Nitrate salt is important heat transfer and storage medium in solar thermal power system, but nitrate salt leakage and pollution in groundwater is seldom investigated. In this paper, the nitrate salt leakage and migration in the soil after rainfall are simulated and analyzed. During the nitrate leakage process, the liquid nitrate will solidify, and then a thin solidification layer of nitrate forms. According to the simulation result, the radius of the leakage opening mainly affects the radius of nitrate solidification layer, while the leakage velocity will influence the radius and thickness of salt layer. During the nitrate migration process after rainfall, the nitrate will gradually migrate to the groundwater, and the final migration domain of nitrate in the soil will be mainly determined by the radius of nitrate solidification layer.

An original air-conditioning system was developed which requires considerably less power than conventional systems while providing identical cooling and dehumidification. The 50 percent (depending on application) power reduction is accomplished by off-peak compressor operation and storage of chilled water. The full cooling and dehumidification is accomplished by means of a new thermodynamic cycle involving two evaporators with an intermediate condenser operating with the stored chilled water. The system was built, instrumented, and operated reliably. Evaluation of performance data confirmed the theory and verified the power reduction, cooling, and dehumidification performance calculations.

ABSTRACTThe paper was prepared by an informal working party as an introduction to an open forum discussion. It considers from several viewpoints the relationship between the actuary and the computer, both in its function as a calculating tool and as a data processing and storage medium. The paper considers in detail the requirements of the Appointed Actuary for adequate data, the problems of allocating and pricing for computer costs and the increasing uses of computer modelling in financial reporting. The place of computer literacy in actuarial education, future developments and standards are also considered.


Seasonal and annual performance data are available on only a limited number of the several thousand solar space heating systems now in operation. The emerging information indicates that most of the heat required in buildings can be supplied by solar energy delivered from flat-plate collectors and stored overnight in tanks of water and bins of rock pebbles. Numerous mechanical and operational problems, mainly in liquid collection and storage systems, demand attention. Annual costs of solar heating equipment and its installation usually exceed current values of energy savings, but fuel prices are expected to escalate at rates which often favour solar purchase today. Detailed performance data on several types of solar heating and cooling systems in buildings of identical design are presented, compared and interpreted. Maintenance and repair requirements are noted and contrasted, and forecasts of use in various applications are presented.
