This study evaluated the antioxidant activity as well as bioflavonoid content of the methanol and ethanol-water extracts of the fresh and dried leaves ofTetracarpidium conophorum. Antioxidant activity was determined by spectrophotometric methods using DPPH free radical, nitric oxide radical inhibition and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays. In addition, total phenolics, flavonoids and proanthocyanidin content were also determined. The ethanol: water extract of the dried leaves had the highest antioxidant activity with a 50% inhibition of DPPH at a concentration of 0.017 mg/mL compared to the standards, Vitamin C and Vitamin E with inhibition of 0.019 and 0.011 mg/mL, respectively. This extract also showed nitric oxide radical inhibition activity comparable to that of rutin, 54.45% and 55.03% for extract and rutin, respectively, at 0.1 mg/mL. Ferric reducing power was also comparable to that of ascorbic acid (281 and 287 μM Fe (11)/g, resp.) at a concentration of 1 mg/mL. The methanol extract of both the dried and the fresh leaves had higher phenolic, flavonoids and proanthocyanidin content than the ethanol : water extract. The study reveals thatT. conophorumcan be an interesting source of antioxidants with their potential use in different fields namely food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Tricholoma anatolicum H.H. Doğan & Intini is known as the most prized mushroom species in Feke region of Turkey. This mushroom species is collected from Cedar (Cedrus libani) forests and therefore is named as Cedar mushroom in this region. It is collected and consumed by local collectors and also exported to Far East countries such as Japan by exporting companies. Therefore, it is important to investigate the nutritional and medical importance of this species. The aim of this study is to reveal the antioxidant activity of methanol extract in different concentrations (1, 2 and 4 mg/mL) of T. anatolicum H.H. Doğan & Intini collected from Feke district of Adana province of Turkey in 2015. In this study, it was determined that total phenolic content of this mushroom was 56 mg/kg. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO) and reducing power (RP) activities given in trolox (µM) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) given in FeSO4 (µM) were found as 449, 180, 337 and 2 at the highest concentration (4 mg/mL), respectively. As a result, it could be suggested that methanol extract of T. anatolicum H.H. Doğan & Intini has significantly antioxidant activity.

Antioxidant compounds play a significant role in preventing and scavenging free-radicals by reducing oxidative stress and providing protection to humans against degenerative diseases and infections. Obviously, antioxidant molecules of plant origin are pivotal to combat the oxidative harm in cells. Present work intended to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the fruits of Spondias pinnata. Methanol extracts of the fruits at two stages of maturity were prepared and investigated by various antioxidants analyses such as total antioxidant activity, reducing power and radical scavenging assays (DPPH, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide). Its total phenol, flavonoid and tannin contents were also determined. Spondias pinnata fruit extracts exhibited effective antioxidant activity and its IC50 values of the unripe fruits were 65, 66, 72.23, 83.25, 66.75 ?g/ml and ripe fruits were 124.24, 92.50, 97.66, 144.10, 72.25 ?g/ml, for total antioxidant activity, reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging, nitric oxide radical scavenging and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays respectively. The extracts, especially unripe fruit extract had good amounts of total phenolic and flavonoid contents which might contribute the antioxidant activities considerably. It is evident from the study that the fruits of S. pinnata possessed potent antioxidant activity and it can be considered as a good dietary choice among the underutilized fruits as well as common fruits. Therefore, wild mango may be a good choice of antioxidants of plant origin for dietary and pharmaceutical uses.

ABSTRAK Daya reduksi merupakan salah satu indikator potensi aktivitas suatu senyawa sebagai antioksidan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan daya reduksi ekstrak etanol biji Aquilaria microcarpa, Aquilaria malaccensis, dan Aquilaria beccariana terhadap Ion Ferri (Fe3+). Serbuk kering biji A. microcarpa, A. malaccensis, dan A. beccariana dimaserasi menggunakan etanol 70%. Daya reduksi ditentukan dengan metode FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) yang didasarkan atas kemampuan senyawa dalam mereduksi senyawa besi(III)-tripiridil-triazin menjadi besi(II)-tripiridil triazin pada pH 3,6. Absorbansi diukur menggunakan spektrofotometer UV-Vis pada panjang gelombang 598 nm. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ekstrak etanol biji A. microcarpa, A. malaccensis, dan A. beccariana mempunyai daya reduksi berturut-turut sebesar 6,39±1,58; 119,95±28,04; dan 62,12±6,57 µM ekivalen troloks/g ekstrak. This study aims to determine the reduction power of the ethanol extract of the seeds of Aquilaria microcarpa, Aquilaria malaccensis, and Aquilaria beccariana against Ferric ion (Fe3+). Dry powder of A. microcarpa, A. malaccensis, and A. beccariana seeds was macerated using 70% ethanol. Reducing power determined using FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) that is based on the ability of the compounds in reducing iron compounds (III) -tripiridil-triazine to iron (II) -tripiridil triazine at pH 3.6. The absorbance was measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 598 nm. The results showed ethanol extract of seeds of A. microcarpa, A. malaccensis, and A. beccariana have reducing power of 6.39 ± 1.58; 119.95 ± 28.04; and 62.12 ± 6.57 µM troloks equivalents / g extract respectively. Currently, the use of agro-industrial waste represents a viable alternative for obtaining valuable compounds that, in the case of biorefineries, is an opportunity for improvement. In this context, the aim of our study was to determine the flavonoid content and the antioxidant capacity of 30 byproducts from fruit processing in Colombia and propose possible applications. We analyzed the antioxidant capacity of the ethanolic extracts from each byproduct using the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and the reducing power of antioxidant activity (RPAA) assays, as well as the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) test. We found that tree tomato peels and stem and peach peels had a high flavonoid content, with values greater than 8,271.82 ± 702.70 μg quercetin per gram of dry sample. We also found that mango (22,676.57 ± 759.71 μg TE1/g Sdb, 3,692.38 ± 92.67 μg GAE/g Sdb), soursop (22,117.13 ± 754.94 μg TE1/g Sdb, 4,858.79 ± 156.71 μg GAE/g Sdb, 14,713.39 ± 757.95 μg TE2/g Sdb), grape (17,027.85 ± 765.11 μg TE1/g Sdb, 13,395.15 ± 659.31 μg TE2/g Sdb), peach peels (17,910.21 ± 1,424.33 μg TE2/g Sdb) and seeds (4,316.46 ± 112.00 μg GAE/g Sdb, 20,093.32 ± 1,317.93 μg TE2/g Sdb), and grape stalk (3,552.26 ± 31.63 μg GAE/g Sdb) showed a high antioxidant capacity in the different tests performed. Our results demonstrate that fruit byproducts have potential use in the pharmaceutical,  ood, and cosmetic industry due to  heir flavonoids content and their high antioxidant capacity.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are dangerous sources of macromolecular damage. While most derive from mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, their production can be triggered by exogenous stresses, surpassing the extinction capacity of intrinsic antioxidant defense systems of cells. Here, we report the antioxidant activity of FucoPol, a fucose-rich polyanionic polysaccharide produced by Enterobacter A47, containing ca. 17 wt% of negatively charged residues in its structure. Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays coupled to Hill binding kinetics fitting have shown FucoPol can neutralize ferricyanide and Fe3+-TPTZ species at an EC50 of 896 and 602 µg/mL, respectively, with positive binding cooperativity (2.52 ≤ H ≤ 4.85). This reducing power is greater than most polysaccharides reported. Moreover, an optimal 0.25% w/v FucoPol concentration shown previously to be cryo- and photoprotective was also demonstrated to protect Vero cells against H2O2-induced acute exposure not only by attenuating metabolic viability decay, but also by accentuating post-stress proliferation capacity, whilst preserving cell morphology. These results on antioxidant activity provide evidence for the biopolymer’s ability to prevent positive feedback cascades of the radical-producing Fenton reaction. Ultimately, FucoPol provides a biotechnological alternative for implementation in cryopreservation, food supplementation, and photoprotective sunscreen formula design, as all fields benefit from an antioxidant functionality.

The aim of the study was to obtain a dye from black elder fruits and flowers and to study their potential in production of jellies with high antioxidant activity. Three dyes were produced by lyophilization of aqueous extracts: (1) fruits dye (F), (2) flowers dye (FL), and (3) fruits and flowers dye (F + FL). Their polyphenol profiles were compared by means of ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). The antioxidant activity [ferric reducing/antioxidant power assay (FRAP) and DPPH radicals scavenging test and total phenolics were compared by spectrophotometric methods. Jellies were produced from agar and gelatin with the addition of three obtained dyes, and their antioxidant water- and lipid soluble fractions were tested with a Photochem device. Results indicated that black elder fruits are rich in anthocyanins, especially cyanidin-3-O-sambubioside (7.56 mg/g d.w.), while flowers are rich in polyphenols, especially chlorogenic acid (2.82 mg/g d.w.) and rutin (4.04 mg/g d.w.). FL dye exhibited higher antioxidant activity compared to F dye (for about 30–40%), regardless of the used method, whereas F + FL dye was characterized by intermediate antioxidant activity. Jellies produced with the addition of FL dye had better antioxidant properties but unattractive color and unpleasant taste, but the use of F + FL dye created a product of favorable organoleptic properties and antioxidant activity comparable to jellies with F dye addition.

Antioxidant potential of the 80% methanol extract of the leaves of Opuntia dillenii was evaluated using 1, 1-diphenyl, 2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide radical scavenging, reducing power, total phenol and total flavonoid content determination assays. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the extract was also carried out, which revealed that the extract possesses flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids and tannins. The extract showed significant antioxidant activities in all antioxidant assays compared to the reference antioxidant in a dose dependent manner. In DPPH radical scavenging activity, the IC50 value of the crude extract was found to be 15.71μg/mL while the IC50 value for the reference ascorbic acid was 10.84 μg/mL. Again, the extract showed remarkable nitric oxide scavenging potential and good reducing power. Moreover, the methanol extract was found to contain high amount of phenols and flavonoids, expressed as gallic acid and rutin equivalents respectively. Based on the findings of the present study, we conclude that the methanol extract of the leaves of O. dillenii possesses remarkable antioxidant potential which may be attributed to the high amount of phenols and flavonoids present in the extract. Abstract All parts of the sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) plant are considered to contain large amounts of compounds that are believed to have beneficial health effects. Till now, different parts of sea buckthorn plant have been used for the treatment of diseases in traditional medicine in various countries. Nevertheless, sea buckthorn parts would be a good raw material not only for medicinal properties but also for food products with functional properties; therefore, the aim of the research was to determine the concentration of different phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in various sea buckthorn parts. The study was conducted on parts of female and male sea buckthorn bushes. Phenolic compounds (total phenols, total flavonoids and condensed tannins) and antioxidative activity (ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) free radical scavenging activity (using 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH)) in ethanolic extracts of leaves, shoots, flowers, and berries were determined using various spectrophotometric methods. The study showed that concentration of phenolic compounds differed among parts of sea buckthorn plant and among gender. Leaves of female plants proved to be the most valuable, as they contained the highest total phenol concentration (165.76 mg/g) and antioxidant activity (220.97 mg/g for FRAP and 43.76 mg/g for DPPH), while lowest values were found in young shoots of male plants (84.94 mg/g, 94.24 mg/g and 24.63 mg/g, respectively). The significant differences in chemical composition and biological activity of sea buckthorn leaves, shoots, berries, and buds indicate a need for detailed studies of their extracts, specific fractions and compounds during a whole vegetative season.

Interaction between dietary flavonoids and albumins plays an important role in the bioavailability and bioactivity of flavonoids. Therefore, the influence of this interaction on the antioxidant activity of flavonoid has attracted much interest. In this study, a ceric reducing/antioxidant capacity assay (CRAC) was employed to investigate the effects of albumin-flavonoid interaction on the antioxidant activity of seven common flavonoids. The results obtained from the CRAC assay were also compared separately with the results from the spectrophotometric methods including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. All the flavonoids show a decreasing in the antioxidant activity detected by CRAC assay, indicting a “masking effect” of bovine serum albumin (BSA)-flavonoid interaction. However, the results from DPPH and FRAP assays were conflicting, which may be attributed to the influence of solvent systems.

Objective: The current study was to evaluate and compare the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activity of bark, flowers and leaves of the tree Simarouba glauca. Methods: The solvent extraction of phytochemicals was carried out using Soxhlet apparatus with ethanol, chloroform, methanol, and water. The antioxidant property was determined by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydrogen peroxide free radical scavenging, reducing power assay, and nitric oxide radical scavenging assay using gallic acid and ascorbic acid as the standards. Results: The extraction yield was found maximum in the water extract of flower (3.7% w/w). Qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytoconstituents showed that the highest amount of alkaloids and flavonoid content (2.1% w/w) and (3.9% w/w), respectively, was in the chloroform extract of the flower. Phenol and carbohydrate constituent was found to be highest in the methanol extract of leaves 2.5% w/w and 2.2% w/w, respectively. The antioxidant assays showed that the bark possessed maximum antioxidant activity. The water extracts of S. glauca bark exhibited scavenging property (90%) with an IC50 value 39.63 μg/ml, and the least activity (56%) was observed in the methanol extracts of leaves with an IC50 value of 62.96 μg/ml of S. glauca. Conclusion: The study concluded that the water extract of the bark is a potent antioxidant compared to leaves and flowers. Further, in vivo studies are essential to enumerate its medicinal use and prove its efficacy in therapeutic applications.
