Due to the interesting properties of polymerized ionic liquids (PILs), studies are carried out to evaluate its performance when in composite with other synthetic polymers. Research on blend films prepared through solution casting are typically done to investigate their properties, however, electrospun fibers are of particular interest especially on technologies requiring mechanically robust and high surface area functional materials. In this work, poly (vinylidene fluoride)/poly (ionic liquid) (PVdF/PIL) nanofibers were produced through electrospinning. The PIL, poly (1-hexyl-3-vinyl imidazolium bromide), was synthesized through sonochemical solventless reaction followed by free radical polymerization. The structures of the synthesized IL and PIL were confirmed using FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Pseudocapacitor prototypes consisting of electrodeposited ZnO-based electrodes and the electrospun PVdF/PIL nanofibers as the polymer electrolyte were then fabricated at varied PIL concentrations. Contact angle measurements using sessile drop method revealed the decreasing wettability of the fibers attributed to the inherent hydrophobic nature of both the PVdF and PIL. Scanning electron micrographs also showed that increasing fiber diameters were obtained as the PIL concentration increases. In addition, cyclic voltammetry results showed that the calculated areal capacitance also increases with increasing PIL concentration. The development of pseudocapacitor assemblies utilizing ZnO-based electrodes and electrospun polymer electrolyte-separator membranes presents a better promise for the next-generation energy storage devices.

ABSTRACTDeposition of solution-processed functional materials generally requires additional post-processing to optimize the functionality of the material. We study sintering of Ag nanoparticle (NP) (with average diameter 77nm) deposits for improved electrical conductivity, with emphasis on Argon plasma methods compatible with the low temperature requirements of regular low-cost flexible polymer substrates. The relationship between plasma parameters (such as power and treatment time) versus sintering results (sintered structure depth, film continuity and electrical sheet resistance) will be reported. According to our efforts so far, we have achieved the electrical resistivity of the sintered film at about 20 times greater than the value of bulk silver using a process compatible with the low temperature requirements of common flexible polymer substrates.

Ionic liquids are an important component for constructing functional materials, and polyxometalate cluster anion is a promising partner for building inorganic–organic hybrid materials comprising ionic liquids. In such hybrid materials, the precise control of the molecular arrangement in the bulk structures is crucial for the emergence of characteristic functions, which can be realized by introducing an amphiphilic moiety into the ionic liquids. Here, an amphiphilic polymerizable imidazolium ionic liquid with a methacryloyl group was firstly hybridized with polyoxometalate anions of octamolybdate ([Mo8O26]4−, Mo8) and silicotungstate ([SiW12O40]4−, SiW12) to obtain inorganic–organic hybrid crystals. The polymerizable ionic liquid with a octyl chain (denoted as MAImC8) resulted in the formation of anisotropic molecular arrangements in the bulk crystal structure, which was compared with the hybrid crystals composed from the polymerizable ionic liquid without a long alkyl chain (denoted as MAIm). Rather densely packed isotropic molecular arrangements were observed in the hybrid crystals of MAIm–Mo8 and MAIm–SiW12 due to the lack of the amphiphilic moiety. On the other hand, using the amphiphilic MAImC8 cation gave rise to a honeycomb-like structure with the Mo8 anion and a layered structure with the SiW12 anion, respectively.
