Spectrophotometric study of the effect of sodium dodecyl sulphate on the acid-base behaviour of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol

The values of the apparent dissociation constants of the azo dye 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR) have been found in the presence of sub- and supercritical concentrations of the anionogenic tenside sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and the effects of the strong electrolytes NaCl and NaNO3 were also evaluated. In both electrolytes, the pKan values initially are independent of the SDS concentration and then increase. Spectrophotometric and surface tension measurements were employed to determine the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of SDS alone and in the presence of PAR and the given electrolytes. The determined cmc values were in the range 0.20–3.02 mmol l-1 and dependent on the type and concentration of the particular additive.

The accurate measurements of surface tension of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in distilled water and in presence of 0.01M Na2SO4 and 0.01M ZnSO4 at room temperature were reported by drop weight method using a stalagmometer. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in distilled water was obtained higher than in presence of Na2SO4 and ZnSO4. Careful measurements of surface tension and viscosity of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in presence and absence of KCl in pure water and methanol-water mixed solvent media containing 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 volume fractions of methanol at 308.15 K are reported. The concentration of KCl is 0.01M. The concentration of SDS varies from 4.86×10-3 to 29.56×10-3 mol.l-1. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) increases with increase in percentage of methanol and decreases with addition of salt. The specific conductance of aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was measured from 20 to 35 ºC with an interval of 5 °C in the absence and presence of metal complexes such as [Cr(acac)2(H2O)2]Cl, K3[Fe(C2O4)3] and (NH4)4[Co(C6H5O7)2] at concentrations ranging from 2.0 × 10-4 to 8.0 x 10-4 M. The specific conductance rapidly increased at the pre-micellar region with increasing of temperature and concentration of SDS, but after critical micelle concentration (CMC) the rate of increase was slower. As the concentrations of metal complexes [Cr(acac)2(H2O)2]Cl, K3[Fe(C2O4)3] and (NH4)4[Co(C6H5O7)2] increased, the CMC of SDS decreased exponentially, which was sharp with increasing temperature. The CMC decreases due to the formation of pre-micellar aggregates of the positive counter ions of the complexes with dodecyl sulphate ions (DS-) and hydrophobic interaction between ligands of complexes and hydrophobic tail of SDS. The pre-micellar aggregate formation was essentially influenced by the counter ions binding abilities to the anionic micelle. The effect of metal complexes on lowering the CMC of SDS was found to follow the order [Cr(acac)2(H2O)2]Cl < K3[Fe(C2O4)3] < (NH4)4[Co(C6H5O7)2]. AbstractThe production of surfactant from biological and renewable sources is important as this reduces environmental hazards since the products are highly biodegradable. Oil extracted from the seed of Luffa cylindrica using hexane in a soxhlet extractor was used in the synthesis of sodium phosphate-hydroxy ethanolamide via a simple reaction mechanism. The progress of the reaction was monitored and confirmed by FTIR, 1HNMR and 13CNMR. The process used gave a yield of 88.46% of sodium phosphate-hydroxy ethanolamide. The properties of this compound were compared with those of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) used as a known reference surfactant. Important properties of sodium phosphate-hydroxy ethanolamide such as foam stability, wetting power and surface tension turned out superior to those of the known reference surfactant (SDS).

Aqueous solutions of simple alcohols exhibit many anomalies, one of which is a change in the mobility of the bubble surface. This work aimed to determine the effect of the presence of another surface-active agent on bubble rise velocity and bubble surface mobility. The motion of the spherical bubble in an aqueous solution of n-propanol and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was monitored by a high-speed camera. At low alcohol concentrations (xP < 0.01), both the propanol and SDS molecules behaved as surfactants, the surface tension decreased and the bubble surface was immobile. The effect of the SDS diminished with increasing alcohol concentrations. In solutions with a high propanol content (xP > 0.1), the SDS molecules did not adsorb to the phase interface and thus, the surface tension of the solution was not reduced with the addition of SDS. Due to the rapid desorption of propanol molecules from the bottom of the bubble, a surface tension gradient was not formed. The drag coefficient can be calculated using formulas for the mobile surface of a spherical bubble.

Precise measurements on the specific conductivity of cationic surfactant (Dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide) and anionic surfactant (Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate) in methanol water mixed solvent media containing 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 volume fractions of methanol are reported at 308.15 K. Specific conductivities of Dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide and Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate increase with increase in concentration and decrease with increase in the volume fractions of methanol.  Critical micelle concentration (cmc) increases with increase in volume fraction of methanol in case of both surfactants. Free energy of micellization (ΔGºm) has been calculated.
