Allometric relations of gonadal mass to shell height for the scallop Placopecten magellanicus from Baie des Chaleurs, Gulf of St. Lawrence, varied between maturing and fully mature individuals. We describe a technique for separating the two groups. We calculated gonosomatic indices for fully mature scallops and found that the three assumptions critical to body component indices, that (i) allometric relationships for the body component being studied and the reference component do not change over the size range of animals studied, (ii) slopes in the allometric growth equation for the studied and reference components are similar, and (iii) mass of the reference component does not change over time, were violated. We examined two alternative methods for calculating body component indices. The first applied a correction factor to the gonosomatic index and the second directly scaled the component studied to maximum shell height. We recommend the latter. We identified spawning (drops in gonadal mass) between successive dates using a modified Jonckheere rank test, which is appropriate for time-series data.

Juvenile scallops (shell height 4–35 mm) were stimulated to swim in an aquarium using a whelk, and their swimming was recorded and analyzed using a videocassette recorder. Scallops ascended in the water column in straight, spiral, or twisting patterns, and the majority never swam horizontally. Two types of swimming were observed. Stable swimming, with a consistent body angle (the angle that the scallop makes with the horizon), was recorded over the size range of scallops examined. In stepwise swimming, the body angle alternated between steep (98 ± 13 (SD)) and more horizontal angles (51 ± 9°). Stepwise swimming was observed among the smaller (mean ± SD = 8 ± 3 mm) scallops. Maximum and mean velocities were positively correlated with both shell height and temperature. Clap rate (Cr) increased with increasing temperature (Cr = 0.29T (°C) + 1.3). Body angle expressed a significant relationship with shell height. Below 10 mm shell height the mean angle was 82°; between 30 and 35 mm the mean angle was 38°.

The increase in the prevalence of obesity in recent years has prompted research into alternative methods of modulating body weight and body fat. The last decade has reflected this with a surge in studies investigating the potential of green tea as a natural agent of weight loss, with a view to confirming and elucidating the mechanisms underlying its effect on the body. Currently, it is widely believed that the polyphenolic components present in green tea have an anti-obesogenic effect on fat homeostasis, by increasing thermogenesis or reducing fat absorption among other ways. The data published to date, however, are inconsistent, with numerous putative modes of action suggested therein. While several unimodal mechanisms have been postulated, a more plausible explanation of the observed results might involve a multimodal approach. Such a mechanism is suggested here, involving simultaneous inhibition of the enzymes catechol-O-methyltransferase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthase and impeding absorption of fat via the gut. An evaluation of the available evidence supports a role of green tea in weight loss; however the extent of the effects obtained is still subject to debate, and requires more objective quantification in future research.

Hemoglobin is the red pigment-protein contained in red blood cells. The function of hemoglobin is to transport oxygen from the lungs and in the bloodstream to be carried to the tissues. Hemoglobin can increase by increasing the intake of iron in the body. One way to increase hemoglobin can be done by giving method Infused Water Dates. Infused water is a drink consisting of plain water with fresh fruit added and soaking or settling together for a certain time. The making of infused water is carried out by soaking for a period of 0 to 12 hours, so that the infused water becomes a liquid medium that carries more nutrients than ordinary water and will be more easily absorbed by cells and distributed throughout the body (Sidauruk, 2018 ). In several studies, it is stated that dates can increase hemoglobin levels in the blood. Where dates contain iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, protein to form red blood cells. With the method, Infused Water the date palm water becomes alkaline so that it can accelerate the absorption process in the body. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of dates infused water provision to increase hemoglobin levels of midwifery adolescent girls at Medan Health Polytechnic in 2020. This research was quasi-experimental study using the One Group Pretest-Posttest Without Control Design approach. The sample in this study were 20 respondents of midwifery adolescent girls from Medan Health Polytechnic, using the technique of purposive sampling. The statistical test used wa the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test because the data was not normal. The results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test obtained the value of P-Value = 0.001. So it can be concluded that the date infused water  is effective in increasing hemoglobin levels of midwifery adolescent girls at Medan Health Polytechnic in 2020.   Keywords: Dates Infused Water, Increased Hemoglobin Levels, Girls Adolescent

A study of the growth of the sea scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, under suspended culture conditions was carried out over a seven month period at a culture site in Graves Shoal, Mahone Bay,Nova Scotia – Canada. Scallop spat were cultivated in pearl nets at a density of 30-35 per net set at four locations corresponding to the surface (7 m) and bottom (14 m) at the outer edge and the center of the site. Shell height was measured at monthly intervals. Environmental conditions represented as temperature and food availability at the surface and bottom over the same period were also monitored. Shell Height growth rate was slightly greater at the surface than at the bottom. At the surface sites growth was greater at the outside (SUROUT) than at the center locations, but at the bottom growth was greater at the centre location (BOTIN). The only significant relationship between shell growth and temperature - food variables was chlorophyll a concentration.  Key words: temperature, food availability, shell height, sea scallop

Abstract Background Estimates of the incidence and prognosis of developing liver metastases at the pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) diagnosis are lacking. Methods In this study, we analyzed the association of liver metastases and the PDAC patients outcome. The risk factors associated with liver metastases in PDAC patients were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression analysis. The overall survival (OS) was estimated using Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank test. Cox regression was performed to identify factors associated with OS.Results Patients with primary PDAC in the tail of the pancreas had a higher incidence of liver metastases (62.2%) than those with PDAC in the head (28.6%). Female gender, younger age, primary PDAC in the body or tail of the pancreas, and larger primary PDAC tumor size were positively associated with the occurrence of liver metastases. The median survival of patients with liver metastases was significantly shorter than that of patients without liver metastases. Older age, unmarried status, primary PDAC in the tail of the pancreas, and tumor size ≥4 cm were risk factors for OS in the liver metastases cohort. Conclusions Population-based estimates of the incidence and prognosis of PDAC with liver metastases may help decide whether diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging should be performed in patients with primary PDAC in the tail or body of the pancreas. The location of primary PDAC should be considered during the diagnosis and treatment of primary PDAC.
