Virtually all biological characteristics of organisms change with age, and thus, to assess the impact of these changes, accurate aging techniques are essential. However, many current methods are unable to accurately distinguish among adults of different ages. We determined the age of yellow-pine chipmunks (Tamias amoenus) from the Rocky Mountains of Alberta using eye lens masses, annuli from mandible sections, and annuli from femurs. Each of these methods was assessed against nine known-age animals and seven animals that had not been caught previously and were presumed to be juveniles. Eye lens masses could distinguish juveniles from adults but not adults of different ages. Mandibular sections were not practical in this species because of excessive tearing during sectioning. Femoral sections precisely predicted age. We found that the number of adhesion lines, minus one, accurately represented the ages of adults ranging from 1 to 5 years old. Femoral annuli have not previously been used to age mammals and our results suggest that they may be useful in aging other mammals, especially rodents.

Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the impact on termite feeding of wood sample size and species and test photoperiod in standard tests. Native species (Reticulitermes flavipes) and introduced species (Coptotermes formosanus) were tested in an American Wood-Preservers' Association E1 standard laboratory test. For testing involving treated wood, southern yellow pine was determined to be preferable to spruce based on its treatability and availability. Test blocks of 25 by 25 by 6 mm were deemed adequate for testing, with large blocks presenting difficulty with retrieval of termites to determine mortality and smaller blocks being consumed too rapidly by the termites in the test. Photoperiod comparisons were not significantly different for R. flavipes; however, C. formosanus indicated a preference for 100 percent darkness. Therefore, the recommendation is to maintain tests using each species in a 100 percent dark environment.

Context. Age estimation techniques such as gyrochronology and magnetochronology cannot be applied to stars that have exchanged angular momentum with their close environments. This is especially true for a massive close-in planetary companion (with a period of a few days or less) that could have been strongly impacted by the rotational evolution of the host star, throughout the stellar evolution, through the star-planet tidal interaction. Aims. In this article, we provide the community with a reliable region in which empirical techniques such as gyrochronology can be used with confidence. Methods. We combined a stellar angular momentum evolution code with a planetary orbital evolution code to study in detail the impact of star-planet tidal interaction on the evolution of the surface rotation rate of the star. Results. We show that the interaction of a close-in massive planet with its host star can strongly modify the surface rotation rate of this latter, in most of the cases associated with a planetary engulfment. A modification of the surface rotation period of more than 90% can survive a few hundred Myr after the event and a modification of 10% can last for a few Gyr. In such cases, a gyrochronology analysis of the star would incorrectly make it appear as rejuvenated, thus preventing us from using this method with confidence. To try overcome this issue, we proposed the proof of concept of a new age determination technique that we call the tidal-chronology method, which is based on the observed pair Prot, ⋆–Porb of a given star-planet system, where Prot, ⋆ is the stellar surface rotational period and Porb the planetary orbital period. Conclusions. The gyrochronology technique can only be applied to isolated stars or star-planet systems outside a specific range of Prot, ⋆–Porb. This region tends to expand for increasing stellar and planetary mass. In that forbidden region, or if any planetary engulfment is suspected, gyrochronology should be used with extreme caution, while tidal-chronology could be considered. This technique does not provide a precise age for the system yet; however, it is already an extension of gyrochronology and could be helpful to determine a more precise range of possible ages for planetary systems composed of a star between 0.3 and 1.2 M⊙ and a planet more massive than 1 Mjup initially located at a few hundredths of au from the host star.

<b>Introduction:</b> Lipodystrophy is a skin composition disorder. One of the kinds of lipodystrophy is cellulite. Differences in fat tissue composition between woman and man are the cause that lipodystrophy affects women more often. It affects women of different ages - from maturation to menopause. Is estimated that this problem affects 85% of women above the age of 20. <br/><b>Purpose:</b> To analyse the impact of cosmetic procedures and diets on skin affected by cellulite. <br/><b>Materials and methods:</b> The study was conducted based on a survey using a proprietary questionnaire filled by 57 clients of beauty salon Health and Beauty Center “Anamed”, located in Lomza. The study was conducted between 12.2014 and 01.2015. <br/><b>Results:</b> The diet and treatments performed by the respondents were analyzed and their subjective effectiveness assessed. After analyzing the data, it was observed that one-way actions do not bring the expected results. In order to reduce cellulite, it is necessary to undertake multidirectional activities. <br/><b>Conclusions:</b> Cosmetic treatments minimize cellulite changes and improve the overall condition of the skin. Proper healthy eating habits should be promoted because they help to act in the treatment and more importantly preventive in the formation of cellulite.

The paper investigates the foreign words used in spoken Jordanian Arabic in Irbid city. It also examines the causes behind using them. The data are collected by means of direct interviews and observations. The sample of the study was chosen from fifty participants living in Irbid city. They were thirty males and twenty females who cover different ages, genders and different educational background. The results show that Jordanians use different borrowed words in their daily conversations. English and Turkish are the main source of borrowing these words.
