Scale-up of stirred crystallisers. Batch precipitation of aluminium potassium sulphate

Aluminium potassium sulphate has been precipitated batchwise by mixing equal volumes of 0.6 mol/l solutions of potassium sulphate and aluminium sulphate with eventual addition of water in advance. The experiments were performed at 20 and 25 °C in the volume 100 to 200 cm3 and in the volume 0.021 m3. From the size distribution of product crystals, the mean size of crystals has been evaluated and calculated the system kinetic constant of crystallization BN. The system constant is different in both series of experiments and can be correlated with the size of the crystallizer or with mixing intensity. Its value and the value of relative kinetic exponent g/n is comparable with the values obtained in experiments with cooling of solutions.

The crystallization of potassium aluminium sulphate was conducted by cooling a solution saturated at 70°C to a temperature of 25°C at three various cooling rates. The measurements were performed on a small scale (160 cm3) and a large laboratory scale (0.021 m3). The mean size of product crystals was determined by sieve analysis, and the system constant, BN, was calculated using previously derived relations. The BN value is the same, within experimental error, for all the experiments and scales, indicating that agitated-vessel cooling crystallizers can be modelled successfully even on a very small laboratory scale.

Lead iodide was precipitated by a procedure in which an aqueous solution of potassium iodide at a concentration of 0.03, 0.10 or 0.20 mol l-1 was stirred while an aqueous solution of lead nitrate at one-half concentration was added at a constant rate. The mean size of the PbI2 crystals was determined by evaluating the particle size distribution, which was measured sedimentometrically. The dependence of the mean crystal size on the duration of the experiment exhibited a minimum for any of the concentrations applied. The reason for this is discussed.

ABSTRACTNanodiamonds (NDs) represent a novel nanomaterial applicable from biomedicine to spintronics. Here we study ability of air annealing to further decrease the typical 5 nm NDs produced by detonation synthesis. We use atomic force microscopy (AFM) with sub-nm resolution to directly measure individual detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) on a flat Si substrate. By means of particle analysis we obtain their accurate and statistically relevant size distributions. Using this approach, we characterize evolution of the size distribution as a function of time and annealing temperature: i) at constant time (25 min) with changing temperature (480, 490, 500°C) and ii) at constant temperature (490°C) with changing time (10, 25, 50 min). We show that the mean size of DNDs can be controllably reduced from 4.5 nm to 1.8 nm without noticeable particle loss and down to 1.3 nm with 36% yield. By air annealing the size distribution changes from Gaussian to lognormal with a steep edge around 1 nm, indicating instability of DNDs below 1 nm.

A rapid survey of the density and size distribution of recently exploited populations of Holothuria scabra in Mahout Bay (Ghubbat Hashish Bay) was carried out at six fishing sites. The results showed that population densities varied between 1170 and 4000 individuals ha-1 and biomass ranged between 393 and 2903 kg ha-1. The mean size of sea cucumbers and population densities were much lower in populations closer to human settlements, suggestive of overfishing. The sex ratio was estimated to be 1:1 and the size distributions of males and females did not differ significantly. The length-weight relationship for both sexes was calculated as W (g) = 0.033 Length (mm) 2.178.

Due to its interesting physical and chemical properties, zinc oxide (ZnO) is considered one of the front runners of numerous metal oxide semiconductors. In this paper, ZnO nanostructure are synthesised by hydrothermal method with trisodium citrate (TC) as the emulsfying agent. The mean diameetr of ZnO nanostructure are observed with increment of reaction temperature. The mean size results into no change to mean diameter upon increment of reaction temperature but the cumulative frequencies of size distribution showing ZnO nanostructure synthesised in higher temperature to have narrower size distribution. The addition of TC also results into much smaller ZnO nanostructure with mean diameter 8nm

The hazes of freshly bottled and aged pale lager beers determined with the 12° and 90° dual angle laboratory hazemeters and 10° to 90° range photogoniometer were compared and evaluated. The instruments were standardised in EBC formazin units. In freshly bottled beer, the forward (12°–25°) haze values were smaller approximately by a factor of three than the nephelometric (90°) values which yielded 0.33 EBC units. In aged beer, the forward haze was greater than the nephelometric one. Whereas the aged beer showed the greatest and the fresh beer the lowest intensity of scattered light, the formazin suspension intensity was in between. Due to the standardisation of the beer scattered intensities by relation to that of formazin, the standardised nephelometric haze in non-aged beer was greater than the forward haze, and vice versa in aged beer. The greater forward than the nephelometric haze in aged beer was caused by the growth of haze particles above the mean size of formazin particles which was larger than 2 μm as confirmed by the particle size distribution measurement.

Positron lifetime spectroscopy was employed for investigation of the size distribution of free volume holes in Nafion N-1110 membrane. Size distribution of free volume holes was determined in the as-received and dried membrane and in the membrane immersed in water at various temperatures. It was found that absorbed water causes reduction of the mean size of free volume holes and increase of their dispersion and concentration. This indicates that free volumes are split by swollen ionic clusters absorbing water. The kinetics of water uptake and the amount of absorbed solvent was determined by in-situ measurement of the weight increase.

Grain size parameters and clay mineralogical analyses were used to characterize and compare Okareka Ash and post-Okareka tephric loess sampled at eight sites on a transect in Rotorua district, North Island, New Zealand. Grain size distribution analyses show consistently lower mean size and better sorting of the tephric loess compared with the Okareka Ash. The mean grain size of the loess is strongly influenced by the mean grain size of the tephra. Trends in the distribution of biotite and halloysite support the grain size distribution analyses. Taken with field observations, the analytical evidence allows differentiation between Okareka Ash and overlying associated tephric loess.

AbstractMagnesium oxide crystallites having mean dimensions in the range of 25–1000 A can be prepared by controlled thermal decomposition of the carbonate.Following some earlier investigations of Birks and Friedman, we have determined the mean size and size distribution of several such MgO samples from the broadened X-ray diffraction lines which they exhibit. Contrary to the procedure of the above investigators, the harmonic analysis due to Stokes has been used to correct for instrumental broadening and values of mean-size and size-distribution functions obtained from the Fourier coefficients by the methods of Warren and Averbach.The results obtained are compared with average sizes and distributions obtained by direct examination of the samples in an electron microscope.A composite sample has been prepared by mixing known quantities of the sample previously studied. The distribution function obtained by harmonic analysis of one diffraction line of the composite sample is compared with the function calculated from the distributions of its components.Conclusions are drawn concerning the significance of the results obtained by the Warren technique: in particular, the average sizes obtained by this method are compared with those given by the approximate method used by Birks and Friedman.
