X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to determine the oxidation state of gold deposited from an aqueous solution of AuCl4- on to various oxidized surfaces of silicon. Although the observed Au4f signal decreased with the thickness of the oxide layer, the oxidation state of Au was determined as 0 for all the samples analyzed. From the angular dependence of the Si2p and Au4f signals it was determined that Au is deposited on top of the oxidized surfaces of metallic silicon. It is postulated that from an aqueous solution of AuCl4-, gold would deposit in its zerovalent form on to any surface due to its large and positive electrochemical reduction potential (ε°red(Au3+ /Au) = +1.50 V) and the substrate plays a role only in providing active deposition sites. To further support the proposal, it is shown that the same process takes place even in inert and hydrophobic polypropylene substrates. Similarly, it is also shown that more gold deposits if the surface of the polypropylene is made less hydrophobic (but probably more active) via the industrially used corona discharge treatment.Key words: XPS, gold, electroless deposition, oxidized silicon surface.

ABSTRACTWe tried direct oxynitridation of silicon surfaces by remote-plasma-exited nitrogen and oxygen gaseous mixtures at 700°C in a high vacuum. The oxynitrided surfaces were investigated with in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With increase of the oxynitridation time, the surface density of nitrogen gradually increases, but that of oxygen shows nearly saturation behavior after the rapid increase in the initial stage. We also annealed the grown oxynitride and oxide films to investigate the role of the contained nitrogen. The desorption rate of oxygen from the oxynitride films is much less than that from oxide films. We confirmed that nitrogen stabilizes the thermal stability of these oxynitride films.

In this work, as-received HiPCO single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are incorporated in a controllable manner at various concentrations into Cu-SWCNT composites via electroless plating, by varying the related reaction times, with polyethylene glycol (PEG) used as a dispersing agent. The resultant samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for morphology assessment, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the assessment of crystal phase identification, and Raman spectroscopy for the confirmation of the presence of the incorporated SWCNTs. The Cu-SWCNT composites were found to contain carbon, catalytic iron (associated with the raw, as-received SWCNTs), oxygen, and copper; the latter was found to be inversely proportional to carbon and iron contents. The oxygen (associated with both the SWCNT defect sites and oxidized copper surfaces) remained more or less constant regardless of the proportion of SWCNTs in the composites. The Raman IG:ID ratio remains within the experimental error constant, indicating that the electroless deposition does not have a deleterious effect on the SWCNTs. At short deposition times, SEM revealed a relatively dense structure comprising a distinctive fibrous morphology, suggestive of an underlying SWCNT substrate coated with copper; however, with increasing deposition, a more porous morphology is observed. The size of the granular particles increases up until 10 min of reaction, after which time it remains unchanged.

This report presents the effect of synthesis conditions on the synthesis of graphene nanosheets via electrochemical exfoliation method for adsorbing methylene blue from aqueous solution. Oxygen-containing functional groups and defects in the material were characterized by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As a result, by using voltage of 15 V, (NH4)2SO4 (5%, 250 mL) and KOH (7.5%, 250 mL), the obtained material showed the highest MB adsorption capacity due to the high densities of oxygen-containing groups and defects comparison to other conditions.

ABSTRACTChemical bonding features and suboxide compositions in native oxide grown on chemically-cleaned hydrogen-terminated Si(100) surfaces stored in pure water have been studied by using surface sensitive infrared spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The LO phonon peak for the native oxide is located at 1210cm−1, which is shifted to a significantly lower wavenumber side than the ultrathin thermal oxide peak at 1250cm−1. This is because an appreciable amount of SiHx bonds are incorporated in the native oxide/Si interface and such hydrogen termination in the network dramatically reduces strained bonds in the interface. Very weak Si2+ suboxide signal from the oxide grown in pure water is also explained by the incorporated SiHx bonds which interrupt the Si2+ suboxide formation in the interface.

It is usually assumed that the oxidation state of the small proportion of Mn sometimes present in micas is +2, although there is evidence from electronic spectroscopy (Burns, 1970) for at least the occasional occurrence of Mn(III) in manganophyllite. We describe here X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) measurements on the Mn in a Norwegian lepidolite which was the subject of a concurrent structural study by X-ray photoelectron diffraction (Evans & Raftery, 1982). To establish the Mn oxidation state we have compared the Mn2p core-electron binding energies (BE), the Mn2P3/2-O ls BE differences, and the Mn2p XPS peak profiles from the four common oxides of manganese (MnO, Mn3O4, Mn2O3 and MnO2) with those from the lepidolite. A re-examination of these oxides was undertaken because the agreement between reports in the literature was unsatisfactory, and uncertainty existed concerning the integrity of some of the surfaces previously examined.

Maize straw biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron composite (MSB-nZVI) was prepared for efficient chromium (Cr) removal through alleviating the aggregation of zero-valent iron particles. The removal mechanism of MSB-nZVI was investigated by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution by MSB-nZVI was greatly affected by pH and initial concentration. The removal efficiency of Cr(VI) decreased with increasing pH, and the removal kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. XRD patterns of MSB-nZVI before and after reaction showed that reduction and precipitation/co-precipitation (FeCr2O4, Fe3O4, Fe2O3) occurred with the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and Fe(0) to Fe(II)/Fe(III). The produced precipitation/co-precipitation could be deposited on the MSB surface rather than being only coated on the surface of nZVI particles, which can alleviate passivation of nZVI. For remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated saline–alkali soil (pH 8.6–9.0, Cr 341 mg/kg), the released amount of Cr(VI) was 70.7 mg/kg, while it sharply decreased to 0.6–1.7 mg/kg at pH 4.0–8.0, indicating that the saline–alkali environment inhibited the remediation efficiency. These results show that MSB-nZVI can be used as an effective material for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution and contaminated soil.

Carbon nanotubes/alumina (CNTs/Al2O3) nanocomposites were prepared by the poly (dopamine) assisted chemical liquid phase deposition (CLPD). The poly (dopamine) layers were firstly coated on the CNTs surface uniformly by the self-oxidative polymerization of dopamine in mild aqueous solution and then the Al2O3 nanoparticles formed on the poly (dopamine) coated CNTs surface by the CLPD. The hydrophilic poly (dopamine) layers on the CNTs surface can improve the dispersion of CNTs in aqueous solution. Moreover, it can be used as a key linker between the CNTs and Al2O3 because of the nitrogen-containing group in poly (dopamine) could coordinate with Al3+ ions. The as-prepared poly (dopamine) coated CNTs and CNTs/Al2O3 nanohybrids were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-radial diffractometer (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). These results showed that the poly (dopamine) layers were coated on the surface of CNTs uniformly, and the Al2O3 nanoparticles embellished with the poly (dopamine) coated CNTs surface. Compared with pristine NR composites, the thermal conductivity of the as-prepared NR/CNTs@Al2O3 composites increased 17%.
