Influence of origin on migration and survival of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the Bay of Fundy, Canada

Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) smolts of wild and hatchery origins (n = 522) were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and monitored at successive arrays of submerged receivers during migration from five watersheds in three regions of the Bay of Fundy (BoF), Canada. Two of the regions had endangered inner BoF salmon populations. Migration success of postsmolts leaving the BoF varied widely among 13 groups monitored (3%−70%) and was influenced by behaviour and passage time. Region of origin was the key variable in habitat-specific survival models selected using the Akaike information criterion. Rearing origin, migration and release timing, and smolt size were important variables in some habitats. Estimated survival rates (overall and habitat specific) differed markedly among salmon populations of different regions. Mediocre estuarine survival of smolts (0.54) from the outer BoF region affected overall survival (0.66). Poor survival (0.21) in coastal areas of the distant inner BoF region and mediocre survival in other habitats resulted in low overall survival (0.06) that severely limited the potential for population recovery. Potential predators were abundant in habitats where survival was lowest. High survival of salmon from the intermediate inner BoF region in all habitats (0.81–0.93) was not responsible for their failure to return.

Smolt production at different egg deposition densities is estimated from data on survival rates and space requirements of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) reported in the literature. Average maximum production of smolts is estimated to be approximately 5/100 m2 for 2+ smolts, 2/100 m2 for 3+ smolts, and 1/100 m2 for 4+ smolts. Minimum egg depositions recommended for production of these numbers of smolts are 220/100 m2, 165–220/100 m2, and 80/100 m2 for each age of smolts, respectively. The escapement of adults required to produce these depositions must be estimated from observed average weights of returning females and a reported fecundity of Atlantic salmon between 1650 and 1760 eggs/kg of female. With the exception of Ungava rivers, average smolt age in any particular river can be estimated from the number of days per year on which water temperature reaches or exceeds 7 °C. Abstract The migration dynamics and inter-annual variation in early at-sea survival of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts over 14 years of study are reported for four river populations located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Canada). Acoustically tagged smolts were monitored at three points along their migration from freshwater to the Labrador Sea, a migration extending more than 800 km at sea and a period of 2 months. A hierarchical state-space version of the Cormack–Jolly–Seber model was used to estimate apparent survival rates from incomplete acoustic detections at key points. There was a positive size-dependent probability of survival through the freshwater and estuary areas; the odds of survival of a 16 cm smolt were 1.5–1.7 times higher than for a 13.5 cm smolt, length at tagging. Length adjusted (centred to the mean fork length of smolts during the study of 14.6 cm) survivals through the estuary and nearshore waters were estimated to range between 67 and 90% for the two river populations migrating through Chaleur Bay in contrast to lower survival estimates of 28–82% for the two populations from the neighbouring Miramichi Bay. Across the 14 years of study, survival estimates varied without trend for the populations of Chaleur Bay, but declined for the populations migrating through Miramichi Bay. Survival through the Gulf of St. Lawrence was variable but generally high among years and rivers, ranging from 96% day−1 to 99% day−1. Long term, replicated studies at multiple sites using acoustically tagged smolts can provide empirical data to examine hypotheses of the location and timing of factors contributing to smolt and post-smolt mortality of salmon at sea.

The occurrence of Caligus elongatus on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) cultured in marine waters in the Passamaquoddy Bay region of the lower Bay of Fundy is reported. Two size classes of cultured salmon (smolts and market size) were examined. Prevalence of C. elongatus was 54.5% on market fish and 54.7% on smolts. Intensities of infection for market fish and smolts were recorded as 2.41 and 2.58, respectively. Overall sex ratio of adult C. elongatus on infected salmon was 1:1.4 females to males; mean number of eggs per gravid female C. elongatus was 169.

Abstract Since 1985, the dynamics of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) population in the River Oir, a spawning tributary of the River Sélune (Lower Normandy, France), have been studied from a data set of parr density and the number and the age structure of migrating fish (smolts and adults). Parr densities (1.5–17.4 per 100 m2) and smolt production (0.25–9.2 per 100 m2) varied considerably from year to year. Migrating juveniles were mainly 1 year old. Abundance of parr and smolts was strongly correlated with 0+ densities. Egg-to-smolt survival rates were highly variable year on year (0.044–1.07%). During the juvenile freshwater phase, mortality was highest between the egg and the 0+ stage (97.5–99.9%). The fluctuations in abundance of juvenile salmon appear to be linked to the number and distribution of spawners within the stream during spawning, and also to the amount of silt deposition on the spawning beds. As a result, mortality was highest during the under-gravel phase, and the mean survival rate from egg to smolt was much lower than in rivers less impacted by human activities. Therefore, during the study period, the low production of smolts during some years might lead to a low renewal rate of the salmon population.

Migration rates, delay, timing, and success of acoustic-tagged Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) presmolts (n = 120) and smolts (n = 57) are reported as they moved through the large Mactaquac Generating Station (MGS) reservoir and subsequently the lower Saint John River (SJR). The potential relationship between fish movements and the MGS operations was examined directly and via a hydrodynamic model. Migration rates were 15.4–29.3 km·day−1 within the river sections and 5.0–13.3 km·day−1 through the reservoir, a significant reduction of 32%–57%. Migratory timing was temporally mismatched with dam operations such that only a few (n = 3) smolts had the option of dam passage via spill. Migration success estimated as apparent survival was high through the reservoir (81%–100%), declined by 8%–32% during passage at the MGS, and additional losses (27%–55%) occurred during the migration to the lower SJR, such that overall survival to the estuary for the groups tagged as autumn presmolts was 61%–65%, and survival for those tagged as spring smolts was 6%–10%.

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) postsmolts surveyed by surface trawling in the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine during 2001–2003 were aggregated in several areas in the Bay of Fundy and dispersed over a broader area in the Gulf of Maine. Postsmolt distribution reflected the major surface-current vectors and was independent of origin (wild vs. hatchery, inner vs. outer Bay of Fundy). Migration proceeded without disruption, and marked wild postsmolts from both the inner and outer Bay of Fundy were recaptured in the outer Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine, where their distribution overlapped the commercial fishery for Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus). Marked postsmolts of wild origin were recaptured more frequently than those of hatchery origin but the overall density was low, and no schools of postsmolts were encountered that could offer protection from predators. Temperature and salinity in postsmolt habitat were favourable for growth and survival. Postsmolts were in excellent condition and had no bacterial or viral pathogens or salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis). They were feeding on pelagic prey (amphipods, euphausiids, and fish larvae) and the period of accelerated marine growth had started, indicating that environmental conditions and food supply were not limiting growth and survival.

The recent development of molecular genetic markers and methods of inferring relatedness among individuals using multilocus genotype information has allowed new insight into mating systems in the wild. Capitalising on the recently discovered linkage between the microsatellite locus Ssa202 and the sex-determining region of the Atlantic salmon Y chromosome, we developed a novel method to infer the sex of unsampled, wild-spawning parents of some of the few remaining wild, inner Bay of Fundy Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ). We inferred that most of the unsampled, reconstructed parents at the half-sib group level were likely polygamous females, while the parents at the full-sib group level (nested within half-sib groups) were likely monogamous males. Given the very low numbers of anadromous salmon returning to inner Bay of Fundy rivers to spawn, the putative male parents were likely mature male parr rather than anadromous males. This suggests that salmonid populations experiencing extreme declines may be composed of a high proportion of related individuals from relatively few sib groups and that mature male parr may provide an important genetic and demographic buffer to population decline.

Inner Bay of Fundy Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are endangered anadromous fish that have the potential to provide marine-derived nutrients (MDNs) to freshwater ecosystems depending on their population abundance. Salmon have been reintroduced to the Upper Salmon River, but not the adjacent Point Wolfe River, in Fundy National Park, New Brunswick, Canada. This study determined whether stocking of adult salmon increased the productivity of the river. To examine the incorporation of MDNs, biofilm, leaf litter, Perlidae, Heptageniidae and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were sampled pre- and post-spawning in 2015-2017 from down- and up-stream of a natural barrier in both rivers and analyzed for carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes. After salmon spawning in each year, all organisms at the downstream site of the stocked river increased in δ13C and δ15N, with the greatest enrichment in brook trout (δ13C -23.97 to -21.10‰, δ15N +6.36 to +10.73‰). The proportion of MDNs in brook trout after salmon spawning (2015: 23.4%, 2016: 40.7%, 2017: 37.4%) also increased with higher numbers of released adult salmon. Results support the importance of salmon restoration for increasing the proportion of MDNs and productivity in rivers in Atlantic Canada.

Studies of naturally produced Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts, marked from 1950 to 1961 on tributaries of the Miramichi River by differential finclipping, indicated that commercial fisheries accounted for over 60% of their total utilization as adults. The bulk of commercial recoveries was about equally divided among Newfoundland traps, Miramichi drift nets, and Miramichi trapnets; the remainder came from various commercial catches in the Maritime Provinces and Quebec. The percentages of grilse (1 sea-year fish) in commercial catches were low, 20% for Northwest Miramichi and 17% for Southwest Miramichi fish.Anglers reported 10 and 7%, respectively, of all the recaptures of Northwest and Southwest fish. All these angling recoveries were made in freshwater sections of the Miramichi River. Grilse comprised over 70% of angling recaptures.Spawning escapement accounted for 25% of the Northwest returns, of which 60% were grilse; and 19% of the Southwest returns, of which 85% were grilse.For the total of 174,509 smolts marked on the Northwest Miramichi the minimum survival rate to fisheries and spawning escapement was 2.7%. For 78,117 Southwest smolts, the corresponding value was 2.0%. These survival rates, except for the Newfoundland commercial catches, were not adjusted for completeness of search and other factors.The average ratio of grilse to larger salmon in the adult recoveries, about 0.6:1, was much lower than in more recent smolt-tagging experiments by another worker (about 2:1) and indicated a considerable increase in the ratio for Miramichi stock between 1950 and 1968.
