Amine oxides, azoxybenzenes, and nitrones are deoxygenated in good yields by iron pentacarbonyl in hot butyl ether. Substituted nitro- and nitrosobenzenes are reduced under these conditions to azo and/or amino compounds, depending on the nature and location of the substituents; some evidence for nitrene or nitrene-like intermediates in these reactions is presented.

Iron pentacarbonyl in boiling butyl ether converts primary amides or thionamides to nitriles, and benzanilide or thionbenzanilide to N-benzylideneaniline. Diiron nonacarbonyl reacts with p-methoxy-thionbenzamide to form a complex C22H16N2S2O8Fe2; a possible structure is proposed.

IR spectroscopy investigated structural and group composition of base mineral oils isolated from the vacuum distillate by selective purification of N-methylpyrrolidone and the low temperature dewaxing in the presence of a solvent. The role of the latter was carried out by the systems acetone - toluene, acetone - methyl tertiary butyl ether, methyl ethyl ketone - toluene, acetone - toluene - modifying additive. It was shown that the chemical composition of the group of base oils and slack waxes is defined as the nature of the solvent to the dewaxing, and oils sequence of purification steps.

Nationwide surveys of 1,4-dioxane and methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE) levels in raw water used for the drinking water supply were conducted at 91 water treatment plants in Japan in 2001 and 2002, prior to the revision of the drinking water quality standards. 1,4-dioxane was widely and continuously detected in raw water samples and its occurrence was more frequent and its concentrations higher in groundwater than in surface water. However, its maximum concentration in raw water was much lower than its new standard value (50 μg/L), which was determined as a level of 10−5 excessive cancer risk to humans. Trace levels of MTBE were also detected in several surface water samples.
