This report presents the results of an economic survey of the herring fishery of Charlotte County, New Brunswick, conducted in 1957 and 1958. It contains: (a) a detailed account of the capital investment and income position of the fishermen who were engaged in the herring fishery during the years 1956 and 1957; (b) some evaluation of the economic effects which the construction of hydro-electric power dams in Passamaquoddy Bay would have on the herring fishery of the area.Except for a small complement of men employed on purse seiners, draggers and a few other modernized fishing craft, the fishing activity of Charlotte County fishermen is largely confined to inshore operations. As a result, the primary fishing industry is not highly capitalized. Average net incomes are also low compared with those prevailing in other industries, even with those derived from a number of fisheries elsewhere in the Maritime Provinces. Incomes from the weir fishery are particularly uncertain, in view of the wide fluctuation in yearly catches and the high, rigid operating costs. In contrast with weir fishing, purse seining has proven to be an efficient method of fishing in the region, and holds considerable promise for the improvement of earnings in the herring fishery.It is expected that the construction of the proposed power dams would add to the cost of maintaining and operating weirs in Passamaquoddy Bay, thereby reducing returns to owners and fishermen in this segment of the industry. In view of the low earnings now derived from weir fishing in certain sections of the area, it is likely that a number of weir owners would not continue to maintain their weir investments if the power dams were built.

Abstract Every business can benefit from reduction of its losses due to corrosion. Awareness of all possible sources of such losses is essential. Unnecessary acceptance of losses is common from chronic corrosion which is tolerated as established custom, and from hidden or indirect effects of corrosion. The importance of corrosion damage is not always proportional to the volume of metal affected. The functional aspects of corrosion are listed. Analysis is made of the ways in which corrosion enters into the cost of doing business. Explanations are given of the direct and indirect ways corrosion may effect capital investment, operating costs, product sales, maintenance costs, overhead costs and market competitive condition of and company.

This paper looks at the cost of navigation and endeavours to establish a relationship, of the type studied by Professor H. Benford, between manning and its associated cost in British shipping. Certain assumptions are made concerning the capital investment and operating costs for navigation equipment and from these the progressive savings are estimated for minimum manning and an unmanned bridge. Captain McKenzie is Managing Director of Marine and General Computer Consultancy (I.O.M.) Ltd.After some considerable investigation into the costs of marine equipment and accommodation it has been found that there is the greatest difficulty in establishing a base cost on which to examine possible reductions. Equipment, salaries, accommodation and fringe benefits vary so much from company to company and ship to ship that any comparison is meaningless. Thus we must consider some hypothetical ‘standard ship’ and define fairly closely what equipment is already on board and the average salary for staff or crew members. It seems reasonable to look at a modern ship equipped with all the devices which an up-to-date shipowner considers necessary for her operation and—more important—her safety.

The equipment technology to incinerate and in turn recover energy from industrial wastes is reasonably well documented via the manufacturers of the equipment involved. The difficult question for the industrial plant manager is whether the capital investment and operating costs are economically justified. This paper will review the styles of incineration and heat recovery systems which are typically applied to industrial wastes – solids, liquids, and gases – and then assess the quantity and type of waste materials which are needed to make the cost of installing that equipment economically justified.

In this study a new multi-generation system which generates power (electricity), thermal energy (heating and cooling) and ash for agricultural needs has been developed and analysed. The system consists of a Biomass Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (BIGCC) and an absorption chiller system. The system generates about 3.4 MW electricity, 4.9 MW of heat, 88 kW of cooling and 90 kg/h of ash. The multi-generation system has been modelled using Cycle Tempo and EES. Energy, exergy and exergoeconomic analysis of this system had been conducted and exergy costs have been calculated. The exergoeconomic study shows that gasifier, combustor, and Heat Recovery Steam Generator are the main components where the total cost rates are the highest. Exergoeconomic variables such as relative cost difference (r) and exergoeconomic factor (f) have also been calculated. Exergoeconomic factor of evaporator, combustor and condenser are 1.3%, 0.7% and 0.9%, respectively, which is considered very low, indicates that the capital cost rates are much lower than the exergy destruction cost rates. It implies that the improvement of these components could be achieved by increasing the capital investment. The exergy cost of electricity produced in the gas turbine and steam turbine is 0.1050 £/kWh and 0.1627 £/kWh, respectively. The cost of ash is 0.0031 £/kg. In some Asian countries, such as Indonesia, ash could be used as fertilizer for agriculture. Heat exergy cost is 0.0619 £/kWh for gasifier and 0.3972 £/kWh for condenser in the BIGCC system. In the AC system, the exergy cost of the heat in the condenser and absorber is about 0.2956 £/kWh and 0.5636 £/kWh, respectively. The exergy cost of cooling in the AC system is 0.4706 £/kWh. This study shows that exergoeconomic analysis is powerful tool for assessing the costs of products.

Wage disparities research hardly incorporate for the cost of living differences due to data restriction, while the wage disparity issue is the crucial area of economist interest. The study aims to examine the wage disparities between high and low wage cities for Punjab and Sindh province of Pakistan with and without the cost of living, deploying the data of Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement Survey (PSLM) with Household Integrated Economic Survey (HIES) for 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2013. Applying the Oaxaca-Blinder estimation method, the findings infer that wage dispersion is high without the cost of living model for both provinces (Punjab and Sindh) as compared to with cost of the living model. Moreover, the results reveal that the wage dispersion is greater in Punjab province than Sindh province. For policymakers, our study suggests that the cost of living is an essential component of the wage dispersion in Pakistan’s cities; it should be considered while formulating for wage policy.

Of many techniques that are used to optimize production and costs, the studies conducted within a profile company lead to our choice for testing the 6Sigma method (the most used method in the automotive industry) in view of the economic efficiency applied in the wood Industry company. This method measures how many flaws exist in a process and determines in a systematic way how to improve it by technical overhauling and eliminating or minimizing the process for efficiency. This research article aims to study the state of research on the optimization of the production process through technical overhauling for panels reconstituted from solid wood and ways to make production more efficient by cutting costs through technical overhauling. From preliminary research, we estimate that all the items founded and others that will result from further research will result in a significant decrease in production costs that are reflected in the cost of the finished product and consequently in increasing the yield of the company by maximizing its profit. At the same time it may be the basis of future research studies in the field. The easier it is to maximize profits, the lower the operating costs are and the higher recovery rate of investments are, that will result a change in the operating mode: “working smarter not harder”.

Most of the herring taken in the Passamaquoddy area of southern New Brunswick are caught in stationary weirs built close to shore. Analyses of weir catches show no significant relationships between average catches inside Passamaquoddy Bay and catches in outside areas for the same year. Weirs inside Passamaquoddy Bay are more efficient and catch about twice as many herring per weir as those outside the Bay.Seasonal and annual variations both in individual weir catches and in total catches in the various statistical districts of Charlotte County are far greater now than any changes that can be forecast as resulting from the installation of the proposed Passamaquoddy tidal power dams.

As part of a larger project to revise the systematics of lower Westphalian floras of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the sphenopsid taxa are presently reviewed. We recognize 15 species, of which one, Annularia stopesiae, is new. Detailed synonymy lists allow a refinement of the stratigraphic and geographic ranges of these species. Scant attention has been paid previously to Canadian species in the European literature. For example, Annularia latifolia was described later from Europe as Annularia jongmansii. The identical composition of Westphalian floras from Canada and western Europe is striking.

In June 1997, butternut canker was found for the first time in New Brunswick, Canada, at Stickney, Carleton County. A fungal isolate recovered from a young branch canker on butternut (Juglans cinerea L.), cultured on potato dextrose agar, produced spores and cultural morphology as previously described (1). This strain was retained as FSC-758 in the Fredericton Stock Culture Collection at the Atlantic Forestry Centre. The disease was also detected at four other locations in Carleton County along the Saint John River watershed within 20 km of the State of Maine. One stem canker examined at Peel, Carleton County, suggests the disease has been present at this site in New Brunswick for at least 7 years. The butternut tree is at the northeastern edge of its natural range in New Brunswick and, prior to the pathogen's detection, was believed to be far enough from infected butternut in the northeastern United States, Ontario, and Quebec to escape infection. Because planted specimens of butternut exist outside the tree's natural range in New Brunswick and in the neighboring provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, efforts are underway to determine how far the fungus has spread in the Maritime Provinces.
