AbstractPhenomena of friction, wear, and noise in mechanical contacts are particularly important in the field of tribomechanics but equally complex if one wants to represent their exact relationship with mathematical models. Efforts have been made to describe these phenomena with different approaches in past. These efforts have been compiled in different reviews but most of them treated friction, wear mechanics, and acoustic noise separately. However, an in-depth review that provides a critical analysis on their interdependencies is still missing. In this review paper, the interdependencies of friction, wear, and noise are analysed in the mechanical contacts at asperitical level. The origin of frictional noise, its dependencies on contact’s mechanical properties, and its performance under different wear conditions are critically reviewed. A discussion on the existing mathematical models of friction and wear is also provided in the last section that leads to uncover the gap in the existing literature. This review concludes that still a comprehensive analytical modelling approach is required to relate the interdependencies of friction, noise, and wear with mathematical expressions.

The generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) method is a common algorithm to enhance audio signals using a microphone array. Distortion of the enhanced audio signal consists of two parts: the residual acoustic noise and the distortion of the desired audio signal, which means that the desired audio signal is damaged. This paper proposes a modified GSC method to reduce both kinds of distortion when the desired audio signal is a non-stationary speech signal. First, the cross-correlation coefficient between the canceling signal and the error signal of the least mean square (LMS) algorithm was added to the adaptive process of the GSC method to reduce the distortion of the enhanced signal while the energy of the desired signal frame was increased suddenly. The sidelobe pattern of beamforming was then presented to estimate the noise signal in the beamforming output signal of the GSC method. The noise component of the beamforming output signal was decreased by subtracting the estimated noise signal to improve the denoising performance of the GSC method. Finally, the GSC-SN-MCC method was proposed by merging the above two methods. The experiment was performed in an anechoic chamber to validate the proposed method in various SNR conditions. Furthermore, the simulated calculation with inaccurate noise directions was conducted based on the experiment data to inspect the robustness of the proposed method to the error of the estimated noise direction. The experiment data and calculation results indicated that the proposed method could reduce the distortion effectively under various SNR conditions and would not cause more distortion if the estimated noise direction is far from the actual noise direction.

AbstractGlobal population growth, urbanization, and climate change worsen the immediate environment of many individuals. Elevated concentrations of air pollutants, higher levels of acoustic noise, and more heat days, as well as increasingly complex mixtures of pollutants pose health risks for urban inhabitants. There is a growing awareness of the need to record personal environmental conditions (“the human exposome”) and to study options and implications of adaptive and protective behavior of individuals. The vast progress in smart technologies created wearable sensors that record environmental as well as spatio-temporal data while accompanying a person. Wearable sensing has two aspects: firstly, the exposure of an individual is recorded, and secondly, individuals act as explorers of the urban area. A literature review was undertaken using scientific literature databases with the objective to illustrate the state-of-the-art of person-based environmental sensing in urban settings. We give an overview of the study designs, highlight and compare limitations as well as results, and present the results of a keyword analysis. We identify current trends in the field, suggest possible future advancements, and lay out take-home messages for the readers. There is a trend towards studies that involve various environmental parameters and it is becoming increasingly important to identify and quantify the influence of various conditions (e.g., weather, urban structure, travel mode) on people’s exposure.
