The explicit breaking of the axial symmetry by quantum fluctuations gives rise to the so-called axial anomaly. This phenomenon is solely responsible for the decay of the neutral pion π0 into two photons (γγ), leading to its unusually short lifetime. We precisely measured the decay width Γ of the π0→ γγ process. The differential cross sections for π0 photoproduction at forward angles were measured on two targets, carbon-12 and silicon-28, yielding Γ(π0→ γγ)=7.798±0.056(stat.)±0.109(syst.) eV, where stat. denotes the statistical uncertainty and syst. the systematic uncertainty. We combined the results of this and an earlier experiment to generate a weighted average of Γ(π0→ γγ)=7.802±0.052(stat.)±0.105(syst.) eV. Our final result has a total uncertainty of 1.50% and confirms the prediction based on the chiral anomaly in quantum chromodynamics.

The energy dependence of the electric dipole amplitude, the total and differential cross-sections of the photoproduction of neutral pions off protons near threshold is given. The amplitude of process is a sum of the LET prediction and the additional term connected with the chiral symmetry breaking interaction. The simple K-matrix calculations are used to estimate the change in the electric dipole amplitude and the total and differential cross-sections between π0p and π+n thresholds.

Pion charge-exchange (π-p→π0n) differential cross sections are one of the basic sources of information on neutral pion-nucleon resonances. We present new, high statistics, high quality charge-exchange differential cross-section data obtained in the incident π- momentum range 650–750 MeV/c. The total uncertainty of the measurements is 6% or less. 648 new data points were obtained using the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer covering 94% of the full solid angle. Our data show deviations from the results of the partial–wave analysis for some momenta, in particular at very backward angles. We also report on a search for the cusp effect in π-p→π0n at the opening of the π-p→ηn channel.
