AbstractFollowing the 1997 financial crisis, Korea underwent a dramatic overhaul of its corporate governance framework. Drastic changes in its legal and regulatory infrastructure led to more transparent and accountable companies. Boards of directors, shareholders, stakeholders, and auditors began to function effectively and even a corporate control market emerged. Many forms of internal and external corporate governance and market-oriented discipline were established. Korean companies are poised to make a quantum leap to reach the most competitive international levels of corporate governance. This paper argues that Korea must continue its reform efforts. It first discusses the Asian financial crisis and the first stage of reforms that followed. It then explores the areas where Korea needs to undergo the next stage of reforms. It will argue that only then can Korean corporations receive proper valuations. Korean companies have indeed come a long way but lingering perceptions of weak corporate governance thwart them from becoming world-class competitors.

Over the last several years the long-awaited revolution in direct-digital readout systems has begun, with the introduction of efficient slow-scan CCD cameras. Earlier, the introduction of video cameras to electron microscopes had brought a quantum leap in the speed and efficiency of carrying out a host of operations. The high sensitivity of the video cameras provided the ability to see the image in much more detail and at a lower beam intensity than had been previously possible by viewing the fluorescent screen. The ability to assess, on line, characteristics such as specimen quality and image focus, even qualitatively, gave feedback to the operator that previously took hours to obtain. Due to the low resolution of these video systems, however, they were rarely useful for data recording.

AbstractThis article evaluates the improvement in gas turbine combined cycle power plant efficiency and output via pressure gain combustion (PGC). Ideal and real cycle calculations are provided for a rigorous assessment of PGC variants (e.g., detonation and deflagration) in a realistic power plant framework with advanced heavy-duty industrial gas turbines. It is shown that PGC is the single-most potent knob available to the designers for a quantum leap in combined cycle performance.

Though the technologies are dynamically developing and there are a lot of research projects, there is still no general opinion on a glass-facade building among the European scientific community, architects and construction engineers. The increasing requirements to heat-protective qualities of translucent structures make us think of the necessity of a quantum leap both in technologies and in principal approaches to the development of architectural and constructive solutions of translucent shells. Together with economical features, the dynamics of heat-protective indicators’ increase show the tendencies to reaching the possibilities limits of mass glass units. The European construction practice usually solve this problem by developing sealed insulating glass units and by different conceptual solutions of the systems of translucent double facades. In the given article the basic theoretical principles and innovative engineering ideas are formulated dealing with the modern glass-facade building construction. “Green Building” conception is analyzed as a European new building philosophy.
