste backings (linings) or the webbing clothes moth (<em>Tineola bisselliella</em>) infestation at the Museum of Carriages, both repeatedly occurring problems in the museum. With the help of the insect pest monitoring programs, these and other problems were found and the infested objects treated, usually with anoxia (nitrogen).

A mail survey was conducted in 2000 to determine awareness and use of integrated pest management (IPM) practices by nurseries in Pennsylvania. Survey participants were randomly selected from the Pennsylvania Dept. of Agriculture, Bureau of Plant Industry, list of certified nurseries. Participants answered questions pertaining to awareness of common practices, frequency that IPM practices were employed, and specifics on monitoring and pest management decision-making processes. Responses were analyzed by Cluster Analysis (SPSS Inc., Chicago), which resulted in the formation of three distinct segments. The segments were labeled “IPM Savvy” (nursery managers who were more likely to employ IPM practices); “Part-time IPMers” (nursery managers who employed some IPM strategies and were interested in future adoption of IPM practices); and “Reluctant IPMers” (nursery managers who were least likely to employ IPM strategies). The “Part-time IPMers” and “Reluctant IPMers” segments represent a substantial part of the industry (51%), who continues to have concerns about the cost, efficacy, and implementation of IPM practices into their businesses. Overall, Pennsylvania growers are aware of IPM practices; however, maintaining permanent records of pests identified and pest management strategies employed remain low. Continued education is warranted to enhance pest monitoring skills and recordkeeping along with demonstrable evidence to the cost effectiveness and marketing benefits that the implementation of IPM practices offer the nursery operators.

Hazelnut crops are damaged by various types of polyphagous true bugs. The most commonly encountered species are representatives of the families Coreidae and Pentatomidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) Recent invasion of the exotic brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) represents a serious threat in many agroecosystems in Europe. Following its first detection, H. halys has become a key pest in many hazelnut crops in Europe, causing damage throughout the entire period of nut and kernel development. The pest causes damage in adults and larval stages by sucking sap from practically all parts of plants. This bug is characterized by a distinct polyphagous behavior, so to date, more than 300 plant species have been identified as food hosts. Halyomorpha halys was first registered in Serbia in October 2015 in the region of Vršac. Detection of brown marmorated bug in hazelnut crops in Serbia calls for caution and requires systematic monitoring of this pest in order to determine an adequate strategy for plant protection and accurate timing of its control. In hazelnut crops, this bug causes damage by sucking juices from the husk, shell and kernel of the fruit, which significantly reduces the quality and market value of the hazelnut fruit. Management of the brown marmorated stink bug in agricultural settings has primarily relied on the use of broad-spectrum of insecticides. In the system of Integrated Pest Management, the control of H. halys is based on a strategy that implies a reduced and effective use of insecticides and a distinct knowledge of the biology and behavior of the pest. Monitoring insect populations is a fundamental component of Integrated Pest Management programs. In a perspective of reduction or avoidance of chemical treatments and preservation of a healthy agroecosystems, such as the, alternative pest management strategies in hazelnut orchards should be further developed. Moreover, as a long-term solution, biological control of H. halys with the natural enemy species, native or introduced, could play a major role in managing this pest, especially in organic farming systems.

The carrot weevil, Listronotus oregonensis (Le Conte), is an important pest of carrot and celery in eastern Canada (Stevenson 1985). In Quebec, it is univoltine and overwinters as adults (Boivin 1985). At present, the only way to control this pest is with chemical insecticides applied either as granules at seeding time to control the larvae or as foliar sprays to control the adults before they start to oviposit. If integrated pest management (IPM) programs are to be applied to crops attacked by the carrot weevil, additional control methods are needed.

As part of a continual search for potential pathogens of insects for use in biological control or on an integrated pest management program, two bacilliform virus-like particles (VLP) of similar morphology have been found in the Mexican bean beetle Epilachna varivestis Mulsant and the house cricket, Acheta domesticus (L. ).Tissues of diseased larvae and adults of E. varivestis and all developmental stages of A. domesticus were fixed according to procedures previously described. While the bean beetles displayed no external symptoms, the diseased crickets displayed a twitching and shaking of the metathoracic legs and a lowered rate of activity.Examinations of larvae and adult Mexican bean beetles collected in the field in 1976 and 1977 in Maryland and field collected specimens brought into the lab in the fall and reared through several generations revealed that specimens from each collection contained vesicles in the cytoplasm of the midgut filled with hundreds of these VLP's which were enveloped and measured approximately 16-25 nm x 55-110 nm, the shorter VLP's generally having the greater width (Fig. 1).
