Diel activity and diet of three sympatric sticklebacks in tidal salt marsh pools

The activity patterns and diet of the adults of three sympatric sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Gasterosteus wheatlandi, and Pungitius pungitius, are compared to learn how three sympatric species share time and food resources. Catch data from unbaited traps indicate that all species are equally diurnal. Females of all species feed almost exclusively in the early morning. No periodicity was observed in the feeding of males compared with females, because males fed infrequently. The diets of the three species were similar though the importance of certain prey items varied with species and sex. Results show that resource partitioning along the dimensions of food type and time are of minor importance in explaining coexistence of the three species during their breeding season.

AbstractNo comparative ecological studies have previously been conducted on the lizards of New Caledonia. This study examines two parameters of resource partitioning-diet and microhabitat, for eleven species of native lizards (Gekkonidae and Scincidae). Differences in diel activity patterns and coarse habitat differences tend to segregate geckos from skinks. Microhabitat and dietary differences were found among four sympatric species in a forest assemblage at Mt. Koyaboa, but retreat sites and some food resources were employed by all. Rock piles and crevices are important retreats for all the forest species studied and are a crude predictor of lizard abundance. Crickets and terrestrial isopods are the most important items in the diet of the predominant gecko Bavayia sauvagii. Though generally considered arboreal, this lizard is frequently active on the ground as well. Ants are an important food source of the forest skink Leiolopisma tricolor, whereas the ubiquitous ground skink Leiolopisma austrocaledonicum eats a wide variety of prey, with smaller individuals selectively taking smaller prey. Larger individuals consume feew large prey items but these may be of great energetic importance.

Baited and unbaited minnow traps were set in Catamaran Brook and the Little Southwest Miramichi River, New Brunswick, and checked every 4 h to determine the diel activity pattern of four species of stream-dwelling fish (threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), juvenile white sucker (Catostomus commersoni), blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus), and lake chub (Couesius plumbeus)). Secondary goals were to determine whether the presence of bait inside minnow traps affected the diel patterns of captures and to compare patterns of lake chub captures in minnow traps with movement through a nearby fish-counting fence. All fish except lake chubs were diurnal, although strict diurnality was less obvious when bait was present in the traps. Lake chubs, which are normally diurnal in the laboratory, were captured mostly near dawn or dusk in unbaited traps, throughout the day in baited traps, and mostly at night at the fish-counting fence. We infer that chubs are active mostly at dawn or dusk, except (i) when strong food cues are present, in which case their activity may extend into the day, and (ii) during the spawning migration, when they move mostly at night. Relative inactivity by chubs during the day may be caused by the presence of piscivorous birds such as kingfishers and common mergansers, whose hunting efficiency may be higher under brighter light.

We determined the temperature preferences of three sympatric species of sticklebacks in the laboratory to see if differences in preferences could explain variation in times of reproductive migration to and from salt marsh tide pools along the southern shore of the St. Lawrence estuary, Quebec. The preferred temperatures were 9–12 °C for Gasterosteus aculeatus (form trachurus) and 11–14 °C for G. wheatlandi, while Pungitius pungitius showed a bimodal preference of 9–10 °C and 15–16 °C. In the field, G. aculeatus and G. wheatlandi left the tide pools earlier in the season than P. pungitius. Our results suggest that temperature preference may play a role in habitat partitioning among these species, hence facilitating their coexistence at high densities in the pools.

There are significant gaps in our knowledge of wild camel ecology; especially the activity patterns that allow them to adapt to desert environments. The wild Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) is a critically endangered species that survives in the extreme desert conditions of Central Asia. We conducted camera trapping surveys at seven watering sites in the northern piedmont of the Altun Mountains from 2010 to 2012. We analyzed the frequency of photo-captures to elucidate the wild camels’ diel activity patterns, and the seasonal variation in their activity at watering sites. We found that these wild camels were predominantly diurnal at watering sites, with an increase in relative activity from sunrise, reaching a peak toward midday, and then gradually decreasing in activity until sunset. The camels visited watering sites more often in winter than in summer. These results provide a guide for water development in the conservation of ungulates in arid areas.

In 224 fish of nine species from Matamek River system 38 genera of parasites were recovered (12 Protozoa, 3 Monogenea, 6 Digenea, 6 Cestoda, 6 Nematoda, 2 Acanthocephala, 3 Copepoda). Six genera of parasites were noted in Salmo salar, Salvelinus fontinalis harbored 17 genera, S. alpinus 5 genera, Osmerus mordax 4 genera, Anguilla rostrata 9 genera, Catostomus catostomus 8 genera, Apeltes quadracus 1 genus, Gasterosteus aculeatus 12 genera, and Pungitius pungitius 9 genera.

We analyzed the thermal ecology and activity patterns of the lizard community from the Restinga of Jurubatiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The broadest activity was that of Tropidurus torquatus, a sit-and-wait forager, while the active foraging teiid Cnemidophorus littoralis had the shortest activity. The nocturnal gekkonid Hemidactylus mabouia was found active during the day only during early morning and late afternoon, when environmental temperatures are low. Body temperature was highest for Cnemidophorus littoralis and lowest for the two Mabuya species. The patterns found here are discussed and compared to those of congeneric species in other habitats in Brazil.

Fifteen extant species of cats inhabit India, and the northeastern region of the country is among the richest with nine species.  Among these are the “standard four”, an assemblage of Clouded Leopard Neofelis nebulosa, Asiatic Golden Cat Catopuma temminckii, Marbled Cat Pardofelis marmorata, and Leopard Cat Prionailurus bengalensis, which also occur across southeastern Asia.  Within India, despite several surveys in this region, very little information exists on the ecology of this assemblage to explain their co-occurrence.  In this paper, we put together data from several independent camera trapping studies over 10 sites across northeastern India to examine and interpret diel activity patterns of this group.  While we present results for all the four species, we focus on two species, the Marbled Cat and Leopard Cat, which are of very similar body size and are potential competitors.  We used kernel density estimates to measure diel activity patterns of all four species and overlap in activity between Marbled Cat and Leopard Cat at the regional scale as well as the point scale.  We obtained 783 captures of the standard four from >27,500 trap nights.  The Asiatic Golden Cat and Marbled Cat were strongly diurnal, Clouded Leopard largely crepuscular and nocturnal, and Leopard Cat largely nocturnal.  The degree of overlap between Marbled Cat and Leopard Cat activity was low and in consensus with other studies across southeastern Asia.  We interpret this as the differing niche spaces of the two cats due to their specific pre-existing adaptations, not restricted to the effects of competition.  The point scale analysis when both cats are captured at the same location and separately show no shift in activity pattern, supporting our hypothesis of pre-existing differences in resources, such as food, playing a major role in facilitating co-existence.  Our study, however, is preliminary and additional information with robust analysis is required to test this finding.
