20β-Dihydrocortisone has been isolated from the peripheral plasma of spawned male and female salmon. The plasma steroid was identified by its chromatographic mobility and that of its diacetate as well as the sulphuric acid chromogen of the steroid. The steroid was transformed, by sodium bismuthate, to adrenosterone, which was identified by chromatography and sodium borohydride reduction to 17β-ol-Δ4-androstene-3,11-dione. Spawned females had 2.1 μg of 20β-dihydrocortisone per 100 ml of plasma. An ultraviolet-absorbing substance with the chromatographic mobility of 20α- and 20β-dihydrocortisol could not be identified with either of these substances.
