Evidence for the multiplicity of alleles at Vrn1, the winter–spring habit locus in common wheat

Changes in the number of days to first emergence of the spike head with increasing duration of vernalization were examined in the common wheats (Triticum aestivum L.) 'Rescue,' 'Winalta,' 'Kharkov 22 MC,' and the disomic substitution lines of 'Winalta' and 'Kharkov 22 MC possessing the 5A chromosome from 'Rescue.' The data suggest the existence of three Vrn1 alleles in addition to the Vrn1 allele which occurs in 'Cadet.'Key words: vernalization, Triticum, Vrn alleles, chromosome 5A.

The common wheat genotypes under study showed a differentiated variability in terms of suscep-tibility to septoria, brown rust, spike fusariosis, which made it possible to differentiate them into clusters and identify those with higher resistance to these diseases. Based on the assessments from 2020-2021, the varieties Trubion, Numitor, Urbanus, Python, Miranda, Centurion, Amor, Aneta, Neven, Messino, Nasnaga, Tika-Taka, Judița, Avenue, Speranța, Dacia, Transilvania, Selania, Avânt which have shown resistance to extreme drought, fungal diseases and high indices of the spike productivity elements can be recommended as the initial material for the breeding programs.

A gene for resistance to Puccinia recondita, originally detected in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) accessions PI58548, PI268454, and PI268316, has been located on the long arm of chromosome 1B, 3.1 ± 1.2 crossover units from the centromere. In a cross between the backcross line RL6057 containing this new gene, now designated Lr33, and the backcross line RL6078 containing gene Lr26, gene Lr33 is closely linked to gene Lr26 (or the translocation breakpoint) with an estimated 2.6 ± 0.8 recombination value. RL6057 and RL6078 differ in gliadin bands that are controlled by genes on the short arm of chromosome 1B or 1R. The banding difference was completely associated with the presence or absence of Lr26. The common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Thatcher has resistance to many of the older races of stem rust (Puccinia graminis Pers. f. sp. tritici Eriks. & Henn.). Several genetic studies have shown that its resistance is complex in inheritance. To attempt to clarify the inheritance, 28 lines, each believed to carry a single resistance gene from Thatcher, were developed. The lines were tested with 13 races of stem rust. They fell into 13 types with resistance to from 1 to 11 races. Of the five genes previously identified in Thatcher, only two, Sr9g, and Sr12, were present in the lines. Four lines carried named genes, Sr6, Sr7a, Sr8a and S9d, which had not previously been detected in Thatcher. Thatcher is resistant to 8 of the 13 races. At least one line was resistant to each of the 13 races, including the five to which Thatcher is susceptible. Eleven of the 13 types of lines were resistant to race MCCD to which Thatcher is resistant. Seven of the types were resistant to race TMRT(15B-1) to which Thatcher is susceptible. Clearly, the inheritance of resistance in Thatcher is very complex and involves a considerable number of genes. It carries a surprising number of genes that appear to be hidden by the presence of suppressor genes or transposons.Key words: Common wheat, Triticum aestivum, Puccinia graminis, suppressors, tansposons

Various aneuploids of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Chinese Spring were used to study the dosage effect of group-5 chromosomes on spike morphology, size of floral organs, and grain weight. Reduced dosage resulted in smaller floral organs, smaller floret cavities, and lighter grains than in the euploid, while increased dosage had the opposite effects. Chromosome 5A was the most effective in inducing these changes, whereas in most cases 5B was the least effective. Based on the various lines studied, a high linear correlation was found between the weight of the basal grains in the central spikelets and the volume estimates of the florets in which they were developed. The different lines exhibited a considerable similarity between the size distribution of floral organs and the grain weight distribution in the main spike. Pleiotropic effects of genes located on group-5 chromosomes on size of floral organs and grain weight are suggested.Key words: Wheat, aneuploids, group-5 chromosomes.

The common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) experimental line Prelude/8* Marquis was determined to have a gene that inhibits the expression of gene Lr23 for seedling resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia recondita Rob. ex. Desm.) whereas the cultivar Prelude does not. This inhibitor had previously been reported in the cultivar Thatcher.
