About 2600 bullfrogs have been captured in three small lakes of the Laurentian region and 1863 among them have been marked and released. The study of the body length growth has been made by three methods (age lecture on pterygoïds, body length histograms, mark–recapture), which give concordant results: 59 mm at 1 year, 81 mm at 2 years, 108 mm at 3 years, 125 mm at 4 years, 137 mm at 5 years, 143 mm at 6 years. The biggest, measuring 162 mm, might have been 8 or 9 years old. The growth rate is the most important between 2 and 3 years, when bullfrogs reach sexual maturity. The body weight is 18 g at 1 year and 40 g at 2 years. At 3 years, the females weigh 101 g and the males 96 g. and at 5 years, the weights are respectively 215 and 194 g. Bullfrogs between 45 and 65 mm eat mostly in sects and the biggest ones eat mostly frogs, tadpoles, fish, and crayfish. The mating calls were heard by the end of May and the spawning occurs between the 20th of June and the 10th of July. The number of eggs (3 826 to 23 540) depends on the size of the individual. Sexual maturity is generally reached at 3 years when bullfrogs measure between 95 and 110 mm. However, some individuals reach sexual maturity at 2 years and some others at 4 years. Our results were compared with those of the literature.

Data on biology, ecology and fishery of asiatic smelt in the Uda River during its spawning migration are analyzed. The spawning begins in May-June in 2–11 km from the river mouth and lasts 3–10 days. Timing of its start varies from May 22 (2014 and 2018) to June 14 (2001), with 24 days difference. The spawning migration begins under the water temperature 6.0 оС, during the spawning the temperature varies from 6.2 to 11.9 оС. The river flow velocity on the spawning grounds is 1.2–2.6 m/s, the river depth varies from 0.3 to 2.5 m. Age of the spawners is 2–8 years, their length is 11.5–32.0 cm and weight 10.8–275.0 g, males usually prevail in number (63–81 %). Depending on the year-class strength, the fish in age of 3 or 4 years prevail among the spawners. After spawning, females leave the spawning grounds immediately — in that time their occurrence in the catches below the spawning grounds can reach 85 %. Size of the spawners decreases during the migration, for males the decreasing was from 19.0 to 15.0 cm in 2007, from 20.2 to 18.8 cm in 2014, from 19.3 to 16.6 cm in 2015, and from 19.4 to 16.0 cm in 2016, for females — from 21.0 to 18.0 cm in 2007, from 22.1 to 19.6 cm in 2014, from 21.3 to 19.0 cm in 2015, and from 24.5 to 16.1 cm in 2016. Annual increments of the smelt body length are 0.7–7.8 cm, on average 3.9 cm, for the body weight 17.1–39.9 g, on average 32.1 g. The minimum registered size of mature male and female was 11.5 and 13.0 cm, respectively. Percentage of the smelt with non-commercial size during spawning migration was 19.2 % in 2007, 0.4 % in 2014, 15.4 % in 2015, and 28.4 % in 2016. The group linear growth of asiatic smelt could be approximated by Bertalanffy equation: L = 30.5 [1 – e–0.317 (t – 0.533)]. Its body length dependence on weight is described by the equation of simple allometry: W = 0.002 L3.380 (determination r 2 = 0.92–0.99). The body weight depends on age as the function: Wt = 2.974t 2.136. Individual absolute fecundity of the smelt in the Uda varies from 11300 to 141300 eggs, on average 52500 eggs in 2016 and 50400 eggs in 2007; these values are close to the smelt fecundity in the Ulbeya and Inya rivers. The fecundity variation generally increases with the age: the registered ranges of absolute fecundity (thousand eggs) were, by age groups: 19.1 for 3 years, 53.5 for 4 years, 37.8 for 5 years, 57.5 for 6 years, and 60.3 for 7 years old fish, the ranges of relative fecundity (eggs/g of body weight) were: 864, 537, 565, 501, and 449 eggs/g for the same age groups. The total population fecundity was 32.7. 109 eggs in 2016. The individual absolute fecundity has the following dependencies on body length, weight, and age: AF(L) = 0.001 L3.437, AF(W) = 0.650 W0.986, and AF(t) = 1.661 t 2.250, respectively. The stock of asiatic smelt in the Uda is represented by migrating fish only. Its fishery was conducted by 8 companies, their total annual landing increased from 10 t in 2012 to 373 t in 2017 and slightly decreased recently: the mean landing for 2013–2019 was 276 t. The spawning biomass of smelt was estimated from 637 to 1734 t, by years, that was about 70 % of the biomass of mature smelt in the Shantar Sea.

The growth performance of seve calves from different Mutura dams served by same bull was studied in a mini cattle ranch. Body measurements were taken and observed for growth over a period of 12 months. The result indicates an apparaent difference among the calves in all parameters measured including body weight, body length, height at withers and heratgirth. Growth rate also showed increased differences among the experimental calves. The birth weights of the seven calves ranged from 9.8 to 13.0kg, with a mean value of 11.42+0.44 while the yearling weights were between 107.80 and 129.48kg with an overall mean of 120.57+2.44. The coefficients of variation for body weight at birth and at 12 monthys were 10.16 and 5.36% respectively. The results further revealed that body weight at yearling age correlated positively with all parameters and these include body length (r=0.81889, r2 = 67.09), height at withers (r=0.8837, r2=78.09). Similarly, body length had a positive correlation with height at withers (r=0.9667, r2=93.45) and heartgirth (r=0.8782, r2=77.13). White height at withers correlated positively with heartgirth (r=0.9291, r2=86.42). Similar trends were obtained in the regression of each of the body measurements on the other in which body weight changes depended more on those of body length (0.56) than on heartgirth (0.34). Judging from the observed variations existing among the individual calves resulting from the different cows at birth and at 12 months of age, maternal rather than paternal influences appeared to be more important in the traits studied.

Critical age, weight and body composition have been suggested as necessary correlates of sexual maturity. A genome scan to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for age and body weight at first egg (AFE and WFE) was conducted on 912 birds from an F2broiler–layer cross using 106 microsatellite markers. Without a covariate, QTL for body WFE were detected on chromosomes 2, 4, 8, 27 and Z and a single QTL for AFE was detected on chromosome 2. With AFE as a covariate, additional QTL for body WFE were found on chromosomes 1 and 13, with abdominal fat pad as covariate a QTL for body WFE was found on chromosome 1. With body WFE as covariate, additional QTL for AFE were found on chromosomes 1, 3, 4, 13 and 27. The QTL generally acted additively and there was no evidence for epistasis. Consistent with the original line differences, broiler alleles had positive effects on body WFE and negative effects on AFE, whereas the phenotypic correlation between the two traits was positive. The mapped QTL for body WFE cumulatively accounted for almost half the body weight difference between the chicken lines at puberty. Overlapping QTL for body WFE and body weight to 9 weeks of age indicate that most QTL affecting growth rate also affect body WFE. The co-localisation of QTL for body weight, growth and sexual maturity suggests that body weight and growth rate are closely related to the attainment of sexual maturity and that the genetic determination of growth rate has correlated effects on puberty.

Gourami (Osphronemus gouramy Lac.) as one of the freshwater fishes, are easily to be cultured but slow in growth rate. One of the ways to enhance their growth rate is by feeding them with high nutritious food. Sargassum sp. and inositol are known compound able to stimulate the growth of some fishes. The study was conducted to determine the effect of Sargassum sp and inositol on commercial feed to the growth rate and survival of juvenile gouramy. The study was conducted from January to April 2015 in Aquatic Laboratory of Biology Department - University of Lampung. Completely randomized designed was used with 4 treatment groups and 5 replications. Anova and Tukey at 5% levels were applied to this study. The result indicated that addition of inositol and Sargassum sp on commercial food significantly affected the gourami growth parameters such as the body weight, body length, body width as well as juvenile gouramy spesific growth rate and their survival rate.

The article presents a comparative analysis of morphometric parameters of growth and development of chicken embryos from hybrid poultry egg productivity at different stages of embryogenesis. In the embryos of Loman Brown, compared with Haysex Brown, there was a statistically significant increase in absolute values of length and body weight at all stages of embryonic development. In late-fetal stage length and weight body of embryos, Lohmann Brown was more on 0,339 cm (P<0,001) and 0,167 g (P<0,01), in early-fetal stage - on 0,713 cm (P<0,01) and 1,282 g (P<0,01), in mid-fetal stage - on 0,673 cm (P<0,001) and 4,226 g (P<0,001), in late-fetal stage - on 0,245 cm (P<0,001) and 6,437 g (P<0,05), respectively. By the late-fetal stage of development, the specific growth rate of length and mass in chicken embryos of both crosses decreased. The specific rate of body length is statistically significantly higher by 0.099% (P<0,05) in the mid-fetal stage and by 0.171% (P<0,001) in the late-fetal stage of Haysex Brown embryos. Specific body mass sizes in the late-fetal stage of cross Haysex Brown embryos are 3.356% larger (P<0,01) than in Loman Brown embryos. At all stages of embryogenesis, the growth rate of the body length of the Haysex Brown and Loman Brown embryos is characterized by negative allometry. Slower growth in length relative to body weight in the late embryonic stage is observed in the embryos of Haysex Brown (b=0,500). In subsequent stages of development, chicken embryos of two different crosses show the same negative allometric growth in body mass length relative to their weight.

The effects of plane of nutrition on the body composition of growing sheep are very apparent when animals are compared at the same age following different nutritional histories. These differences are, however, less obvious when animals of the same breed and sex are compared at the same body weight and at present there is some conjecture whether composition is affected by growth rate. This uncertainty is not limited to fat and protein but includes the bone and ash, fraction and the ash composition.The primary objective of this trial was to study the effects of different growth rates achieved by feeding different amounts of the same concentrate diet on the composition of empty-body gain and on the retention of minerals by growing lambs. A secondary objective was to examine the effect of adding supplementary calcium carbonate to the basal diet at the fast rate of growth.

This experiment was conducted to study the morphometric and genetic diversity of Tegal, Magelang, and their crossbred ducks. Each ten female about twenty weeks old ducks from Tegal, Magelang, Gallang, and Maggal ducks, respectively, were used as the group materialss. The body weight, chest circumference, body length, shank length, neck length, and pubis width were recorded and tested by analysis of variance of one way classification as the morphometric characteristics. Polymorphism of cytochrome b (cyt b) gene on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was analyzed by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Genetic distance was analyzed based on value of heterozygosity, whereas the phylogeny tree was reconstructed using MEGA6 software. The results showed there were highly significant difference (P<0.01) on body weight, chest circumference, body length, and neck length between population, while shank and pubis width were not significant different. The genetic distance between Gallang and Maggal ducks (0.206) was higher than Tegal and Magelang ducks (0.169). It is concluded that the reciprocal crosses increased the morphometric and genetic diversity of Indonesian local duck population.

This study was conducted to investigate and compare the growth performance of four Tilapia strains in hapa nursing with the aim to find out the best strain of tilapia. The research was conducted by four treatments with five replicates each. The tilapia fry were collected from, BFRI source from BFRI HQ, Mymensingh stocked in Treatment-1; unknown source from Hi-Tech Tilapia Hatchery Dagoanbhuiya, Feni in Treatment-2, Philipine strain from Green Field Tilapia Hatchery, Laxmipur in Treatment-3 and fry from Breeding Cohort, Sonar Bangla Hatchery, Bamna, Barguna in Treatment-4. The Individual stocking weight (g) of fry was average 0.01g. The fries were stocked in 12 hapa at same stocking density of 1200 fish/m2. Each of the hapa was 2m × 1m × 1m size and fixed in an earthen ponds. Supplementary feed with 31.29% of protein level consisting of rice bran (25%), mustard oil cake (15%), wheat flour (30%) and fish meal (30%) was given at the rate of 40% of their body weight per day manually, four times a day at the beginning of the experimental period and reduced to 25% of their body weight and continued up to harvesting period. The results showed that fry of Treatment-4 strain was the best strain and had significantly (p < 0.05) higher final mean body weight (FMBW), mean body weight gain (MBWG), specific growth rate (SGR) (9.75%), gross yield (GY) (2.13) and Net yield (NY) (2.12) than the Treatment-1 , Treatment-2 strains and Treatemnt-3 strain. Treatment-4 strain had the fastest growth rate, whereas the lowest performing strain was that from Treatment-2. We also analyzed survival rate of the fish from stocking to harvest, survival rate was highest in Treatment-4 strain (80%) where lowest is Treatment-3. Treatment-4 stain also showed the best feed conversion ratio (FCR) 1.62 than others. Considering the overall performance it can be concluded that tilapia strain collected from Breeding Cohort source is best among the four strains. However, further research may still be needed to compare more strains from different water body to evaluate the genetic potential for Tilapia.International Journal of Natural Sciences (2015), 5(2) 98-106

SummaryThe Moroccan goat livestock is characterized by the existence of different phenotypes distributed among diverse geographic locations. The objective of this study was to analyse the morphometric traits that differentiate the Draa breed from the other local populations raised in areas close to its cradle zone. Eight morphometric measurements were taken on 287 goats in South-eastern and Southern Morocco. The variance analysis, fitting a model that included the random effect of animal and the fixed effects of population, gender and age of animal, was used. Mahalanobis distances were calculated between identified populations and an Unweighted Pairs Group Method Analysis tree was built. Draa goats had the highest height at withers (61.5 cm), heart girth (74.4 cm), body length (64.6 cm) and live body weight (27.2 kg). These morphometric traits varied significantly among populations as well as the age and the gender of animal. The most discriminating traits between the identified populations were the body length, the heart girth, the hair length, the horn length, the ear length and the live body weight. Draa animals had the largest genetic distances from the other populations and appeared more distinguished from them. This differentiation can contribute in defining the phenotypic standard of the breed and in orienting its genetic improvement programs in the future.
