ABSTRACTOptical amplifiers promise to revolutionize optical communication. Erbium-doped silica fiber amplifiers operating at 1.5 μm are now commercially available while the performance of devices using neodymium or praseodymium doped fiber in the 1.3 gtm telecommunications window are improving rapidly. This review discusses the importance of host material on amplifier characteristics.
