We empirically investigated Chinese university faculty members' visiting experience and professional growth in American universities. The major data source was qualitative semistructured interviews with 30 Chinese faculty members in the arts, engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences disciplines. The results showed that, despite challenges in preparation, language, and different academic cultures, Chinese visiting scholars were capable of navigating their host programs and achieving professional growth as they moved from peripheral to central participation in their academic community. We also critically discussed how Chinese visiting scholars' academic experience in the United States can be improved, and cast light on the globalization of higher education.

International visiting scholars who temporarily visit universities in different countries for academic purposes are an important group of people in the era of globalization.  However, they have not received much attention in studies or practices. In this article, the definitions and trends of international visiting scholars, their flexible status, and the importance of this population from the perspectives of brain-circulation and internationalization of higher education are discussed.

Although the particle ne has been studied by many linguists, including Chao (1968) and Li & Thompson (1981), only part of its contextual uses has been examined and hasty conclusions drawn. In this paper, data have been collected from Mandarin instructors, visiting scholars from China, novels and other texts published in either Taiwan or Mainland. Thus a wide range of contextual uses of ne has been collected, analysed, and the general/invariant meaning of this form has been extracted. The general/invariant meaning is then put in opposition to that of the zero sign (Ø) in order to determine the relational invariant meaning of this particle. My conclusion is that ne carries the relational invariant meaning [+ constrastiveness] while the zero sign is neutral so far as this semantic feature is concerned.

This article addresses the permeability of the field of China media research and its openness to new ideas; it argues that we need to adopt a wide angle view on research opportunities. Expansion of China's media during the past decade has opened up possibilities for broadening the field. The discussion first identifies boundary tensions as the field responds to transdisciplinary knowledge, before addressing challenges faced by Chinese researchers or visiting scholars in ‘Western’ media environments. Finally, the article addresses what a wide-angle perspective might include.
