A new and typically Jurassic ichthyosaur from the Upper Triassic of British Columbia

A new ichthyosaur species is described from the Upper Triassic (middle Norian) of Williston Lake, northeastern British Columbia. Aside from the foramen enclosed between the radius and ulna–a characteristic of Triassic ichthyosaurs–the new specimen is typical of Lower Jurassic forms. Indeed, if the specimen had been collected from the English lower Liassic, there would have been no hesitation in referring it to the common English genus Ichthyosaurus, a taxonomic course I follow here. Referring the new species to Ichthyosaurus extends the geological range of the genus by approximately 9 Ma, to the middle Norian. Ichthyosaurus janiceps sp. nov. has an abbreviated snout, like that of Ichthyosaurus breviceps, but it is a much larger species, and has a distinctly different forefin.

New ichthyosaur material is reported from an Upper Triassic locality on Williston Lake, northeastern British Columbia. The paucity of ichthyosaurs from the Triassic of North America make this a potentially important site. An isolated forefin is described, which is unlike that of any Triassic species from North America but which compares closely with certain Lower Jurassic species from England and Germany. The new material suggests that the transition in the ichthyosaurian fauna at the close of the Triassic may have been less abrupt than was previously supposed.

Checking some North American genera of bark-beetles I found a series of Alniphagus Sw. which does not agree with the common species Alniphagus aspericollis from California and British Columbia and doubtless represents a new species. The genus therefore comprises now three distinct species, Alniphagus alni Nijs. from Japan and the Far East, A. aspericollis from British Columbia down to California and the new species A. hirsutus from Alnus sitchensis in B.C.

New nassellarian radiolarians are described from the Insular and Intermontane belts of the Canadian Cordillera in British Columbia. Two new genera (Atalanta n.gen. and Nitrader n.gen.) and three new species (Atalanta emmela n.gen., n.sp., Atalanta epaphrodita n.gen., n.sp., and Nitrader montegufonensis n.gen., n.sp.) were found in Lower Jurassic carbonate concretions of the Sandilands Formation of the Queen Charlotte Islands and in a chert pebble extracted from a Cretaceous conglomerate of the Intermontane Belt possibly correlative with the Spences Bridge Group. The discovery of new taxa within two distinct belts of the Canadian Cordillera stresses their biostratigraphic significance.

The Takla Group of north-central British Columbia as originally defined contained volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Late Triassic and Jurassic ages. As redefined herein, it consists of three formations in the McConnell Creek map-area. Lowest is the Dewar Formation, composed of argillite and volcanic sandstone that is largely the distal equivalent of basic flows and coarse volcaniclastic rocks of the Savage Mountain Formation. These formations are overlain by the volcaniclastic, basic to intermediate Moosevale Formation. These rocks are Upper Triassic (upper Karnian and lower Norian). They are unconformably overlain by Lower Jurassic rocks of the Hazelton Group.

Massive Upper Triassic (Norian) reef limestone at Eaglenest Mountain, Takla Group, British Columbia, contains a wide variety of shallow-water fossils in two different carbonate units. A sponge-coral facies contains the spongesFanthalamia astoma(Seilacher, 1962),Fanthalamia multicanalisnew species,Cinnabaria expansa(Seilacher, 1962), andCinnabaria? sp.Cinnabaria expansais a widely distributed North American terrane species which, along withF. astoma,was previously known from the Luning Formation of Nevada. Also included is the “disjectoporoid,”Pamiropora sonorensisStanley, 1994, and a massive spongiomorph,Spongiomorpha tenuisSmith, 1927, previously endemic to the Eastern Klamath terrane of California. Colonial corals include:Retiophyllia quesneliananew species,Chondrocoenia waltheri(Frech, 1890),Crassistellacf.juvavica(Frech, 1890),Distichomeandracf.austriaca(Frech, 1890), andAlpinophyllia flexuosaRoniewicz, 1989. A limestone conglomerate overlying these beds is dominated almost exclusively by the planktonic hydrozoan,Heterastridium conglobatumReuss, 1865. A problematic taxonLovceniporacf.chaetetiformisVinassa de Regny, 1915, is reported for the first time outside Timor and the Tethys. The faunas provide a first glimpse into the reef biota of the Quesnel terrane. They contain taxa previously known from the distant Tethys but also include endemics from other inboard terranes.

A small, nearly complete ichthyosaur skeleton is described from the Upper Triassic of Williston Lake, in northeastern British Columbia. The age of the material, based on conodonts, is early Norian. Although the length of the entire skeleton would probably not have exceeded 1 m, there is no evidence of immaturity–quite the contrary. Named Hudsonelpidia brevirostris, the new taxon shares some features with Triassic taxa, as exemplified by Mixosaurus from the European Middle Triassic, and with post-Triassic ichthyosaurs like Ichthyosaurus, from the English Lower Jurassic. Mixosaurian characters include an elongate tibia with emarginated pre- and postaxial margins, and phalanges in the hindfin with pre- and postaxial notches. Like Ichthyosaurus, the humérus is elongate rather than broad, so too is the pubis and ischium. Mixosaurus is unusual among Triassic ichthyosaurs for having a relatively large orbit, but the orbit is even more prominent in Hudsonelpidia, probably because of the shortness of the snout. Hudsonelpidia has an unusually large femur that approaches the length of the humérus, dwarfing the rest of the hindfin. The rostrum is unique in being perforated by foramina, but this could possibly be an abnormality.

Ptychopteridae is an ancient and rather diverse nematoceran family with three extant and 12 fossil genera subdivided into 80 extinct species belonging to five subfamilies (Eskov & Lukashevich, 2015; Lukashevich, 2019, 2020; Liu & Huang, 2020). Several undescribed ptychopterid larvae from the Upper Triassic of Germany represent the oldest record of the family (Barth et al., 2011). Crenoptychoptera Kalugina, 1985, an extinct genus belonging to the subfamily Eoptychopterinae Handlirsch, 1906, includes seven described species. All these species were recorded from the Lower Jurassic to the Lower Cretaceous of Eurasia: C. dobbertinensis Ansorge, 1998 from the Lower Jurassic of the Former Clay in Germany (Lukashevich et al., 1998), C. conspecta Lukashevich, 1995 from the Lower Jurassic of Ust-Baley in Russia (Lukashevich, 1995), the type species C. antica Kalugina, 1985 and C. defossa Kalugina, 1985 from the Middle Jurassic of the Kubekovo in Russia (Kalugina & Kovalev, 1985), C. bavarica Krzemiński & Ansorge, 1995 from the Upper Jurassic of Wegscheid in Germany (Krzemiński & Ansorge, 1995), C. liturata Lukashevich, 2011 from Upper Jurassic of Shar Teg in Mongolia, and C. gronskayae Kalugina, 1989 from the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous of Kempendyay in Russia (Kalugina, 1989; Lukashevich, 2011). Three species discovered from the Daohugou beds of China have been assigned to Crenoptychoptera (Hao et al., 2009), but a following study suggested that they should be placed in Axymyiidae (Zhang, 2010).

The highly deformed section at Open Bay is one of the few good exposures of a thick sedimentary unit within the prebatholithic rocks along coastal British Columbia. It provides new structural information relating to emplacement of a part of the Coast Range batholith and it contains an important Upper Triassic fauna unusually well represented. Structural and paleontological analyses are mutually supporting and are purposely combined in one paper.Thirteen ammonite genera from 14 localities clearly substantiate McLearn's tentative assignment to the Tropites subbullatus zone (Upper Karnian) and suggest a restriction to the T. dilleri subzone as defined in northern California.Contrary to an earlier view, the beds are lithologically similar across the whole bay except for variations in the intensity of deformation and thermal alteration. Their contact with slightly older relatively undeformed flows is apparently a zone of dislocation. Stratigraphic thicknesses cannot be measured with confidence, and subdivision into "Marble Bay Formation" and "Open Bay Group" cannot be accepted. Open Bay Formation is redefined to include all the folded marble and interbedded pillow lava at Open Bay. Lithologic and biostratigraphic correlation is suggested with the lower middle part of the Quatsino Formation on Iron River, 24 miles to the southwest. Basalt flows and pillowed volcanics west of Open Bay are correlated with the Texada Formation within the Karmutsen Group.The predominant folding is shown to precede, accompany, and follow intrusion of numerous andesitic pods and to precede emplacement of quartz diorite of the batholith. Structural asymmetry is shown to have originated through gentle cross-folding and emplacement of minor intrusives during deformation.

Orbiniella nuda, new species, is newly described from Washington. Naineris quadricuspida, Pygospio elegans, Pherusa negligens, Asclerocheilus beringianus, Euzonus williamsi, Barantolla americana, Decamastus gracilis, Mediomastus capensis, and Stygocapitella subterranea are newly recorded from Washington or from Washington and British Columbia. Most of these species have not previously been reported from the cold temperate northeastern Pacific Ocean. In addition, new descriptive information is provided for some species.
