The development of bis(diimine)copper(i) complexes as dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells is described. We assess the progress made in terms of light-harvesting and overall photoconversion efficiencies, and highlight areas that remain ripe for development and improvement, and the advantages of copper dyes over conventional ruthenium dyes.

Dye-sensitized solar cells are attracted much interest in the fields of clean energy. In this work, a novel ruthenium terpyridine dimeric complex (N749 dimer) was designed and synthesized through the coordination of 4,4',4"-tricarboxy-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine with ruthenium trichloride, bridging with 4,4'-bipyridine and basic hydrolysis. The calculated and experimental UV-vis absorption spectrums for N749 dimer were compared to those of the commercial black dye N749. The results showed that N749 dimer exhibits wider spectrum absorption range and higher molar extinction coefficient. Dye sensitized solar cells were fabricated based on the N749 dimer. The cell efficiency could reach 2.9% battery efficiency under simulated sunlight irradiation of 100 mW/cm2 power AM1.5G ruthenium. The results provide a new direction for designing the ruthenium dyes.

The mixture of ZnO and NiO effect on solar cell has been investigated. ZnO and NiO particles were produced by hydrothermal method and the produced particles were annealed at 500°C for 1 hour. Crystal structure and morphological properties of particles were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). XRD measurements showed that ZnO particles have a hexagonal wurtzite structure and NiO particles have a cubic structure. SEM results show that both ZnO and NiO particles are the form of nanoparticles. Dye-sensitized solar cells were fabricated by N-719 (Ruthenium) dyes and mixing ZnO/NiO particles in different ratios, 100/0, 50/50, and 0/100. It was observed that the solar cells made with ZnO have the highest performance with the efficiency of 0.542%. In addition, it was observed that when amount of NiO ratio increases in the mixture of ZnO/NiO, the efficiencies of DSSCs were observed to decrease.
