Vapor transport of silver and gold in basaltic lava flows

Abstract We documented occurrences of native copper (Cu), silver (Ag), and gold (Au) in a pāhoehoe flow from Kīlauea volcano (Hawaii, USA), an a‘ā flow from Mauna Loa volcano (Hawaii), and a mid-oceanic-ridge basalt (MORB) from the Chile Ridge (southeastern Pacific Ocean). Native Ag in Kīlauea and MORB samples consistently contained minor Cl (<1 wt%). Native Ag in Hawaiian basalts can occur at the center of nearly circular patches of relatively evolved minerals, which presumably formed after late-stage silicate liquid infilled pipe vesicles. Sulfur loss and oxidation of a Cu-sulfide phase can explain the native Cu, but not Au and Ag deposition. The rare occurrence of native Cu-Au-Ag alloys and the large native Au and Ag grain size suggest separate metal precipitation mechanisms. A fractional crystallization and degassing model envisions initial Au and Ag enrichment in crystallizing interstitial liquid and further enrichment in a separating vapor phase. From the flow interior, the metals ascend through ephemeral pipe vesicles as bisulfide (Au) or chloride (Ag) vapor complexes and precipitate in the transition zone below the upper vesicular zone, owing to temperature and oxidation state changes. Our results support igneous vapor transport of ore elements in mafic plutonic systems and imply preconcentration of gold during lava solidification before later hydrothermal remobilization.

SummaryThe appearance of antibodies to factor VIII in the blood of previously normal people is a very rare occurrence but when it does happen the haemorrhagic condition which results can be very serious and difficult to treat.From experience of three cases described here it is recommended that treatment be witheld unless there is serious haemorrhage in which case steroids, large doses of cryoprecipitate or other human AHG should be given. In the case of life endangering haemorrhages it is justified to use the much more potent animal AHG preparations along with an immuno-suppressive drug.

AbstractWe investigate by photoluminescence (PL) nominally undoped, commercially available Zinc Oxide substrates (from Eagle Picher) grown by seeded chemical vapor transport technique in order to identify residual donors and acceptors. In low temperature PL spectra the dominant emission comes from the decay of bound exciton lines at around 3.36 eV. Zeeman measurements allow the identification of the two strongest lines and some weaker lines in-between as donorrelated. From the associated two-electron satellite lines binding energies of the major donors of 48 meV and 55 meV, respectively, can be deduced.

The effectiveness of manufacturing equipment use taking into account its productivity and reliability for faulty parts of transmission units in municipal buses is estimated. The on-line mode is the most effective method of control allowing the tracking of the processes of technical state changes in municipal buses. As a result of monitoring there were obtained selected data on PAZ-3205 municipal bus operated under winter conditions in the city of Ohrenburg. During the trip there was recorded 39.1 l/100km petrol consumption. The residual life of the PAZ-3205 municipal bus was 1800km.
