The first subfossil antlers of Odocoileus virginianus from Alberta are described. They were associated with fragmentary postcranial and dental remains referred to the same species and obtained from an Alberta foothills bison bone bed (Hitching Post Ranch site) 3600 radiocarbon years old. Those antlers with burrs present had been shed, suggesting derivation from resident deer, and no conclusive evidence for human predation is present. It is argued that white-tailed deer remains have potential as indicators of paleoclimatic conditions, particularly severity of winter snow.

In spite of various attempts, conclusive evidence to explain blood passage in the splenic red pulp does not seem to have been presented. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations on the rabbit spleen, originally performed by us, revealed that the sinus was lined by a perforated lattice composed of longitudinally extended rod cells and transverse cytoplasmic processes, and that perforations in the lattice were continuous to the spaces among the stellate reticulum cells of the cord. In the present study the observation was extended to the dog and rat spleens, in which the cord is more developed than in the rabbit in order to clarify the possible differences in the fine structure of the sinus wall. An attempt was also made to examine the development and distribution of macrophage in the blood passage of the red pulp.Spleens were washed and fixed by perfusion with Ringer solution and then with buffered glutaraldehyde. Small tissue cubes were dehydrated with acetone, dried in air and heated with gold. Observations were made by a JEOL SEM Type-3. One air dried tissue cube was cut into small pieces and post fixed with buffered OsO4 for examination under the transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Numerous morphological studies have dealt with the spermatheca of pulmonate gastropods. This globular organ, which is attached to the female portion of the reproductive tract by a long duct in these monoecious animals, has had various functions ascribed to it. Recent histochemical demonstrations of deoxyribonuclease, ribonuclease, protease, and acid phosphatase have provided, however, conclusive evidence that it is a digestive organ for the degradation of superfluous sperm and genital tract secretions. Only limited information concerning the spermatheca is available at the ultrastructural level, a fact providing the stimulus for the present study of this organ in Sonorella santaritana, a desert mountain snail from Arizona.

SummaryIn order to explore further the mechanism by which glycoprotein GPIIb-IIIa promotes platelet vessel wall interaction, platelet adhesion to subendothelium was studied in an annular chamber in which subendothelium from rabbit aorta was exposed at a shear rate of 2,600 s−1 to blood from patients with thrombasthenia. Perfusions were conducted for each of 5 exposure times (1 ,2,3, 5 and 10 min), and the percent surface coverage of the vessel segment with platelets in the contact (C) and spread (S) stage was determined. Increased values of platelet contact (C) were obtained in thrombasthenia at all exposure times; this finding is consistent with a defect in platelet spreadirg, based on a previously described kinetic model of platelet attachment to subendothelium. According to this model of attachment, increased values of platelet contact (C) at a single exposure time may be indicative of either a defect in spreading (S) or initial contact (C), but multiple exposures will result in increased contact only for defects which are related to defectiye platelet spreading (s).The results obtained over a broad range of exposure times provide more conclusive evidence that GPIIb-IIIa mediates platelet spreading than those previously obtained at single exposure times.

Primary prevention and secondary prevention in the context of food allergy refer to prevention of the development of sensitization (i.e., the presence of food-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) as measured by skin-prick testing and/or laboratory testing) and sensitization plus the clinical manifestations of food allergy, respectively. Until recently, interventions that target the prevention of food allergy have been limited. Although exclusive breast-feeding for the first 6 months of life has been a long-standing recommendation due to associated health benefits, recommendations regarding complementary feeding in infancy have significantly changed over the past 20 years. There now is evidence to support early introduction of peanut into the diet of infants with egg allergy, severe atopic dermatitis, or both diagnoses, defined as high risk for peanut allergy, to try to prevent development of peanut allergy. Although guideline-based recommendations are not available for early introduction of additional allergenic foods, this topic is being actively studied. There is no evidence to support additional dietary modification of the maternal or infant diet for the prevention of food allergy. Similarly, there is no conclusive evidence to support maternal avoidance diets for the prevention of food allergy.

42 years old male patient referred from neurology department, working as a teacher, educated up to MSc, premorbidly anxious personality, family history mental illness (first degree relatives), comes from MSES with presenting complaints of difficulty in writing or copying since seven years. Disability progressed and he was unable to write even a few words legibly and could not hold object which leads to anxiety and dependency. When the patient was examined at Neurology OPD, find out that he has normal sensory and motor nerve functions. The present treatment involved the use of Bahaviour therapy. The findings in this case is very encouraging and studies with large sample sizes can be considered for further conclusive evidence on the treatment of writer’s cramp.

En Guatemala, el venado Cola Blanca es de los animales cinegéticos más importantes y sin duda de los más perseguidos a pesar de eso, se han realizado pocos estudios sobre él. En la actualidad, con la formación de la colección de la Fábrica de Municiones del ejército-FME-localizada en el municipio de Cobán, en el departamento de Alta Verapaz, se busca asegurar la conservación de esta especie. El estudio consistió en observaciones diarias para determinar el comportamiento general: social, productivo, reproductivo del venado y colectas de campo realizadas en las épocas de menor y mayor precipitación, con el objeto de obtener información acerca de la calidad de las principales plantas forrajeras, mediante análisis por el método de Weende. Se cuantificó la disponibilidad del forraje, utilizando porcentajes estimados de cubierta, para las plantas herbáceas y para arbustos y árboles se usó el muestreo sistemático por medio de parcelas de 10 x 10 m. Las plantas forrajeras principales fueron hierbas graminoides por existir en mayor disponibilidad (75%), luego los arbustos (22%), y por último las especies arbóreas (3%). Los forrajes consumidos fueron generalmente de calidad inferior que los forrajes de otras latitudes. Dentro de las especies arbustivas cabe mencionar como las más importantes para el venado del área, el clavel de Panamá (Hibiscus rosasimensis),pera (Pyrus communis) y Costa Rica (Bahuinia sp.). Estas especies junto con gramíneas como Andropogon bicornis, Panicum sellowii y Paspalum conjugatum, constituyen la base alimenticia del venado Cola Blanca en la FME. Los datos presentados sobre comportamiento social, sugieren diferencias en algunas estrategias sociales y de comportamiento a una edad temprana entre la población estudiada en semicautiverio y los reportes para poblaciones que habitan áreas silvestres o en completo cautiverio. Las hembras generalmente tienen sus crías en marzo, con un pico de nacimientos al final de dicho mes, aunque este es un período que puede prolongarse hasta mediados de abril. Lo que se observa en Cobán es una estacionalidad en la época de partos, lo cual concuerda con los factores climáticos que están relacionados con la sobrevivencia de los cervatos. Se infiere que los cervatos nacidos durante los meses de marzo y abril tendrán una mayor probabilidad de sobrevivencia que aquellos nacidos después o antes de la estación.Cuando las lluvias fuertes se presentan los cervatos son capaces fisiológicamente de utilizar los recursos vegetativos disponibles para su crecimiento y desarrollo. Por otra parte, las madres se recuperan de la tensión fisiológica como consecuencia de la lactancia.

A numerical analysis of solute transport in two spatially heterogeneous fields is carried out assuming that the fields are composed of ensembles of one-dimensional non-interacting soil columns, each column representing a possible soil profile in statistical terms. The basis for the analysis is the flow simulation described in Part II (Jensen and Refsgaard, this issue), which serves as input to a transport model based on the convection-dispersion equation. The simulations of the average and variation in solute concentration in planes perpendicular to the flow direction are compared to measurements obtained from tracer experiments carried out at the two fields. Due to the limited amount of measurement data, it is difficult to draw conclusive evidence of the simulations, but reliable simulations are obtained of the mean behaviour within the two fields. The concept of equivalent soil properties is also tested for the transport problem in heterogeneous soils. Based on effective parameters for the retention and hydraulic conductivity functions it is possible to predict the mean transport in the two experimental fields.

Electronic platforms and high frequency traders (HFTs) have changed the nature of trading. Like equity markets, commodity markets have experienced an influx of algorithmic traders and a decline in “pit” or open outcry trading. Regulatory efforts to understand the effects of HFTs and to offer prudent guidelines or new rules are in their infancy. An overall hesitancy exists because academic studies have produced diverse results on liquidity, volatility, and market quality. This survey focuses on high frequency trading research in commodity derivative markets, documenting basic results and extracting inferences when warranted. Evidence indicates that HFTs act as market makers and their speed advantage has lowered transaction costs, generally during normal markets. Although not entirely conclusive, evidence also suggests that HFTs may exacerbate volatility by withdrawing liquidity in times of market stress, such as during “flash” crashes.

Japan inspires ‘The Stranger’ and ‘Nihon’, both included in The Limit and outstanding examples of Borges’s wit and craftsmanship. A comparison between ‘Nihon’ and ‘Story of the Warrior and the Captive Woman’ from an earlier collection illustrates Borges’s evolved approach to the binary opposition between civilization and barbarism, across the East–West divide. Two milongas are also studied in the context of the war in the South Atlantic (1982) and point to a disillusioned conclusion about Argentina 170 years on from formal independence in 1810.

Dense fluids and liquids molecules are in constant interaction; hence, they do not fit into the Boltzmann’s picture of a clearcut separation between free-streaming and collisional interactions. Since the interactions are soft and do not involve large scattering angles, an effective way of describing dense fluids is to formulate stochastic models of particle motion, as pioneered by Einstein’s theory of Brownian motion and later extended by Paul Langevin. Besides its practical value for the study of the kinetic theory of dense fluids, Brownian motion bears a central place in the historical development of kinetic theory. Among others, it provided conclusive evidence in favor of the atomistic theory of matter. This chapter introduces the basic notions of stochastic dynamics and its connection with other important kinetic equations, primarily the Fokker–Planck equation, which bear a complementary role to the Boltzmann equation in the kinetic theory of dense fluids.
