Compensatory growth of wapiti (Cervus elaphus) on aspen parkland ranges

We studied the behavior and performance of wapiti on aspen parkland ranges in central Alberta after a winter in which one group received a pelleted alfalfa–barley supplement and another served as a control, on an unsupplemented diet. Wapiti that were lighter at the end of winter because they were young or because they did not receive nutritional supplementation grew faster on summer pasture. This compensatory gain was not explained by any one factor. Intake rates, bite rates, bite sizes, and diet selectivity varied by habitat and date, but did not differ consistently between wapiti receiving supplemented and unsupplemented diets. Irrespective of winter nutrition treatment, wapiti apportioned feeding time to different habitats in relation to foraging returns. However, by feeding longer, those on an unsupplemented diet consumed more forage during the spring flush in mid-April, and over all time periods, lighter individuals consumed more relative to body weight. Diet digestibility as a consequence of either greater forage selectivity or digestive efficiency was unaffected by nutritional history. Resting metabolic rates increased from 495 kJ∙kg−0.75∙d in late winter to 641 kJ∙kg−0.75∙d in summer, but were not significantly related to compensatory gain or reproductive status.

Time-restricted feeding (TRF) is becoming a popular way of eating in physically active populations, despite a lack of research on metabolic and performance outcomes as they relate to the timing of food consumption in relation to the time of exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if the timing of feeding/fasting after exercise training differently affects muscle metabolic flexibility and response to an acute bout of exercise. Male C57BL/6 mice were randomized to one of three groups for 8 weeks. The control had ad libitum access to food before and after exercise training. TRF-immediate had immediate access to food for 6 h following exercise training and the TRF-delayed group had access to food 5-h post exercise for 6 h. The timing of fasting did not impact performance in a run to fatigue despite TRF groups having lower hindlimb muscle mass. TRF-delayed had lower levels of muscle HSL mRNA expression and lower levels of PGC-1α expression but displayed no changes in electron transport chain enzymes. These results suggest that in young populations consuming a healthy diet and exercising, the timing of fasting may not substantially impact metabolic flexibility and running performance.

<p>This study aimed to evaluate the correlations of intake, digestibility and performance with the ingestive behavior of lambs fed diets containing ammoniated buffel grass hay. Buffel grass hay was treated with four levels of urea (0, 18, 36 and 54 g/kg DM basis) and eight repetitions. Thirty-two sheep with no defined breed and an average body weight of 17.7 ± 1.8 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design. It was observed positive correlations were found between the feeding time and the intake of dry matter (r = 0.3120), organic matter (r = 0.3242), neutral detergent fiber (r = 0.3800), total carbohydrates (r = 0.3343) and total digestible nutrients (r = 0.3233). Positive correlations (P &lt; 0.05) were found among the rumination efficiencies, g of DM/h and g of NDF/h with nutrient intake variables, except for ether extract intake. Positive correlations were observed (P &lt; 0.05) between both total weight gain (TWG) and average daily gain (ADG) and the rumination efficiency, g of DM/h (r = 0.3330) and g of NDF/h (r = 0.3304). The feeding and rumination efficiencies have a positive relationship with the total digestible nutrients. The correlation among intake, digestibility and performance variables with the ingestive behavior, it was important for the understanding of diet containing ammoniated buffel grass hay, in which the positive correlation of rumination efficiency with intake and weight gain explained the favorable effect on productive performance of feedlot sheep.</p><p><strong> </strong></p>

This paper addresses the subjects of dance and exile in relation to diverse cultural histories in Germany and their resonances across distinct time periods. As my central example, I introduce Dancing Exile, an ongoing improvisation and performance project developed across borders, cultures, and experiences. The project underscores the work of political and artistic representation past and present in Hamburg, by looking at the lives of contemporary refugees alongside earlier Jewish holocaust histories tied to the cityscape. Sharing the collaborative work of performers from Afghanistan, Germany, and the US, including myself, I discuss the aesthetic and social dynamics of this ongoing creative project in relation to questions of migration, mobility, relationship, and exchange.

Abstract There is a tendency to farm fish in low turbidity water when production takes place in the land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). However, the effect of water turbidity on stress and performance is unknown for many species cultured in RAS. The effect of different turbidity treatments as Formazine Attenuation Units (0 FAU, 15 FAU, and 38 FAU) on feed intake performance (latency, total feeding time, and total feed intake) and physiological blood stress parameters (cortisol, lactate, and glucose) in medium-sized pikeperch ((Sander lucioperca) n = 27, undetermined sex and age) of initial body weights of 508.13g ± 83 g (at FAU 0, 15 and 38, respectively) was investigated. The rearing system consisted of 9 rectangular tanks (200 L per tank). Fish were housed individually (n = 1, per tank, n replicates per treatment = 9). All tanks were connected to a recirculation system equipped with a moving bed biofilter. Feed intake in pikeperch kept at low turbidity (0 FAU) was 25% lower than pikeperch kept at high turbidity (38 FAU) (P&lt;0.01) and also significantly (10.5%) lower compared to feed intake in pikeperch kept at intermediate turbidity (15 FAU) (P&lt;0.01 for 0 FAU vs 15 FAU, feed intake sign. Value as the main effect is P&lt;0.01). Pikeperch kept at low turbidity showed significantly slower feeding response (latency time) towards pellets entering the tank, shorter feeding times (both P&lt; 0.05), and higher glucose blood concentration (73%) in contrast to pikeperch kept at highest turbidity. A reduction of 25% feed intake has obvious economic consequences for any fish farm and present data strongly emphasize the importance of considering the species-specific biology in future RAS farming.

Immediately following weaning, voluntary food intake in the young pig is low and very variable. This can lead to reduced digestive efficiency and poor physical performance. One approach to try to stimulate intake is to manipulate the physical form of the diet. Previously it has been shown that, contrary to popular belief, young pigs are very adaptable with regards to diet presentation and in particular with respect to pellet size(Edge et al., 2000). Pigs from 10 to 56 days of age would consume a 5.0mm pellet as readily as a 1.8mm pellet with no adverse effects on production variables.

A single dose marker method was calibrated to estimate intakes of pasture forage by wapiti. Each animal was offered 250 g of alfalfa–barley pellets labeled with chromic oxide (Cr2O3), and freshly voided fecal samples were collected before and for 6–7 days after administration. Dry fecal output was calculated by dividing the marker dosage by the average fecal marker concentration. Feed intake was then calculated from fecal output and feed digestibility as determined by total fecal collection or the ratio of acid-insoluble ash in feed and feces. The concordance of the marker estimate with measured feed intake was tested on penned wapiti fed alfalfa–barley pellets or herbage. On pasture, the marker method was compared with intakes estimated by the bite-count method. As an additional check, data from pen and field studies were pooled to establish the relationship between metabolizable energy intake and body-weight gain. The single dose marker method provided a practical way to assess feed intake of free-ranging animals. Metabolizable energy requirements for maintenance of live weight were 572 kJ/W0.75 for penned wapiti in winter and 936 kJ/W0.75 for wapiti on summer pasture. Tissues mobilized during winter provided 26 kJ/g, and metabolizable energy requirement per unit liveweight gain was 39 kJ/g on summer pasture.

Discussing the issue of foreign investment in colonial economies, such as those of India and Indonesia, in the first half of the twentieth century gives rise to a number of problems. In addition to the obvious difficulties of data collection there are also complex conceptual and definitional issues. The aim of this paper is to set out what we know about the quantities and performance of foreign investment in the two economies, and to use this information to draw more general conclusions about the economic history of the two areas. In analysing the material only those lines which seem to offer a genuinem comparative perspective will be followed. We are interested in those aspects of the history of foreign investment in India which can tell us something about the history of foreign investment in Indonesia, and vice versa. It is convenient to split the subject into two time periods, 1920-38 and 1945-60.

This study was conducted to determine welfare of broiler chickens fed ad libitum and restricted feed during early (08.00hour) and late (16:00hour) of the day. One hundred and eighty (21d old) broiler chickens were randomly allocated to 4 treatments in a 2x2 factorial arrangement comprising of ad libitum and restricted feeding (75% of ad libitum) quantity at 8 and 16 hours feeding time in three replicates. Data were collected on leg problem, dust bathing, body temperature, mortality and haematology. Result revealed that neither feed quantity nor time had significant (P>0.05) effect on leg problem, dust bathing and mortality of broiler chickens. Broiler chickens under ad lib feed quantity and 16:00hours feeding time had (P<0.05) highest body temperature (40.93oC) while those under ad libitum morning (08:00hours) recorded the least (40.75°C). Pack Cell Volume had similar (P>0.05) increase from 26.75% at the beginning (21d) to 31.25 (%) at 56d with broiler chickens under restricted feeding and fed at 16:00hours feeding time. Basophil count reduced from a range of 0.5-2% (P<0.05) to 1% (P>0.05) with restricted feeding. Also eosinophil reduced from 2-4% (P<0.05) range to 0-2.5% (P>0.05) with restricted feeding while birds under ad lib increased from 0-1% (P<0.05) at 21d to 2.75% (P>0.05) at 56d. Better welfare (good body temperature) of broiler chicken could be achieved with early feeding time irrespective of quantity. However, restricted feeding could be explored in broiler production where reduced basophil, eosinophil and stress are vital for enhanced welfare and performance.

Abstract Wintering Prairie Warblers (Dendroica discolor) were studied in pine forest, desert thorn scrub, and desert wash habitats of the Sierra de Bahoruco, Dominican Republic from October–April 1996–1998 and January–February 1999. We used mist netting, color banding, and extensive resighting of color-banded birds to quantify habitat-specific demographies, site fidelity, and fitness indices. Males predominated early in the season in pine habitat while females predominated in the desert. Sex ratios were more equal through the drier months of late winter although females continued to be more frequent in the desert. Adult birds predominated throughout all habitats and time periods. Nonterritorial wanderers were far more common in desert habitats than in pine forest, and females predominated among these wanderers. Site persistence was moderately high, but variable between habitats and time periods, and was significantly lower in the drier months in thorn scrub than it was in the desert wash or pine forest. Annual return rates were generally high and did not vary significantly among years. Birds showed significant declines in pectoral-muscle-mass scores in both of the desert habitats but not in the pine forest. Data presented here emphasize the importance of dry-season events and habitat heterogeneity in the winter ecology of migratory birds. Fidelidad al Territorio Invernal de Dendroica discolor en la República Dominicana Resumen. En los meses de octubre a abril de 1996 a 1998 y enero y febrero de 1999, investigamos a Dendroica discolor en el bosque de pino, en los matorrales del desierto y en el arroyo seco de desierto en la Sierra de Bahoruco, República Dominicana. Para llevar a cabo esto, se utilizaron redes ornitológicas y anillos colorados. Se realizó una revisión extensiva de las aves anilladas para cuantificar la demografía en los tres hábitats, la fidelidad al territorio invernal, y los índices de aptitud (“fitness”). Al comenzar el invierno, los machos predominaron en el bosque de pino mientras que las hembras lo hicieron en el desierto. La proporción entre los machos y las hembras mantuvo una mayor igualidad entre los sexos en los meses más secos del invierno, aunque hay que considerar que las hembras predominaban en el desierto. Se observó que las aves adultas predominaban en los tres hábitats durante todo el período investigado. Las aves sin territorio eran más comunes en el desierto y eran mayormente hembras. La fidelidad al lugar fue moderadamente alta pero variable entre los hábitats y los períodos y fue significativamente más baja en los meses secos en los matorrales del desierto que en los arroyos secos y los bosques de pino. La tasa anual de retorno de esta especie fue generalmente alta y no varió significativamente entre años. La masa de los músculos pectorales bajó significativamente en las aves que se encontraban en los matorrales del desierto y en el arroyo seco pero no en los bosques de pino. Los datos mencionados aquí acentúan la importancia de eventos que ocurren en la época seca del período invernal y de la heterogenidad del hábitat en la ecología invernal de las aves migratorias.

Herbivores of temperate and arctic zones are confronted during winter with harsh climatic conditions and nutritional shortness. It is still not fully understood how large ungulates cope with this twofold challenge. We found that red deer, similar to many other northern ungulates, show large seasonal fluctuations of metabolic rate, as indicated by heart rate, with a 60% reduction at the winter nadir compared with the summer peak. A previously unknown mechanism of energy conservation, i.e., nocturnal hypometabolism associated with peripheral cooling, contributed significantly to lower energy expenditure during winter. Predominantly during late winter night and early morning hours, subcutaneous temperature could decrease substantially. Importantly, during these episodes of peripheral cooling, heart rate was not maintained at a constant level, as to be expected from classical models of thermoregulation in the thermoneutral zone, but continuously decreased with subcutaneous temperature, both during locomotor activity and at rest. This indicates that the circadian minimum of basal metabolic rate and of the set-point of body temperature regulation varied and dropped to particularly low levels during late winter. Our results suggest, together with accumulating evidence from other species, that reducing endogenous heat production is not restricted to hibernators and daily heterotherms but is a common and well-regulated physiological response of endothermic organisms to energetically challenging situations. Whether the temperature of all tissues is affected, or the body shell only, may simply be a result of the duration and degree of hypometabolism and its interaction with body size-dependent heat loss.
