A new ligand (2-methyl-5-nitro-1-imidazomethyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione (L) and its Ag(I),Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were synthesized. The authenticity of the ligand and its transition metal complexes were established by elemental analyses, conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements, as well as spectroscopic (IR,1H NMR, electronic, mass and ESR) and thermal studies. The IR spectral studies revealed the existence thiol-thione tautamerism in the ligand molecule. The magnetic and electronic spectral studies suggest an octahedral geometry for Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes. The ligand acts as a bidentate coordinating through the N-3 nitrogen and the exocyclic sulfur atoms of oxadiazole rings. Antimicrobial screening of the ligand and its metal complexes were determined against the bacteriaEscherichia coliandSalmonella paratyphiA.

Complexes of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) were synthesized from Schiff base 2-{[(2-aminophenyl)imino]methyl}phenol and metformin. The authenticity of the transition metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements, as well as spectroscopic (IR, electronic) and thermal studies. IR spectral studies revealed the existence of the ligands in the amine form in the solid state. The magnetic and electronic spectral studies suggest an octahedral geometry for all the complexes. The metformin acts as a bidentate ligand and Schiff base ofo-phynelendiamine and salicylaldehyde acts as a tridentate ligand. Antimicrobial screening of the Schiff base, metformin and transition metal complexes were determined against the bacteriaEscherichia coliandBacillus megaterium.

A new ligand 5-[6-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)pyridin-2-yl]-1,3,4-oxadiazole- 2-thiol (L) and its Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) complexes were synthesized. The authenticity of the ligand and its transition metal complexes were established by elemental analyses, conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements, as well as spectroscopic (IR, 1H- and 13C-NMR, electronic, mass, ESR) and thermal studies. The IR and 1H-NMR spectral studies revealed the existence of the ligand in the thiol form in the solid state, whereas in the thione form in the dissolved state. The magnetic and electronic spectral studies suggest an octahedral geometry for all the complexes. The ligand acts as a tridentate ligand coordinating through the pyridine nitrogen and the nitrogen atoms (N-3' and N-3'') of the two oxadiazole rings. Antimicrobial screening of the ligand and its metal complexes were determined against the bacteria Escherichia coli and Bacillus cirroflagellosus, as well as against the fungi, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. .

A new macroacyclic amide ligand N,N?-bis(2-benzothiazolyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide (BPD), formed by the condensation of 2,6-pyridinedicarbonyldichloride with 2-aminobenzothiazole and its Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes were synthesized. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of elemental analyses, conductance measurements, magnetic moments, spectral (IR, NMR UV-Visible, EPR and FAB) and thermal studies. The complexes exhibit an octahedral geometry around the metal center. Conductance data of the complexes suggested them to be 1:1 electrolytes. The pentadentate behavior of the ligand was proposed on the basis of spectral studies. The X-band EPR spectra of the Cu(II) and Mn(II) complexes in the polycrystalline state at room (300 K) and liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) were recorded and their salient features are reported.

The solid complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) with Schiff base ligands derived from heterocyclic compounds 3-acetyl-6-methyl-(2H)-pyran-2,4(3H)-dione (Dehydroacetic acid) ando-chloroaniline were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductance, magnetic, thermal, UV-Vis and1H-NMR spectroscopy. The ligand field parameters have been evaluated for Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) complexes which suggest an octahedral geometry for each of them. The magnetic moment and spectral data suggest the dimeric nature of Mn(II) complexes with octahedral geometry. The fungicidal activities of the ligands and their metal complexes have been screened in vitro againstAspergillus nigerand the percentage inhibition of the metal complexes is found to be increased considerably then that of their corresponding ligands and the order is Cu>Ni>Fe>Mn>Co.

Manganese(II) and cobalt(II) complexes were synthesized with [N4] tetradentate macrocyclic ligand using different metal salts i.e. MnCl2, Mn(NO3)2, CoCl2 and Co(NCS)2. The ligand was prepared by condensation of glyoxal and carbahydrazide. All these were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance measurements, magnetic moment, IR, mass, electronic and EPR spectral studies. Elemental analysis indicates that the complexes have composition MLX2 where (X = Cl–, NO3 –,NCS–). All the complexes were found to be non-electrolytic in nature so can be formulated as [MLX2]. Infrared spectra of metal complexes suggest that the ligand behaves as tetradentate. On the basis of magnetic moment, electronic and EPR spectral data, all the metal complexes were found to be high spin with octahedral geometry.

A new series of 10-membered tellurium containing tetraazamacrocyclic complexes, [ML1Cl2], [ML2Cl2] and [ML3Cl2], where [M=Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II); L1, L2and L3=10-membered tellurium containing tetraazamacrocyclic ligands] have been prepared via the template condensation of ethylenediamine and diaryltellurium dichlorides, R2TeCl2, (R=p-hydroxyphenyl, 3-methyl-4-hydroxyphenyl,p-methoxyphenyl) in the presence of metal chlorides. These complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, conductivity measurements, infrared, electronic absorption and proton magnetic resonance spectral studies. IR and PMR spectra confirm the formation of 10-membered tetraazamacrocycle skeleton and their tetradentate nature. An octahedral geometry has been assigned to all the metal complexes on the basis of various physicochemical studies.

Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes having the general composition [M(L)2X2] (where L = 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde thiosemicarbazone, M = Mn(II) and Co(II), X = Cl- and - NO3 ) were synthesized. All the metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, mass, IR, EPR, electronic spectral studies and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). Based on the spectral studies, an octahedral geometry was assigned for all the complexes. Thermal studies of the compounds suggest that the complexes are more stable than the free ligand. This fact was supported by the kinetic parameters calculated using the Horowitz-Metzger (H-M) and Coats-Redfern (C-R) equations. The antibacterial properties of the ligand and its metal complexes were also examined and it was observed that the complexes are more potent bactericides than the free ligand.
