ABSTRACTClays have been synthesized and several types of molecules have been intercalated into them to enhance their ionic conductivity. The clay has the molecular formula of Litaeniolite, Li(Mg2Li)Si4O10F2, and the inserted molecules include PEO and two varieties of sulfone, tetramethylene sulfone and ethylmethyl sulfone. These have been made in the interest of electrolytes in lithium secondary batteries in order to produce a truly solid state cell. The products have been thoroughly characterized by x-ray diffraction to verify the uptake of the molecules into the layers, thermal analysis to observe the stabilization of the intercalated molecules, along with impedance measurements to test their conductivity.

AbstractBenzimidazolium trichlorocuprate(II) undergoes a redox reaction in the solid state at elevated temperature (∼240°C) to produce the cyclic trimer of benzimidazole and cuprous chloride. The trimer has been characterized by IR, NMR, and Mass spectroscopy. It has also been synthesized in lower yield by heating the mixtures of CuCl2 and benzimidazole in different ratios or heating other compounds of CuCl2 and benzimidazole. The absorption, emission, and excitation spectra of the trimer in two different solvents (TFA and DMSO) and a comparison of these results with those of benzimidazole are presented here.

This paper investigates the clamp load loss in threaded fittings with a collapsible metal gasket for elevated temperature application. Firstly, the joint is tested at room temperature to find the correlation between the joint clamp load, the tightening torque, and the angle of turn. Secondly, a mathematical model for clamp load loss of the bolted joints under temperature cycling is proposed for predicting the clamp load variation. Although the bolt and the joint would normally undergo linear elastic deformation at room temperature, they are more likely to exhibit nonlinear behavior at high temperature due to the reduced material strength. The plastic or creep deformation of the bolt, gasket, and joint would cause permanent clamp load loss that may lead to joint leakage, part separation, or plastic thread deformation that would significantly increase the cost of fitting replacement and/or maintenance. A non-linear finite element model is used with temperature dependent material properties. The FEA model is used to investigate the clamp load loss of the threaded fittings due to plastic and creep behavior. Some measures for enhancing the threaded fitting reliability at elevated temperature are proposed.
