Technical efficiency and industry evolution in southern U.S. pulpwood harvesting

This research measures technical efficiency among methods of pulpwood harvesting in the southern United States in 1979 and 1987. An econometric frontier production function is modeled using analysis of covariance methods, which results in consistent estimates of method effects. Employed efficiency measures isolate economies of scale from what can be termed pure technical efficiency. Harvesting methods utilizing either extremely low or high capitalization levels were the most technically efficient. Longwood grapple skidder systems were the most efficient, and intermediate systems least efficient. This suggests a noncontinuous improvement in harvesting technology that has investment implications for small producers interested in upgrading low capitalization systems. Scale economies represented only a small percentage of the total efficiency effect, the rest being attributed to efficiency of method. Thus, too much emphasis may be placed on the impacts of scale economies when analyzing structural change in the industry. Efficiency measures correlate well with the observed evolution of the industry over the period and conform with the predictions of economic theory.

The research examines the technical efficiency (TE) and economies of scale for the Malaysian Real Estate Investment Trust (M-REITs) from 2010 to 2014, using a non-parametric approach of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The nonparametric approach of Variable Return to Scale DEA (VRS-DEA model) was used to estimate the efficiency scores for M-REITs. The negative inefficient value for the technical inefficiencies is identified as a result of both poor input utilisation (managerial inefficiency) and failure of M-REITs to operate at optimum scale (scale inefficiency). The mean technical efficiency (TE) measures ranged from as low as 41.70% in 2011 to as high as 84.30% in 2014. Despite having the Sharia requirement, Islamic REITs in Malaysia provide an effective investment opportunity evidenced by the higher scores for all efficiency measures, as compared to conventional REITs for the period under study. Pure technical inefficiency has a greater deviation in the efficient frontier than scale inefficiency, suggesting that M-REITs inputs are not fully minimised to produce more outputs. With regard to scale inefficiency, M-REITs are operating at economies of scale, indicating the importance of expansion or growth to improve on efficiency performance. This will then allow M-REIT managers to formulate better strategic investment decisions.

This study investigates a number of factors influencing technical efficiency of Greek farms participating in the 1994 European Union (EU) farm credit program. Technical efficiency measures are obtained within the framework of a parametric stochastic frontier. Factors showing a positive effect on technical efficiency are value of liabilities, number of hours of mechanical operation, large land size, and rental land, whereas those showing a negative effect are value of EU product subsidies, value of off-farm family income, and hired labor. The value of investments incurred by farms because of their participation in the 1994 farm credit program does not show any significant effect on technical efficiency. The predicted levels of technical efficiency indicate that the average technical efficiency of farms 3 years after participating in the 1994 farm credit program is lower than the average technical efficiency of the same farms the year before participating in the program. Thus, the program has failed to increase the efficiency of farms.

Increasing demand for Crude Palm Oil (CPO) as the vegetable oil was causing the industry to cultivate palm oil increased, so that the energy required to produce CPO also increased. The purpose of this study is to identify the type, source and calculate the amount of energy needs, calculate the level of efficiency and energy savings opportunities. Stages of the research are  initial energy analysis, a detailed energy, and energy analysis in processing systems. Based on the research results, to produce each kg of CPO processing capacity of 60 ton TBS / hour with a recovery rate of 20.59% of primary energy needs of 16.200679 MJ / kg. Real boiler efficiency of 45.69%, the real efficiency of the turbine was 94, 86%. Turbine efficiency  to generate electrical energy by 1.09%, the technical efficiency of 66.80% turbines, diesel generators technical efficiency of 47.25%, the technical efficiency of electric motors by 59.37%.  The total efficiency  of  electricity  use by 4,75%, the efficiency of diesel estate of 1.379% and the efficiency of the use of steam at 93.77%. Energy can be saved by 0.0442 MJ / kg with a description of human powered energy of 0.0004316 MJ / kg, energy electrical energy by .04372 MJ / kg. While energy can be stored on the excess energy to fuel biomass boiler was 1.45 MJ / kg

This research  aims  to analyses  factors  influence  on production  and  resources  allocation  of soybeans  by farmer  at  West Lombok.  Production  function  was estimated  from survey data and technical  efficiency  was used to indicate  farm management  level  through maximum  likelihood,  which  was transformed  into frontier stochastic  production  function.  The land  size,  fertilizer  (urea and  TSP), labor  and pesticide  influence  the production  of soybean  at site.  The technical efficciency  level of Soybean fann was 95,6 percent   The  usage of TSP and pesticide reached allocative efficiency while urea and seeds were al/ocative efficiency yet Key words:  technical  effICiency, allocative  effICiency, and stochastic  frontier  production  function.

This study analyzes the factors influencing gambier productivity, analyzes the technical efficiency of gambier farming, and analyzes the factors affecting gambier farming's technical efficiency. This research was conducted in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, a gambier production center in West Sumatra. Data were analyzed using the Cobb Douglas stochastic frontier production function. The results showed that the factors that significantly influenced gambier's productivity were labor, NPK fertilizer, plant age, number of trees, varieties, and technology. The number of labor, fertilizer factor, plant age, number of trees, and seedling varieties had a positive effect on gambier productivity. In contrast, NPK fertilizer and technology had a negative impact on gambier productivity. The technical efficiency level of gambier farming started from 0.25 to 0.99 with an average level of 0.76. It means that farmers are technically efficient but can still increase gambier productivity if they use production inputs appropriately and adequately. Factors that significantly influence technical efficiency are age, farming experience, and technology. Older farmers will have a higher level of technical efficiency compared to young age. The lower the farming experience, the more technically efficient the farmer is. Farmers who use the hydraulic jack system technology are more efficient than farmers who use the jack system technology

Batik is known since 17th century. In 2009, UNESCO took batik as the world heritage. Likewise, Batik Semarang. Batik Semarang is unpopular than other batik’s products on Central Java. Their productivity is on small scale and only for environment surroundings. The small productivity causes the high price on their product selling. The aims of this research are to estimate the function of production and technical efficiency of batik Semarang. Sample is 67 owners of small scale batik Semarang industry. Analysis instrument is Stochastic Frontier Production Function. The measuring of production efficiency are material, support material, labor force, instruments, kerosene, firewood, and large of trade location. The result shows that free variable is found significant and have an appropriate signal. Other result shows that technical efficiency of batik Semarang industry is 88, 9%

The aim of this work is to introduce a first analysis concerning the relevance that ownership and financial structure, but also market dimension and business portfolios, have on the technical efficiency of Italian water utilities. Even though scholars have provided information on the influence of some dimensional or geographical variables, mono-utility character or ownership on efficiency, no paper, to the best of our knowledge, has ever considered the presence of all these hedonic variables as efficiency shifters or drivers. Antonioli and Filippini (2001) have not included ownership; Benvenuti and Gennari (2008) have included ownership and multi-utility strategy, but excluded the geographical dimension; Fabbri and Fraquelli (2000) have not included geographical location, business strategy or ownership; furthermore, most analyses of the Italian water sector have focused on the ATO level (investments, labour costs) and not on utility performances. We have estimated four heteroskedastic stochastic production frontiers: two different parametric models, where the hedonic dummy mono is either in the model as an additional variable or it is used to parameterize the variance of the inefficiency term; two competitive statistical formulations have also been introduced to specify the inefficiency component distribution, that is, the half normal and the exponential distributions. The most important findings of this paper can be summarized as follows. The labour, capital and other input elasticities are always highly significant, positive and quite stable in all the performed models, as expected for a well-behaved production function. The main results show that the mono-business strategy is not efficient; at the same time, operating water and sewerage together implies higher efficiency than water- only management. Theoretically, the population density can have an ambiguous effect on efficiency: on one hand, it could be more expensive to serve dispersed customers, but, on the other, it could generate congestion problems. It could be argued that the second effect prevails, therefore a higher density is accompanied by a higher inef- ficiency. The analysis points out that the variance of the idiosyncratic term is a function of the size of the firm, which is measured as the number of connected properties; the null hypothesis, that the firms use a constant returns-to-scale technology, has also been rejected. Considering the 1994 reform, it is possible to state that the integration of water and sewerage has substantially been positive; at the same time, the economies of scale and the ambiguity of density justify the division into provincial basins. The role of the private sector in the water industry, in agreement with previous literature, has neither a positive nor a negative impact on efficiency and ownership is simply not influent [obviously the quality of service should be considered, although the same indifference seems to emerge (Dore et al., 2001)]. Southern Italy suffers from a higher degree of inefficiency (also recently confirmed by Svimez, 2009), and this is probably the most important issue that has to be dealt with, because of the risks of drought and watering bans in those Regions during summer.

The purpose of this study is to determine technical efficiency, alocative/price efficiency and economies efficiency using production factors, and to know about economies of scale of seasoning and flavoring Industry in Indonesia. The data used in this research were secondary data with five digit ISIC (10772) using panel data and for the analytical techniques used in this study include multiple linear regression analysis as production function with stochastic production frontier approach. The result shows that labor production function has positive but insignificant impact on the production, while capital and material has positive and significant impact on the production. The value of technical efficiency is 0,7796 or 77,96% shows that the used of production factors is inefficient technically, the value of alocative/price efficiency is 1,7703 that is mean inefficient, the value of economies efficiency is 1,3801 7703 means that economies efficiency has not achieved the standard yet, and economies of scale is about 1,0203, means that the economies of scale is always increase or commonly known as incresing return to scale but, the value of economies of scale is equal to one, so that the economies of scale can be known as constant return to scale
