A vacancy model, originally developed for the description of diffusion in substitutional alloys, is modified for application to aqueous solutions, including those containing ionic species. The results obtained with this model are similar to those of two recently published methods for estimating L-coefficients in dilute multicomponent liquid systems.Agreement with experimental L-coefficients at relatively high concentrations can be improved for this model by assuming that the jump probability of a diffusing species is inversely proportional to the relative viscosity of the mixture. Good agreement is then found for some systems up to combined solute concentrations of 3 M.

The densities of the binary aqueous solutions of sodium polyacrylate (NaPM) at 20°C, 25°C, and 300C up to 0.17 m and LiCI at 25°C and 300C up to 3.13 m were measured using a vibrating tube digital densitimeter. The measured experimental data were then fitted to the polynomial d = do + IA;m'. The densities of the ternary aqueous systems NaPM-NaCI, NaPM-LiCI, and NaPM-sucrose were also =1 measured from 20°C to 30°C. The isopycnotic equation, Imi / moi was used to predict the densities of the ternary aqueous systems mentioned. The results show that predicted and observed density values are in good agreement. The overall percentage error of density prediction for the system NaPM-NaCI-H20 is 0.067. For the system NaPM-LiCI-HP,the overall percentage error is 0.074; and, for the system NaPM-sucrose-H20, the overall percentage error is 0.065.

The pKa of an acid is important for determining the dissociation and thermodynamic properties of solutions containing it. However, the value of pKa is typically determined at dilute limit and cannot be used to describe properties of the solution at high concentrations. In this work, we propose an approach to determine the concentration independent equilibrium constant Keq based on pKa and predicted activity coefficients. The Keq determined is applied to predict the degree of dissociation over whole concentration range for weak to strong acids. The pH of acid aqueous solution is predicted over whole concentration range, showing a good agreement with experiments. Based on this approach, we found that the vapor pressures of acid aqueous solutions strongly depend on the degree of dissociation of acids. The proposed model provides useful insights to link the macroscopic properties of acid aqueous solutions to its microscopic dissociation phenomena over the whole concentration range.

Aim: Quinoa is a popular source of protein, minerals and alternative to traditional grains. The objective of this study is to introduce the Quinoa in the semi-arid zone of Sindh province of Pakistan. Method: A variety of NARC-9 from the agricultural Punjab province was cultivated and subjected to analyze the growth, morphological characters of the varieties obtained, saponin, protein and the elemental composition viz. Cd, Cu, Fe, K, Na, Pb, and Zn. Result: The result demonstrated the optimum growth and no disease were found in the experimental area. At least three major varieties of quinoa were obtained. Seed morphological data of these three quinoa cultivars were collected. The average saponin levels were quite reasonable. Overall proteins band pattern revealed very high polymorphism in quinoa cultivars and the results were also in good agreement with earlier studies. Conclusion: All quinoa cultivars of Madinat al-Hikmah showed high concentrations of albumin than globulin concentrations (i.e. 48-52% and 24-27%, respectively) as compared to control seeds from market that had similar concentrations of the two fractions i.e. 35.58% and 37.68%, respectively. Likewise, low concentrations of prolamin 14-16% and glutelin 11-12% compared to control seeds 13% rank our crop much better quality than the imported one in the market. The trend of elemental accumulation was followed as K >Na >Fe >Zn >Cu >Pb >Cd, while for comparison it was Na >K >Zn >Fe >Cu >Pb >Cd >Pb for wheat grown under similar conditions. Traditional grains together make a major contribution to the total nutritional element intake of the average Pakistani citizen through diet, not only because of large amounts consumed, but also in part by suitable levels of their proteins and elemental up take for good health. Thus the successful cultivation of quinoa in the semi-arid zone of Sindh will certainly prove beneficial.

Based on the earlier paper introducing a concept of the apparent parachor of a solute in the solution, we have eliminated in the present work algebraically the effect which is introduced into this quantity by the additivity of the apparent molal volumes. The difference remaining from the apparent parachor after substracting the contribution corresponding to the apparent volume ( for which the present authors suggest the name metachor) was evaluated from the experimental values of the surface tension of aqueous solutions for a set of 1,1-, 1,2- and 2,1-valent electrolytes. This difference showed to be independent of concentration up to the very high values of the order of units mol dm-3 but it was directly proportional to the number of the free charges (with a proportionality factor 5 ± 1 cm3 mol-1 identical for all studied electrolytes). The metachor can be, for this reason, a suitable characteristic for detection of the association of ions and formation of complexes in the solutions of electrolytes, up to high concentrations where other methods are failing.

AbstractSurface functional groups have a strong influence on the deposition and final state of nanoparticles adsorbed on to the surface, a role discussed by Professor Spencer in his work. This tribute to Spencer explores the formation of hydroxyls, thiosulfates, sulfites and sulfur atoms on carbon (HOPG) surfaces and their effect on the deposition of gold and palladium from aqueous solutions. Hydroxyls formed from ammonium hydroxide treatment have identical behaviour to those formed by acid treatment, and gold adsorption from Au3+ solutions gives Au0 initially, with Au3+ formed at higher concentrations on these surfaces. In contrast, palladium adsorption is hindered by the presence of the hydroxyls and there is no indication of any reduction to the metallic state. Ammonium thiosulfate adsorbs dissociatively from aqueous solutions on HOPG if the surface is pre-activated by the presence of surface hydroxyls. At low concentrations of ammonium thiosulfate, adsorbed sulfite and sulfur are formed in equimolar concentrations whereas adsorption of high concentrations of ammonium thiosulfate gives some degree of molecular adsorption, with evidence in XP spectra for an ammonium ion and a sulfur 2p peak at 282.9 eV attributed to the undissociated thiosulfate ion. Both sulfur and the sulfite are stable at the surface in neutral solutions but the sulfite desorbs when treated with acidified solutions (~ pH ≤ 6). These two groups are also stable at 373 K but begin to desorb by 473 K. Exposure to a weak chloroauric acid solution causes the desorption of the sulfite and formation of a gold species with an XP binding energy of 84.6 eV; we cannot determine from the present data whether this peak is due to a Au(I) state or very small nanoparticles of Au(0). AbstractAn experimental study of the flow-induced scission behaviour of four star hydrolyzed polyacrylamides (HPMA) with different arms during planar elongational flow in a cross-slot flow cell is described. The results showed that the shear stability of linear HPAM in distilled water was not essentially different from star HPAM. Polymer scission was not observed in either system in a shear rate range from 20,000 to 100,000s-1, which can be attributed to the strong polyelectrolyte behaviour of HPAM in distilled water. However, at the same shear rate, the star HPAMs exhibited superior shear stability in comparison to the linear HPAMs in aqueous solutions containing NaCl (CNaCl=0.2-1.0%wt) and, in particular, the initial reduction rate of relative viscosity (R) decreased with the degree of branching of the HPAMs. In addition, it was found that the R of five HPAMs in NaCl aqueous solutions exhibited an exponential dependence on shear rate, in which the coefficient C1 can be used to quantitatively evaluate shear stability. In star HPAM NaCl aqueous solutions, the increase of R with shear rate is very likely due to the decrease of the hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of these HPAMs, while the increase of R with NaCl concentrations can be attributed to the relatively low viscosity of these polymers at high NaCl concentrations.

The Raman spectra of oleums, i.e. mixtures of sulphur trioxide and sulphuric acid, have been re-examined. Similar measurements on the sulphur trioxide – deuterosulphuric acid (D2SO4) system are also reported. The experimental results and conclusions of previous similar work on oleums are discussed. By comparison of the spectra of oleums with those of the polysulphuryl halides it is shown that the polysulphuric acids H2S2O7 and H2S3O10 are present in this system. The increase in the frequency of the SO2 stretching vibrations with increasing concentration of sulphur trioxide gives evidence for the existence of higher polysulphuric acids such as H2S4O13 at high concentrations of sulphur trioxide. In relatively concentrated oleum, sulphur trioxide monomer and trimer are also present. It is shown that the self-dissociation of liquid H2S2O7 gives mainly molecular H2S2O10 and H2SO4 and not ionic species. The conclusions reached from the interpretation of the Raman spectra of the D2SO4–SO3 system are similar to those arrived at for sulphuric acid oleums. The spectra of solutions of NaHSO4 in oleums were also examined, and are discussed.
