1,1,3-Trichloro-2,4,5,6-tetrahydro-1H-1λ4-benzo[b]tellurophene (a = 8.807(1), b = 14.495(2), c = 9.263(1) Å, β = 110.18(1)°; P21/a, Z= 4, R[F 2 > 2σ(F 2)] = 0.0383), prepared by reacting 1-ethynyl-1-cyclohexanol with tellurium tetrachloride, displays a hexagonal grid structure made of four-membered Te2Cl2 and 12-membered Te6Cl6 rings formed by self-assembly of Cl-Te-Cl rods through Te···Cl secondary bonds into a supramolecular 2D network. The comparison with structurally related compounds reveals that 2D layers can also be formed by similar self-assembly of eight-membered Te4I4 rings alone or in a combination of four-membered Te2I2 with eight-membered Te4I4 rings.Key words: diorganotellurium(IV), supramolecular 2D assembly, self-assembly, secondary bonding.

The phenoxy pendant isatins were observed to be highly potent inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase. In addition, the solid-state structure of a phenoxy pendant isatin showed an intriguing 1D-supramolecular self-assembled structure.

Complexation of cadmium(II) by the ditopic (bis-tridentate) thiocarbazone ligand 1,5-bis(6-methyl-2-pyridyl- methylene)thiocarbonohydrazide, H2L1, results in the self-assembly of a charge-neutral 2 × 2 molecular grid, [Cd4(L1)4], comprising four metals and four ligands in an interlocked cyclic array. The solid-state structure of this tetramer has been established by X-ray crystallography and in solution by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The presence of lower molecular weight oligomers was identified by both NMR and ESI-MS.

A new Cu(II) trimers, [Cu3(dcp)2(H2O)8]. 4DMF, with the ligand 3,5-pyrazoledicarboxylic acid monohydrate (H3dcp) has been prepared by solvent method. Its solid-state structure has been characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis (TGA and DSC), and single crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray crystallographic studies reveal that this complex has extended 1-D,2-D and 3-D supramolecular architectures directed by weak interactions (hydrogen bond and aromatic π-π stacking interaction) leading to a sandwich solid-state structure.

New bromine head-containing oxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines were synthesized. Owing to the bromine head and complementary V-shaped cavity, the solid state structure showed an intriguing and unique 1D-supramolecular chain-like self-assembly.

ABSTRACTDesigned synthesis and architectural assembly of head-to-tail polythiophene derivatives provide the ability to control π orbital topology and orbital interactions in conjugated polymers. The preparation of polythiophene derivatives with essentially 100% head-to tail (HT) couplings leads to defect free polythiophenes. These new HT polythiophenes can undergo macromolecular self-assembly to give self-oriented conducting polymers. Study of these materials has led to new insights on structure-property relationships in this class of Materials. In addition, these results show that the molecular orbital overlap, the band dimensionality, and the solid state structure are quite sensitive to the nature of the side chains attached to the polymer's backbone. In addition, we have now synthesized the first heteroatom functionalized HT polythiophenes. These polythiophene derivatives can bind cations, and ion recognition can be used to tune conjugation lengths and properties in polythiophenes. Also presented are a class of random HT coupled 3-alkylthiophenes whose optical and electrochemical properties and possibly electronic properties can be altered by recipe.

The paper describes the solid state structure of a compound of composition [Cu(bipy)3][Cu(bipy)(ala) (ClO4)2]ClO4, in which both the cation and anion are octahedral complex species with copper(II) as coordination center. The cation contains three chelate rings formed by bipy; the anion contains in the quatorial plane a CuONC2 chelate ring formed by the alaninato ligand and a CuN2C2 chelate ring formed by bipy, with two monodentate perchorato ligands in axial positions completing the six-coordination. In the crystal p-p stackings lead to a supramolecular self-assembled structure.
