The effect of SF6 as a specific scavenger for eaq− in the photolysis of aqueous solutions has been studied. The photolysis of aqueous solutions of I− with 2537 Å light and Br−, Cl−, and SCN− with 1849 Å light containing [SF6] = 1.4 × 10−3 M results in the formation of F−, the yields of which are [Formula: see text], 1.98 ± 0.05, 2.40 ± 0.08, and 2.07 ± 0.05, respectively. By comparison with [Formula: see text]from N2O saturated solutions the relationship [Formula: see text] was confirmed. Assuming the same ratio, [Formula: see text] for pure H2O and aqueous HPO42− with 1849 Å radiation and [SF6] = 2.4 × 10−4 is 0.013 ± 0.002 and 0.30 ± 0.07, but these are considered minimum values due to the low concentration of SF6. Despite these yields HPO42− could be used as buffer in 1849 Å photolysis due to its low extinction at this wavelength.

This study discussed the photoreduction of Cr(VI) ions in aqueous solutions by UV/TiO2photocatalytic processes under various operational factors. Experimental results showed that the removal rate of Cr(VI) increased with decreasing solution pH values and with increasing dosages of organic compounds, indicating that the recombination rate of electrons and h+can be retarded in the reaction systems by the addition of the scavenger, thus raising the reaction rate of Cr(VI). The relationship of the chemical reaction rate of Cr(VI), TiO2dosage, and changes of Cr(VI) concentration was expressed by the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation. Comparing the experimental results of two different doping metals in modified TiO2photoreduction systems, the removal rate of Cr(VI) by the Ag/TiO2process is larger, possibly because the electron transferring ability of Ag is superior to that of Cu. However, the photoreduction rates of Cr(VI) by modified UV/TiO2processes are worse than those by a nonmodified commercial UV/TiO2process.

Varied surface tension and hydrogen bonding in the mixed solution were discussed. For this purpose, the OH stretching bands were fitted into three Gaussian components to which different hydrogen-bonded water samples were assigned. Furthermore, the microstructures of binary solution were analyzed. The results indicated that the surface tension decreases dramatically with the enhancement of hydrogen bonds in the mixture. A spectroscopic method for studying the macroscopic properties of aqueous solutions was employed. The direct experiment results provided the relationship between surface tension and microstructure in aqueous solutions.

A modified criterion γ’ (=Tx/(1.5Tg+Tl) of glass-forming ability (GFA) for metallic glasses is suggested on the basis of present criterion γ (=Tx/(Tg+Tl) that correlates well with some systems including metallic glasses, some glassy oxides and some cryo-protective aqueous solutions. Results show that the modified criterion γ’ shows stronger correlation with the critical cooling rate Rc for metallic glasses than the criterion γ, which is demonstrated by a value increase in the statistical correlation parameter R2 from 0.9022 to 0.9037. Furthermore, a modified equation is given to reflect the relationship between γ’ and Rc.
