The effects of alternated cycles of full-sib and random mating on selection for pupa weight in Tribolium castaneum

Individual responses to selection for high pupal weight in Tribolium castaneum under two types of mating, cyclic full-sib random-mating system and random mating, were observed for 15 generations. No significant differences have been observed between the two types of mating for the selection response, differential selection, realized heritability, and the number of larvae per generation. Realized heritability of the pupal weight was 0.33 ± 0.02 and 0.42 ± 0.02 for the inbred lines and for the random-mated lines, respectively.Key words: inbreeding, pupa weight, Tribolium.

ABSTRACT The effects of population size and selection intensity on the mean response was examined after 14 generations of within full-sib family selection for postweaning gain in mice. Population sizes of 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 pair matings were each evaluated at selection intensities of 100% (control), 50% and 25% in a replicated experiment. Selection response per generation increased as selection intensity increased. Selection response and realized heritability tended to increase with increasing population size. Replicate variability in realized heritability was large at population sizes of 1, 2 and 4 pairs. Genetic drift was implicated as the primary factor causing the reduced response and lowered repeatability at the smaller population sizes. Lines with intended effective population sizes of 62 yielded larger selection responses per unit selection differential than lines with effective population sizes of 30 or less.

ABSTRACT A quantitative character controlled at one locus with two alleles was submitted to artificial (mass) selection and to three modes of opposing natural selection (directional selection, overdominance and underdominance) in a large random-mating population. The selection response and the limits of the selective process were studied by deterministic simulation. The lifetime of the process was generally between 20 and 100 generations and did not appear to depend on the mode of natural selection. However, depending on the values of the parameters (initial gene frequency, selection intensity, ratio of the effect of the gene to the environmental standard deviation, fitness values) the following outcomes of selection were observed: fixation of the allele favored by artificial selection, stable nontrivial equilibrium, unstable equilibrium and loss of the allele favored by artificial selection. Finally, the results of the simulation were compared to the results of selection experiments.

SUMMARYA line of mice, at its limit to selection for high body weight did not decline in performance over 11 generations of random mating, neither did it respond when selection was renewed. The experiment tested a method of improving body weight by a scheme which had earlier increased litter size under similar circumstances. The scheme was to derive partially inbred lines from the plateaued line, to select during inbreeding and, finally, to cross the best inbreds. Body weight was not increased, but the study allowed further examination of the residual genetic variance in the line.During inbreeding, the inbred lines became clearly differentiated in body weight, proving that loci controlling body weight had not become fixed. There was also a significant response to selection for a lower body weight during inbreeding. The pattern of results suggested the segregation of recessive genes, detrimental to high body weight but which selection had become inefficient at removing. A genetic model compatible with the results accommodated several such recessives, perhaps as many as 10, each with an effect of about two-thirds of a standard deviation (or some equivalent combination of gene number and effect), and at frequencies of around 0·2. Nevertheless, the total improvement in body weight to be gained by their elimination was only half a gram, or less than 2 %. Thus, substantial genetic effects can occur at individual loci despite trivially low heritabilities and negligible potential gains.

SUMMARYA subcellular dimension, the length of the spermatozoan midpiece, has been the subject of a two-way selection programme in mice. After thirteen generations of within-family selection the divergence between the selected lines amounted to 5·4 phenotypic standard deviations. The realized heritability was found to be 0·76 ± 0·02, dominance and commonenvironmental effects being apparently very small. The reality of the selection response was verified in measurements on live spermatozoa. Other measurements have shown that the change in the length of the midpiece has been independent of its width, and has occurred without a proportionate change in the length of the main-piece of the flagellum. An electron microscope study has shown that the selection has, in fact, brought about changes in the quantity of mitochondrial material in the sperm cells.

Simultaneous selection of two highly correlated traits was practiced in Tribolium castaneum in a replicated experiment for six generations. Two lines were selected in each of three replicates: P+A− for an antagonistic selection index to increase pupal weight at 21 days and decrease adult weight at 31 days, and P−A+ for an antagonistic selection index to decrease pupal weight and increase adult weight. Genetic correlation between pupal and adult weights estimated in the base population was 0.95. Estimates of realized heritabilities and genetic correlation were obtained and compared with full-sib estimates. For the aggregate genotype, the P+A− line had a significant positive selection response, while the P−A+ line showed a significant negative response as would be expected. The response to divergent selection was asymmetrical, being less for the low pupal weight and high adult weight line than vice versa. Less asymmetry was found for the realized heritability, which agreed very well with the index heritability estimated in the base population. Both individual traits changed in the same direction, increasing for the P+A− line and decreasing for P−A+ line, even though a significant response was found only for pupal weight in the P+A− line. Therefore, the response to antagonistic selection for each individual trait seems to be heavily controlled by the strength of the genetic correlation between them. The realized genetic correlation between pupal weight and adult weight obtained from antagonistic selection index was in excellent agreement with full-sib estimates. Realized heritabilities for each trait were overestimated, especially for adult weight, even though there were essentially no differences between realized and estimated values.Key words: selection (artificial), antagonistic index, parameters (realized), Tribolium.

SUMMARYThe effectiveness of selection for increased pupa weight in Tribolium was compared for three different selection systems. In all three systems the same number of breeding individuals was used each generation. Population L was a large random mating population with 24 males and 48 females selected each generation. The C4 and C8 populations were each divided into 6 subpopulations (lines) consisting of 4 males and 8 fem ales. Each of the three populations was replicated. In C4, selection for pupa weight was within lines for three generations, followed by a generation of among-line selection when the best two out of six lines were selected. These lines were then crossed to produce 6 new subpopulations, and the cycle was repeated. The C8 population was handled in exactly the same manner except that seven generations of selection within lines were practised before each generation of among-line selection. Selection response for the 42-generation period was significantly greater in the L population than in either subdivided population. No consistent differences among the selection systems were apparent when evaluating short-term response for the first 12 generations of the experiment. The results were interpreted as indicating that the influence of multiple-peak epistasis was not of major importance for this trait in determining ultimate response to selection when starting from a base population of previously unselected lines and utilizing a within- and among-line selection regime.

Responses to selection for high and low intrafamily coefficients of variation of pupa weight in Tribolium castaneum were observed for 10 generations. A significant decrease of the coefficient of variation has been observed in the replicated lines selected downwards while no response occurred in the other lines. Mean pupa weights did not change significantly throughout the experiment while mean fertility decreased in all lines, probably as a consequence of inbreeding depression. Realized heritability of the coefficient of variation of pupa weight was 0.15 ± 0.04 and 0.03 ± 0.01% for the downwards and upwards lines, respectively. These results show that the manipulation of the phenotypic variability by direct selection is possible.Key words: Tribolium, phenotypic variance, coefficient of variation of pupa weight.

Significant response to selection for budbreak number (NB) based on data recorded on 1-year-old shoots of young apple (Malus sylvestris (L.) Mill var. domestica (Borkh.) Mansf.) seedlings (Expt. I) and branches from adult seedling trees (Expt. II) has been demonstrated in clonally propagated seedling trees. Between family variation for NB was low and masked by year × family interaction effects. Realized heritability for NB was estimated as 40% to 60%. Correlated response in uniformity and position of budbreak, and in the number and length of side shoots, was found. Association between the time of budbreak (TB) and NB, according to midparent and cross groupings, and according to the parental means, indicate a positive genetic correlation between these traits. Where data on adult trees were used as a measure of selection response and tested on young clonal trees, significant response and genetic variation was shown, confirming the presence of utilizable genetic variance and that this procedure may be successfully applied as an early screening method for increased budbreak in adult trees. Combined selection utilizing genetic variance between crosses as well as within crosses is proposed as the best procedure to increase the frequency of seedlings with increased budbreak and to improve adaptation to low winter chilling conditions.

Responses to selection for high and low pupal weight in Tribolium castaneum under four different inbreeding systems and two different relative humidities (40 and 70%) were observed for seven generations. By the seventh generation, the coefficients of inbreeding ranged from 0.79 in the full sib lines to 0.12 in the control lines.Heritability of pupal weight estimated by mid-parent offspring regression from the base population was around 0.30 which is lower than the estimates obtained by Bell (1969). However, realized heritabilities were around 0.50. Significant progress was observed for both upward and downward selection. A linear response in pupal weight was observed for most of the selected lines, suggesting that the selection limit had not been reached.Inbreeding caused a reduction of approximately two offspring per 10% increment in the inbreeding coefficient.Asymmetric responses were noted in conjunction with the significant interaction of the degree of inbreeding and the direction of selection.
