A numerical approach toward the classification of magnetites from tephra in southern Alberta

High-titanium glass-encased magnetites associated with intermixed tephras in upper subalpine soils in Banff National Park are shown to be characteristic of Mazama tephra and of regional significance. Similar magnetites occur in a Mazama layer above a paleosol at Fish Creek, Alberta and within a sample of Mazama ash (UA 396) from Windy Point, Alberta. Detailed sampling and analysis of the Fish Creek tephra indicate that the magnetites do not represent a separate eruptive event or an older ashfall. Cluster analysis of glass-encased magnetites from reference samples of Mazama, St. Helens Y, and Bridge River ashes revealed composite grouping of Mazama and Bridge River magnetites and separate and strong groupings of high-TiO2 magnetites. Discriminant analysis identifies MgO, TiO2, and Al2O3 as the most significant chemical discriminants between the various ashes. Discriminant function analysis identifies the high-titanium magnetites as Mazama in type and successfully classifies 96% of the tephra-derived magnetites in two soils developed from intermixed ashes. Numerical analysis confirms the utility of compositional variations in tephra-derived magnetites in providing a time-stratigraphic framework in the analysis of volcanic ash soils in western Canada.

SYNOPSISOne hundred patients, selected to be representative of those attending general practitioners with non-psychotic psychiatric disorders were followed up for one year. standard assessments of mental state, personality, social stresses and supports were carried out for each patient at the outset and after a year.The outcome for this cohort determined both by the level of psychiatric morbidity at interview after one year and by the pattern of the psychiatric morbidity during the year has been analysed with reference to the assessment measures. Discriminant function analysis indicates that the initial estimate of the severity of the psychiatric morbidity and a rating of the quality of the social life at the time of follow-up are the only factors that significantly predict the psychiatric state after one year. Social measures also predict a pattern of illness charactorized by a rapid recovery after the initial assessemtn. Patients who reported continuous psychiatric morbidity during the year were, older, physically ill and very likely to have recevied psychotropic drugs. Receipt of this medication during the year was associated with initial assessments of abnormality of personality, older age, and a diagnosis of depression.The findings of this study are seen to support a triaxial assessment and classification of non-psychotic psychiatirc disorders, with symptoms, personality and social state being rated independently.

The magnetite composition from three sets of samples of Mazama, St. Helens set Y, and Bridge River tephras from Jasper and Banff national parks are used to test whether discriminant function analysis can unambiguously distinguish these tephras. The multivariate method is found to be very sensitive to the change in reference samples. St. Helens set Y tephra is clearly distinguished. However, discrimination between Mazama and Bridge River tephras is less distinct. A set of unknown tephras from the Sunwapta Pass area was used to test the classification schemes. Unknown tephras are assigned to different tephra types depending on which reference tephra set is used in the discriminant function analysis.

Weeds, especially dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber in F.H. Wigg.), tend to infest a forage alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) stand 2 to 4 yr after establishment. To develop better weed management systems, experiments were conducted at Lethbridge, Alberta, from 1995 to 2002 and Creston, British Columbia, from 1998 to 2001, which included the alfalfa cultivars Beaver (standard type) and AC Blue J (Flemish type) and annual applications of metribuzin and hexazinone. These herbicides are registered for weed control in irrigated alfalfa in Alberta and alfalfa grown for seed. In addition, two sulfonylurea herbicides, metsulfuron and sulfosulfuron, and glyphosate were included. All of the herbicides except glyphosate controlled or suppressed dandelion and mustard family weeds. Metsulfuron at 5 g a.i. ha-1 almost completely controlled dandelion at both locations. However, after metsulfuron application at Lethbridge, dandelion was replaced with an infestation of downy brome, which is unpalatable for cattle. None of the herbicides increased total forage (alfalfa + weed) yield, and in some instances herbicides reduced forage quality by causing a shift from a palatable to an unpalatable weed species. However, it was observed that AC Blue J consistently yielded more than Beaver, and weed biomass was consistently less in the higher-yielding cultivar. AC Blue J was developed primarily for the irrigated area in southern Alberta and for southern British Columbia. Therefore, additional experiments should be conducted to determine which alfalfa cultivars have the greatest ability to compete with weeds in other regions of western Canada. A regional geochemical study of the Slave Point Formation within an area of 35 000 square miles (~90 000 km2) in the subsurface of western Canada was made to relate chemical variation to facies change. Core and cuttings samples were obtained from 90 wells drilled for petroleum. The Slave Point Formation is a relatively uniform and pure calcitic limestone of Middle Devonian age. A reef facies, dolomitized in places, is developed along the margin of the carbonate shelf with a shale basin. These dolomites produce natural gas from several fields.R-mode factor analysis methods have been used to help interpret the element distribution. There are slight, but significant, chemical differences between limestones occurring close to dolomites and gas discoveries and limestones distant from these features. The principal differences are a smaller content of magnesium and strontium held in solid solution in the calcites and less clay minerals and pyrite in limestones occurring close to gas discoveries. These differences, which are related to dissimilar conditions during deposition and diagenesis, are used to form a multivariate discriminant function separating the two groups of limestone. This discriminant function is used to classify the different limestone sections. Sphalerite (with galena and quartz), a prominent feature of the unit, occurs principally in the dolomites along the margin of the shale basin.

Several methods have been used to compare the whistles produced by dolphins. The two methods used in this study are: (1) a classification of whistle contours in six categories (i.e. constant frequency, upsweep, downsweep, concave, convex, and sine) and (2) the extraction of frequency and time parameters from each whistle contour. Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus whistles are described in the same way when comparing whistle contour distributions in each of the six categories and whistle frequency and time parameters using Discriminant Function Analysis. For Spinner Dolphin Stenella longirostris whistles, each method describes whistles differently. Several facts may explain these differences in describing dolphin whistles, such as a greater fluidity of Spinner Dolphin groups when compared to Bottlenose Dolphin groups, greater geographic variation in the whistles of Bottlenose Dolphins than in those of Spinner Dolphins, an average beginning frequency 16% lower than the average ending frequency in Spinner Dolphin whistles compared to a varied relationship for Bottlenose Dolphins, and stricter criteria used to define whistle contour categories in the study of Spinner Dolphin whistles than in the Bottlenose Dolphin whistle study.

Examination of a large number of eggshell fragments collected from the Oldman Formation of southern Alberta reveals a greater ootaxonomic diversity than is known from complete eggs or clutches. Three new oogenera and oospecies of the ornithoid-ratite morphotype and one of the ornithoid-prismatic morphotype are established, based on the eggshell fragments. Porituberoolithus warnerensis oogen. et oosp. nov. and Continuoolithus canadensis oogen. et oosp. nov. have a microstructure similar to that of elongatoolithid eggs of theropod dinosaurs. Tristraguloolithus cracioides oogen. et oosp. nov. and Dispersituberoolithus exilis oogen. et oosp. nov. possess an external zone and thus have a microstructure like modern avian eggshell. Tristraguloolithus has a shell thickness, microstructure, and surface sculpture similar to those of recent bird eggshell of the family Cracidae (order Galliformes). Dispersituberoolithus exhibits the primitive or normal eggshell condition of some recent neognathous avian taxa. The ootaxa described indicate a diversity of both avian and theropod dinosaur egg layers within Devil's Coulee and Knight's Ranch, southern Alberta, during the Late Cretaceous.

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify a distribution pattern of meat quality grade (MQG) as a function of carcass yield index (CYI) and the gender of Hanwoo (bull, cow, and steer) to determine the optimum point between both yield and quality. We also attempted to identify how pre- and post-deboning variables affect the gender-specific beef quality of Hanwoo.Methods: A total of 31 deboning variables, consisting of 7 pre-deboning and 24 post-deboning variables from bulls (n = 139), cows (n = 69), and steers (n = 153), were obtained from the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) in South Korea. The database was reconstructed to be suitable for a statistical significance test between the CYI and the MQG as well as classification of meat quality. Discriminant function analysis was used for classifying MQG using the deboning parameters of Hanwoo by gender.Results: The means of CYI according to 1+, 1, 2, and 3 of MQG were 68.64±2.02, 68.85±1.94, 68.62±5.88, and 70.99±3.32, respectively. High carcass yield correlated with low-quality grade, while high-quality meat most frequently was obtained from steers. The classification ability of pre-deboning parameters was higher than that of post-deboning parameters. Moisture and the shear force were the common significant parameters in all discriminant functions having a classification accuracy of 80.6%, 71%, and 56.9% for the bull, cow, and steer, respectively.Conclusion: This study provides basic information for predicting the meat quality by gender using pre-deboning variables consistent with the actual grading index.

Hydroacoustic data acquired for estimating fish populations contain information on both fish and non-fish targets, so sonar technicians traditionally rely on their knowledge of fish behaviour and experience with hydroacoustics to remove non-fish targets from the hydroacoustic data. This process is often labour-intensive and time-consuming, making real-time assessment of fish populations difficult. Simple solutions are not always available for all circumstances. However, the split-beam sonar data collected in the lower Fraser River, British Columbia, Canada, showed distinct signatures between actively swimming fish and non-fish objects such as drifting debris, surface bubbles, and stationary objects in the water column and off the river bottom. Acoustic tracks of fish and non-fish targets were characterized by differentiable statistical patterns that were amenable to discriminant function analysis (DFA). An application of DFA to segregate fish and non-fish targets detected by a split-beam sonar system in the lower Fraser River is presented, characteristics of user-identified fish and non-fish acoustic tracks being utilized as learning samples for the DFA. Also, a method to rank the discriminating power of individual variables is presented, providing guidance for constructing efficient and effective discriminant functions with variables that offer high discriminating power. The DFA yielded classification accuracies of 96% for fish and 91% for non-fish tracks and reduced the manual sorting time by 50–75%.

Abstract Classification of System, Component and Structure (SSC) is the base as well as high level demand of nuclear power plant. Equipment classification including electric and Instrument and Control (I&C) equipment is the precondition of correct design regulation and standard. Safety function classification is key pass of electric and I&C equipment classification. This paper researches the method of nuclear power plant electric and I&C equipment safety function classification. Firstly from view of function, it explains the importance of function classification. Then function analysis and classification of equipment is implemented by design order. Lastly from view of accident analysis, function classification is validated, and a complete approach of function classification is formed. The purpose of this paper is the NPP electric and I&C equipment safety function classification as an example, to study and summarize the method of the electric and I&C equipment safety function classification, and to provide the basis for specific items design work according to design requirements. At the same time, a practical method is provided for other similar NPP electric and I&C equipment classification work. The electric and I&C equipment function classification of nuclear power plant satisfy the basic principles requirement of relative nuclear power rules and codes. It provides an important basis of equipment classification for next nuclear power plants.
