Biotic and abiotic characteristics of ecosystems on acid metalliferous mine tailings near Sudbury, Ontario

INCO Ltd., a large mining company near Sudbury, Ont., deposits vast amounts of tailings on its property. These tailings contain elevated levels of Cu, Ni, and sulphides, and to curtail dust and acid drainage, INCO has undertaken a long-term project to cover its tailings with vegetation. Yearly amelioration of fresh tailings with limestone and fertilizer, followed by seeding with various grasses and herbs, transplanted conifers, and the later colonization of volunteer species of plants from adjoining forests, has resulted in the formation of ecosystems of varying age and complexity. To assess the long-term effectiveness of INCO's vegetation techniques, we studied floral diversity, attributes of developing soils, and the accumulation of Cu and Ni in various plant species growing on tailings at different stages of development. Habitat disturbance by tailings deposition, and its subsequent floral recolonizaton, is an example of "anthropogenic succession." Tailings that do not receive amelioration in the form of lime, fertilizer, and seeding remain free of vegetation, other than sparce clumps of the metal-tolerant grass Deschampsia caespitosa (L.) Beauv. Once amelioration begins, various species of grasses and herbs are able to subsist and within 8 years volunteer species begin to colonize. Substrate pH of dried tailings is less than 4 while the pH in upper horizons ranges from 5 to 6, increasing as the sites become more florally diverse; however, pH at lower depths remains less than 4. Substrate organic content in upper horizons at restored sites ranges from 4.5 to 5.0%. Water-soluble concentrations of Cu and Ni in upper horizons ranges from 1 to 5 µg/g dry mass, and 0.5 to 6 µg/g dry mass, respectively, and both metals decrease with increasing floral diversity. Levels of Ni increase at lower depths indicating greater substrate mobility. Levels of Cu and Ni are higher in plants from tailings than in those from control sites; however, concentrations do not decrease in plants from older and more florally diverse tailings sites. Root tissues contain significantly higher concentrations of Cu and Ni than aerial tissues. Monitoring air with moss plates indicates that dispersal of airborne metallic dust remains a problem.Key words: mine tailings, Sudbury, anthropogenic succession, copper, nickel, acid, monitoring.

Reflection about the role of community engagement and corporate social investment in Brazil, associated with the presence of a large economic enterprise, is the major stimulus of this chapter. It seeks to present how cross-sector governance can contribute to the social development of a city and how this process can be led by a partnership comprising a corporate foundation, government, and civil society. The concept of the public–private social partnership (PPSP) is explored: a strategy for building a series of inter-sectoral alliances aimed at promoting the sustainable development of territories where the company has large-scale enterprises, through joint efforts towards integrated long-term strategic planning, around a common agenda. To this end, the case of Canaã dos Carajás is introduced, a municipality in the State of Pará, in the Amazon region, where large-scale mining investment is being carried out by the mining company Vale SA.

The objective was to study the effects of sugar cane molasses addition on the fermentation quality and tastes of alfalfa silage. Fresh alfalfa was ensiled with no additive (Control), 1% molasses (M1), 2% molasses (M2), and 3% molasses (M3) for 206 days. The chemical composition and fermentation characteristics of the alfalfa silages were determined, the microbial communities were described by 16S rRNA sequencing, and the tastes were evaluated using an electronic tongue sensing system. With the amount of added molasses (M), most nutrition (dry matter and crude protein) was preserved and water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) were sufficiently used to promote the fermentation, resulting in a pH reduction from 5.16 to 4.48. The lactic acid (LA) content and LA/acetic acid (AA) significantly increased, indicating that the fermentation had turned to homofermentation. After ensiling, Enterococcus and Lactobacillus were the dominant genus in all treatments and the undesirable microbes were inhibited, resulting in lower propionic acid (PA), butyric acid (BA), and NH3-N production. In addition, bitterness, astringency, and sourness reflected tastes of alfalfa silage, while umami and sourness changed with the amount of added molasses. Therefore, molasses additive had improved the fermentation quality and tastes of alfalfa silage, and the M3 group obtained the ideal pH value (below 4.5) and the best condition for long-term preservation.

Organic and ecological farming programs require new and efficient biostimulants with beneficial properties for the sustainable and safe production of seedlings and ornamental plants. We examined the effect of non-fermented and lacto-fermented alfalfa brown juice (BJ) on seed germination and the vegetative, physiological, and anatomical properties of French marigold (Tagetes patula L. ‘Csemő’) plants which were treated with 0.5–10% fermented and non-fermented BJ, with tap water applied as a control. Applying 0.5% fermented BJ significantly improved seed germination compared with non-fermented BJ, resulting in an increase of 9.6, 11.2, 10.9, and 41.7% in the final germination percent, germination rate index, germination index, and vigor index, respectively. In addition, it increased the root and shoot length by 7.9 and 16.1%, respectively, root and shoot dry mass by 20 and 47.6%, respectively, and the number of leaves by 28.8% compared to the control. Furthermore, an increase in contents of water-soluble phenol, chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoid was reported upon the application of 0.5% fermented BJ, while peroxidase activity decreased. Our results prove that alfalfa BJ can be enrolled as a biostimulant as part of the circular farming approach which supports the sustainable horticultural practice.

A geothermal model is described that simulates simultaneous deposition, freezing, and thawing of mine tailings or sequentially placed layers of embankment soil. When layers of soil or mine tailings are placed during winter subfreezing conditions, frozen layers are formed in the soil profile that may persist with time. The following summer, warmer soil placement may not be sufficient to thaw out layers from the preceding winter. Remnant frozen soil layers may persist for many years or decades. The analysis is unique, as it involves a moving upper boundary and different surface snow cover functions applied in winter time. The model is calibrated based on two uranium mines in northern Saskatchewan. The Rabbit Lake scenario involves tailings growth to a height of 120 m over a period of 24 years. At Key Lake, tailings increase in height at a rate of 1.3 m/year. Good agreement between the observed position of frozen layers and those predicted by the model is obtained. Long-term predictions indicate that from 80 to 200 years would be required to thaw out the frozen layers formed during placement, assuming 1992 placement conditions continue. Deposition rates of 1.5-3 m/year give the largest amounts of frozen ground. The amount of frozen ground is sensitive to the assumed snow cover function during winter.Key words: geothermal, model, tailings, freezing, deposition.

Extremely small-sized superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles of 3Cit). The resulting Cit-coated magnetite nanoparticles exhibited long-term colloidal stability in aqueous media without any surface modification. Regarding the magnetic properties, the nanoparticles were superparamagnetic at room temperature, and might be the potential candidate for MRI contrast agents.

Safety of a water-proof pillar between the stoping void and the aquifers defines the key feature of water-soluble mineral mining. In this regard, the most important element of geomechanical supervision of mining operations, especially, at the mine project stage, is the engineering safety criteria aimed at the adequate valuation of safe undermining of water-proof strata (WPS). The WPS safety procedures now in force calculate only maximal sagging of undermined beds and disregard deformation in the edge area of WPS. In the meanwhile, the edges of WPS are the areas of localization of maximal horizontal strains, and the hazard of vertical jointing is the highest in these areas. In this connection, in the capacity of the index of the manmade load on WPS, it is proposed to use the maximal slope of the edge area of the subsidence trough. The evaluations were carried out in 6 Uralkali’s mine sites selected from the mathematical modeling and geophysical survey data which exhibited considerable damage of WPS. Based on the implemented research and justifications, it is recommended to use the generalized safety criterion for undermining of WPS as a maximal subsidence/mining depth ratio which is directly proportional to the ground slope. This engineering procedure describes more adequately the fracture mechanism in WPS rocks, in particular, damage localization in edge areas of the subsidence trough, or influence of mining depth on WPS stability and, which is main thing, is based on the criteria derived from the long-term observations and measurements performed in the Upper Kama deposit. Muscadine grapes ( Vitis rotundifolia ) contain significant levels of polyphenols and their antioxidant capacity may have cardiovascular benefit. We determined the cardiovascular effects of a water soluble muscadine grape extract (MGE) from Piedmont Research & Development Corporation (PRDC, Winston-Salem, NC) that we confirmed has a high content of epicatechin, gallic acid, ellagic acid and procyanidin B2. We hypothesize that this soluble MGE with a potentially high phenolic bioavailability exhibits cardioprotective actions. The effect of long-term MGE intake on blood pressure, cardiac function and exercise tolerance was established in female and male hemizygous (mRen2)27 [mRen2] transgenic rats, an Ang II-AT 1 R-dependent model of hypertension. The mRen2 were administered MGE (8 mg of total phenolics/mL) in the drinking water for 26 weeks (7 female; 7 male); control rats (9 female; 11 male) were given water only. At 40 weeks of age, exercise tolerance was assessed by treadmill (10.2 m x min -1 , 5% inclination). The MGE-treated female mRen2 exhibited a >300% improvement in workload ( W: g X m ) as compared to the untreated group [14551 ± 1313 vs. 4498 ± 481; p<0.01]. MGE intake also extended the time to fatigue (TTF) by 300% in females (4943 ± 443 vs.1615 ± 166 sec; p<0.01). In contrast, chronic intake of MGE had no effect on either exercise workload or TTF in the male mRen2. MGE intake did not alter systolic blood pressure in females (162 ± 3 vs. 166 ± 6 mm Hg, p>0.05) and males (165 ± 5 vs. 160 ± 3 mm Hg) nor alter body weight in either group [females: 334 ± 7 g vs. 339 ± 8 g; males: 613 ± 12 g vs. 590 ± 6 g). Echocardiographic analyses revealed that although the female mRen2 exhibited a higher ejection fraction [73.4±5.1 vs. 42.3±4.5%, n=4-5, p<0.05] and a higher fractional shortening [44.2±4.2 vs. 22.1±2.7%, n=4-5, p<0.05] as compared to males, MGE treatment did not improve these indices in either group. We conclude that the marked improvement in exercise capacity in older adult hypertensive females by chronic MGE intake is not accompanied by augmented cardiac performance, perhaps reflecting the lack of an effect on blood pressure. Thus, it is possible that MGE may directly impact the skeletal muscle to improve exercise in the hypertensive mRen2 females, but not the males.
