A theoretical model has been set up for treating competitive hydrogenations of pairs of substrates on combined two-catalyst systems, assuming that the catalysts act in an independent manner. The hydrogenation rate constants of the two substrates and their relative adsorptitives established on the individual catalysts are used for the calculations. the model has been tested on the substrate system of 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol and 2-phenylpropene, hydrogenated in methanol or cyclohexane on combined Pt/C, Pd/C, and Rh/C catalyst systems. The calculated and observed data are in a good agreement.

The entire field of information processing in medicine is today already spread out and branched to such an extent that it is no longer possible to set up a survey on relevant literature as a whole. But even in narrow parts of medical informatics it is hardly possible for the individual scientist to keep up to date with new literature. Strictly defined special bibliographies on certain topics are most helpful.In our days, problems of optimal patient scheduling and exploitation of resources are gaining more and more importance. Scientists are working on the solution of these problems in many places.The bibliography on »Patient Scheduling« presented here contains but a few basic theoretical papers on the problem of waiting queues which are of importance in the area of medical care. Most of the papers cited are concerned with practical approaches to a solution and describe current systems in medicine.In listing the literature, we were assisted by Mrs. Wieland, Mr. Dusberger and Mr. Henn, in data acquisition and computer handling by Mrs. Gieß and Mr. Schlaefer. We wish to thank all those mentioned for their assistance.

For (Z)-(Z)-N-(λ5-phosphanylidene) formohydrazonic formic anhydride, Aza-Wittig reaction and Mumm rearrangement are studied using both density functional and coupled cluster theories. For this purpose, two different products starting from one substrate are considered that are competing with each other. The obtained products, P1 and P2, are thermodynamically favorable. The product of the aza-Wittig reaction, P1, is more stable than the product of Mumm rearrangement (P2). For the mentioned products, just one reliable pathway is separately proposed based on unimolecular reaction. Therefore, the rate constants based on RRKM theory in 300-600 K temperature range are calculated. Results show that the P1 generation pathway is a suitable path due to low energy barriers than the path P2. The first path has three steps with three transition states, TS1, TS2, and TS3. The P2 production path is a single-step reaction. In CCSD level, the computed barrier energies are 14.55, 2.196, and 10.67 kcal/mol for Aza-Wittig reaction and 42.41 kcal/mol for Mumm rearrangement in comparison with the corresponding complexes or reactants. For final products, the results of the computational study are in a good agreement with experimental predictions.

The kinetics of liquid-phase isothermal esterification of POCl3 with 2-isopropylphenol and 4-isopropylphenol have been studied within the temperature intervals of 110 to 130 and 90 to 110 °C, respectively. The rate constants and activation energies of the individual steps of this three-step reaction have been calculated from the values measured. The reaction rates of the two isomers markedly differ: at 110 °C 4-isopropylphenol reacts faster by the factors of about 7 and 20 for k1 and k3, respectively. This finding can be utilized in preparation of mixed triaryl phosphates, since the alkylation mixture after reaction of phenol with propene contains an excess of 2-isopropylphenol over 4-isopropylphenol.

ABSTRACT Thaler and Sunstein (2008) advance the concept of ‘nudge’ policies—non-regulatory and non-fiscal mechanisms designed to enlist people's cognitive biases or motivational deficits so as to guide their behaviour in a desired direction. A core assumption of this approach is that policymakers make artful use of people's cognitive biases and motivational deficits in ways that serve the ultimate interests of the nudged individual. We analyse a model of dynamic policymaking in which the policymaker's preferences are not always aligned with those of the individual. One novelty of our set-up is that the policymaker has the option to implement a ‘boost’ policy, equipping the individual with the competence to overcome the nudge-enabling bias once and for all. Our main result identifies conditions under which the policymaker chooses not to boost in order to preserve the option of using the nudge (and its associated bias) in the future—even though boosting is in the immediate best interests of both the policymaker and the individual. We extend our analysis to situations in which the policymaker can be removed (e.g., through an election) and in which the policymaker is similarly prone to bias. We conclude with a discussion of some policy implications of these findings.

AbstractWe have set up an experimental device to optically study the scattering properties of dust particles. Measurements over the 8 — 174° interval of scattering angles are performed on a continuously flowing dust loaded jet illuminated by a polarized red HeNe laser beam. The scattering is averaged over the population of the dust particles in the jet, which can be determined independently, and give the “volume scattering function” for the two directions of polarization directly. While results for spherical particles are in good agreement with Mie theory, those for arbitrary particles show conspicuous deviations.

This article explores concepts of teacher responsibility, accountability, being in loco parentis, and responsibilization as many advanced capitalist societies have dropped policies and practices that were set up in the mid 19th century after the Great Depression in the welfare state under Keynesian economics. Since the early 1980s most of these states have adopted neoliberal policies and market rationality for all aspects of social policy including education. Under neoliberalism, the subject theorised by Homo economicus, is one that is theorised as a rational autonomous individual, with its responsibilized behavior underpinning much of how not only teachers but students now are compleed to behace and perform. These have resulted in major shifts in attitudes to professionalism of teachers, in responsibilising individuals and so have impacted on subjectivity as the state has pulled back from all manner of social provision and has responsibilized the individual to be a consumer-citizen, a prudential and entrepreneurial self even in terms of education. The upshot is increasing use of audits, checklists and accountability regimes for teachers who are becoming increasingly a de-professionalised in a low-trust managerialist environment with students as consumers.

The susceptibility to bias error of two methods for computing transfer (frequency response) functions from spectra produced by FFT-based analyzers using random excitation has been investigated. Results from tests with an FFT analyzer on a single degree-of-freedom system set up on an analogue computer show good agreement with the theoretical predictions. It has been shown that, around resonance, the bias error in the transfer function estimate H2 (Syy/Sxy*) is considerably less than that in the more commonly used estimate, H1 (Sxy/Sxx). The record length, and hence the testing time, required for a given accuracy is reduced by over 50 percent if the H2 calculation procedure is used. The analysis has also shown that if shaker excitation is used on lightly damped structures with low modal mass, it is important to minimize the mass of the force gage and the moving element of the shaker.

The folding carton is a widely used packaging solution. Recent European Union packaging legislation has forced carton manufacturers to use lighter-weight grades of carton board. This typically results in a reduction in board stiffness, which can lead to decreased process efficacy or even prevent successful processing. In order to overcome this, end-users lower production rates and fine-tune packaging machine settings for each pack and material. This trial-and-error approach is necessary because the rules relating machine set-up to pack design and material properties are not generally well known. The present study addresses this fundamental issue through the creation of a finite-element computer simulation of carton processing. Mechanical testing was performed to ascertain the key mechanical properties of the carton walls and creases. The carton model was validated against the experimental results and was then subjected to the machine-material interactions that take place during complex packaging operations. The overall approach was validated and the simulation showed good agreement with the physical system. The results of the simulation can be used to determine guidelines relating machine set-up criteria to carton properties. This will improve responsiveness to change and will ultimately allow end-users to process thinner lighter-weight materials more effectively.
