β-Glucuronidase activity in the homogenates of the mucosa of the small intestine is higher in the distal than in the proximal third of the intestine between the 4th and 17th postnatal day in rats. Activity falls proximally up to day 20, while distally, activity rises from birth up to day 15 and then falls rapidly up to day 20 (20×). Starting from day 20, activity is the same proximally and distally. β-Glucuronidase (expressed as changes of total activity per third of the small intestine) changes during the postnatal development very little in the proximal part; the greatest changes occur in the distal part.Adrenalectomy, performed on day 15, inhibits the normal decrease in activity seen in the distal part on day 19.

1. The carbohydrase activities of homogenates of mucosa from the abomasum, small intestine, caecum and colon, and of the pancreas of cattle were studied. 2. The disaccharidase activities were located mainly in the small intestine and showed a non-uniform pattern of distribution along the small intestine; trehalase activity was highest in the proximal part, lactase and cellobiase activities were highest in the proximal and middle parts and maltase activity was highest in the distal part. 3. The intestinal lactase and cellobiase activities were highest in the young calf and decreased with age, whereas the intestinal maltase and trehalase activities, which were very low compared with the lactase activity, did not change with age. 4. No intestinal sucrase or palatinase activity was detected in the calf or in the adult cow. 5. Homogenates of intestinal mucosa also exhibited amylase and dextranase activity. 6. Homogenates of the pancreas possessed a strong amylase activity and a weak maltase activity. The maltase activity did not change with age, whereas the amylase activity increased with age. 7. No marked differences were observed between the carbohydrase activities of calves fed solely on milk and those of calves given a concentrate–hay diet from 6 weeks of age.

AbstractThe Voirons Flysch (Caron in Eclogae Geologicae Helvetiae 69:297–308, 1976), is a flysch sequence aggregated into the sedimentary accretionary prism of the Chablais and Swiss Prealps. Its palaeogeographic location is still debated (South Piemont or Valais realm). We herein present a stratigraphic revision of the westernmost unit of the former Gurnigel Nappe sensu Caron (Eclogae Geologicae Helvetiae 69:297–308, 1976): the Voirons Flysch. This flysch is subdivided into three lithostratigraphic units at the formation level (the Voirons Sandstone, the Vouan Conglomerate, the Boëge Marl), with an additional unit (Bruant Sandstone) of uncertain attribution, ranging from the early Eocene to probably the late Eocene. We further propose a new model of the depositional setting of the deep-sea of the Voirons Flysch based on palaeocurrent directions, the overall geometry and sedimentary features. This model depicts an eastward deflected deep-sea fan. The stratigraphic record of the proximal part of this fan is fairly complete in the Voirons area, whereas its most distal part is only represented by one small exposure of thinly bedded sandstones in the Fenalet quarry. The stratigraphic evolution of the Voirons Flysch shows two major disruptions of the detrital sedimentation at the transition between Voirons Sandstone—Vouan Conglomerate and Vouan Conglomerate—Boëge Marl. The cause of these disturbances has to be constrained in the framework of the palaeogeographic location of the Voirons Flysch.

SummaryTwo groups of six sheep were fed either dried-grass or ground maize-based diets for at least 4 weeks before slaughter. Samples of the small intestinal mucosa and spancreatic tissue were assayed for a-amylase, glucoamylase, maltase and oligo-l,6-glucosidase.The pancreatic tissue contained high activities of α-amylase and much lower activities of glucoamylase, maltase and oligo-1,6-glucosidase. There was no effect of diet on the specific activities of any of these enzymes in the pancreatic tissue. The activity of α-amylase adsorbed on to the mucosa of the small intestine was greatest in the proximal region of the small intestine, the activity generally declining with increasing distance away from the pylorus. There was no diet effect on the absorbed α-amylase activity.Similar patterns of distribution along the small intestine were observed for maltase, glucoamylase and oligo-1,6-glucosidase with the highest activities in t he jejunum. There was no overall effect of diet on glucoamylase or maltase specific activities and glucoamylase total activity, although the total activities of maltase and oligo-1,6-glucosidase were significantly greater for the sheep fed the ground maize-based diet (P < 0·05).It is suggested that ruminant animals may be capable of digesting large amounts of starch in the small intestine through an adaptation in the activity of the host carbohydrases.

Background and aimsAppendiceal neoplasms are uncommon entities that are usually determined incidentally during the histopathological examination. Different techniques used for the macroscopic sampling of appendectomy material may affect the determinating neoplasms.Materials and methodsH&E-stained slides of 1280 cases who underwent appendectomy between 2013 and 2018 were reviewed retrospectively for histopathological features.ResultsNeoplasms were determined in 28 cases (3.09%); 1 lesion was observed in the proximal part of the appendix, 1 covering the entire length from proximal to distal and 26 in the distal part. In the 26 cases that observed in the distal part, the lesion was seen on both sides of the longitudinal section of the distal appendix in 20 cases, while it was seen on only one distal longitudinal section in the remaining 6 cases.ConclusionThe vast majority of appendiceal neoplasms are seen in the distal part of the appendix, and, in some cases, neoplasms might be seen on only one side of the distal section. Sampling only one-half of the distal part of the appendix, where tumours are most often observed, could result in some neoplasms being missed. Therefore, sampling the whole distal part would be more beneficial to determine small diameter tumours that do not create macroscopic findings.

Oxygen radicals derived from xanthine oxidase (XO) are important mediators of the cellular injury associated with reperfusion of ischemic intestine, stomach, liver, kidney, and pancreas. XO exists in nonischemic tissue predominantly as xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) and converts to oxygen radical-producing XO with ischemia. Grinding intestine under liquid nitrogen and placing the powder in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing thiol reductants and protease inhibitors adequately preserved total XDH + XO activity and the percentage in the oxidase form (%XO) for 24 h. Total activity in nonischemic intestine ranged from 374 nmol.min-1.g-1 in duodenum to 138 nmol.min-1.g-1 in ileum, while XO activity was approximately 19% of total activity throughout the entire small intestine. The rate of XDH conversion to XO during normothermic ischemia varied only slightly throughout the intestine, increasing 13% per hour to 34, 46, and 61% XO after 1, 2, and 3 h of ischemia, respectively. Our results contrast with previous reports where XDH conversion to XO occurred within 60 s ischemia but are consistent with physiological and morphological evidence of ischemic injury and provide further support for involvement of XO in intestinal injury associated with ischemia.

Strips from the proximal part of the smooth muscle segment of opossum esophagus have a significantly higher potassium content (50 +/- 3 meq/kg) than those from the distal part (38 +/- 3 meq/kg). There are no significant differences between the two regions in content of sodium (65 +/- 4 meq/kg in proximal, 71 +/- 3 meq/kg in distal) or chloride (48 +/- 10 meq/kg in proximal, 42 +/- 5 meq/ kg in distal). The mean [14C]inulin uptake is 240 +/- 10 ml/kg in both proximal and distal strips. [14C]polyethylene glycol uptake is smaller and [14C]sucrose and [14C]mannitol uptake in both areas are larger than that of inulin. Intracellular potassium concentration (based on the inulin uptake as an estimate of the extracellular space volume) is significantly higher proximally (71 +/- 3 mM) than distally (52 +/- mM). Ouabain, 10(-4) M, increases the intracellular concentration of sodium and decreases the intracellular concentration of potassium in both the proximal and distal segment. The efflux of 86Rb, measured by a washout technique, is higher in the distal than in the proximal smooth muscle segment. A difference in membrane permeability to rubidium and hence, potassium between proximal and distal smooth muscle segments may account in part for the different intracellular potassium concentrations.

The Malvin, Sullivan and Wilde ( The Physiologist 1: 58, 1957) stop flow technique for the localization of tubular function has been applied to a study of potassium and acid excretion in the dog. It has been observed that the urine is acidified in the distal part of the nephron at a site of avid sodium reabsorption. Potassium and ammonia are secreted in the same portion of the tubule. Diamox reduces acidification of the urine and secretion of ammonia and enhances the secretion of potassium. Phosphate is reabsorbed in the proximal part of the nephron in a region which is coextensive with that which secretes p-aminohippurate. All our data are consonant with the view that a mechanism located in the distal part of the nephron exchanges cellular hydrogen and/or potassium ions for sodium ions in the tubular urine. Ammonia diffuses into acid urine and is trapped as ammonium ion. Diamox, by interfering with the supply of cellular hydrogen ions, reduces exchange of hydrogen for sodium and favors the exchange of potassium for sodium.

Mouse tissues contain unusual basic isoelectric forms of α-L-fucosidase (with approximate isoelectric points of 8.3 and 9.0) in addition to the usual acidic and neutral forms previously described in tissues of other species. These unusual forms are very prominent in placenta and foetal tissues and comprise approx, 50-80% of total activity up to 11 days of postnatal development. By 15 days of postnatal development, the basic forms are diminished in amount and comprise not more than 25% of total activity. Neuraminidase treatment of adult mouse liver α-L-fucosidase led to significantly decreased amounts of acidic forms and increased amounts of the basic forms, suggesting that these forms are chemically related at least in part by sialic acid residues. Comparative kinetic studies on mouse liver, human liver and mouse placental α-L-fucosidases indicated that they have the same Km (0.05-0.06 mM) for 4-methylumbelliferyl α-L-fucopyranoside but different pH optima and thermostability properties. Mouse liver α-L-fucosidase has one pH optimum (5.5) and an acidic shoulder (centred around pH 4.0) compared with two distinct optima (4.3 and 6.8) for the human liver enzyme. Mouse placental α-L-fucosidase has a pH-activity curve comparable with that of the mouse liver enzyme except that the acidic shoulder is absent. Mouse liver α-L-fucosidase is considerably more thermolabile after preincubation at 50 degrees C than are the human liver and mouse placental enzymes, which gave similar thermodenaturation curves. Immunochemical studies indicated that mouse and human α-L-fucosidases are dissimilar antigenically but exhibit some cross-reactivity. The IgG fraction of antibody prepared in goat against human liver α-L-fucosidase was ineffective by itself in immunoprecipitating mouse liver α-L-fucosidase, but 63% and 72% of the mouse liver and placental enzymes respectively could be immunoprecipitated in the double-antibody experiments under conditions that immunoprecipitated 92% of the human liver enzyme.
