Direct formation of 4- or 4,6-alkyl and aryl substituted diethyl 3-hydroxyphthalates from the correspondingly substituted Diels–Alder adducts of 2- or 2,5-substituted furans and diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate is promoted by AlCl3 in CH2Cl2 at room temperature. The first adduct of 2,5-diphenylfuran to be isolated has been obtained from the same reaction at −20°. The aromatic compounds can be obtained alternatively by treating the adducts with BF3 or H2SO4: where the adducts can be prepared by conventional means this two-step procedure has resulted in greatly improved yields. Adducts of furan and furfuryl alcohol are similarly converted to substituted phenols. HCl effected conversion only in the case of adducts carrying a bridgehead aryl substituent; in all other cases HCl added to the substituted double bond. The mechanism of the adduct rearrangement is discussed.

Selected hetaryl and aryl thioketones react with acetylenecarboxylates under thermal conditions in the presence of LiClO4 or, alternatively, under high-pressure conditions (5 kbar) at room temperature yielding thiopyran derivatives. The hetero-Diels–Alder reaction occurs in a chemo- and regioselective manner. The initially formed [4 + 2] cycloadducts rearrange via a 1,3-hydrogen shift sequence to give the final products. The latter were smoothly oxidized by treatment with mCPBA to the corresponding sulfones.

The AlCl3-promoted reactions of 2-methyl- and of 2-phenylfuran with ethyl propiolate afford as major products ethyl 5-hydroxy-2-methyl- and 2-phenylbenzoates (6a, 6b). Also isolated as minor by-products of these reactions are ethyl 3-(2-furyl-5-methyl)acrylate (5a), ethyl 3-(2-furyl-5-phenyl)acrylate (5b), ethyl 3,3-di(2-furyl-5-methyl)propionate (10a), ethyl 3,3-di(2-furyl-5-phenyl)propionate (10b), and ethyl 2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzoate (8a).

Two different approaches have been employed to enhance the reactivity of 1-alkyl-1,2-diphospholes – the introduction of electron-withdrawing groups either at the phosphorus atoms or in the para-position of the arene ring. The alkylation of sodium 1,2-diphospha-3,4,5-triphenylcyclopentadienide with alkyl halides Hal-CH2-R (R = CN, COOEt, OMe, CH2OEt) results in corresponding 1-alkyl-3,4,5-triphenyl-1,2-diphospholes (alkyl = CH2CN (1a), CH2COOEt (1b), CH2OMe (1c), and (CH2)2OEt (1d)), which spontaneously undergo the intermolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions at room temperature to form the mixture of the cycloadducts, 2a–c, respectively. However the alkylation of sodium 1,2-diphospha-3,4,5-tri(p-fluorophenyl)cyclopentadienide with ethyl iodide leads to stable 1-ethyl-3,4,5-tris(p-fluorophenyl)-1,2-diphosphole (1e), which forms the [4 + 2] cycloadduct 2,3,4,4a,5,6-hexa(p-fluorophenyl)-1-ethyl-1,7,7a-triphospha-4,7-(ethylphosphinidene)indene (2e) only upon heating up to 60 °C. With further heating to 120 °C with N-phenylmaleimide, the cycloadducts 2a–c and 2e undergo the retro-Diels–Alder reaction and form only one product of the [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction 3a–с, 3e with good yields up to 65%.

Furfural is converted to suitably substituted AB synthon 21 for 12a-deoxypillaromycinone in 10 steps by a sequence involving the following key steps: intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of a furan, 5-endo-trig cleavage of the oxabicyclo adducts 18, and catalytic hydrogenation of the double bond of a tetrasubstituted enone to produce 19. Enones 21a and 21b obtained by dehydrogenation of 19a and 19b, respectively, are then annulated with ethyl 2-methoxy-6-methylbenzoate in a four-step procedure to generate tetracyclic products 25 in 14 steps from furfural.

Several derivatives of the vaulted biaryl ligand VAPOL were prepared and evaluated as chiral ligands for aluminum Lewis acids in the catalytic asymmetric Diels–Alder reactions of methyl acrylate and methacrolein with cyclopentadiene. The substituents on VAPOL were introduced into the 6- and 6′-positions in an effort to further extend the chiral pocket of the major groove, which contains the phenol functions at the 4- and 4′-positions. The set of four new ligands that have been prepared have the following groups introduced into the 6- and 6′-positions of VAPOL: bromide, methyl, phenyl and 3,5-di-t-butylphenyl. All of these ligands give lower asymmetric inductions than the unsubstituted VAPOL for the Diels–Alder reactions of both methyl acrylate and methacrolein. The positive cooperativity of added carbonyl compounds on the autoinduction in the Diels–Alder reaction of methyl acrylate and cyclopentadiene were also investigated with the VANOL and VAPOL ligands as well as the 6,6′-dibromo and 6,6′-diphenyl derivatives of VAPOL. Only the reaction with VAPOL showed any significant positive cooperativity. The reaction with VANOL was sluggish at –78 °C, but at higher temperatures, the reaction did exhibit positive cooperativity that was similar to that of VAPOL. Finally, no positive cooperativity was observed with the VAPOL ligand for the reaction of methacrolein and cyclopentadiene.Key words: Diels–Alder, asymmetric catalysis, vaulted biaryl ligands, VANOL, VAPOL.
