AbstractThe dependence of the extinction coefficient on salinity was investigated for both NaCl-ice and salt-ice made from natural sea-water. Specimens were prepared under a variety of conditions and examined over the wavelength range 4 000 to 8 000 Â. The effects of scattering from air bubbles trapped in the ice were examined for ice made from distilled water. It was found that the method of preparing samples markedly affected their structure, but that, when prepared in the same manner, salt-ice made from natural sea-water and NaCl-ice did not show significantly different transmission properties. It was found that, for a wavelength of 6 328 Â, the data could be fit to the relationwithin an uncertainty of 26%, wherekeis the extinction coefficient, xis the salinity of the ice in g/kg. Within an uncertainty of 10%, there was no variation in transmission for ice at the same temperature and salinity over the wavelength range 4 000 to 8 000 Â. All measurements were made at a temperature of -20° C.

Optical constants of olivine – (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 and magnetite – Fe3O4 are presented for the wavelength range from near infrared to far ultraviolet. A feature occurs in the optical constants of olivine at about 1460 Å, but no structure that could give rise to a 2200 Å interstellar feature is found. The most peculiar characteristic of the magnetite results is the large change of optical properties with temperature in the infrared.

The computer aid simulation of optical properties of thin films has been used to optimize SiO2/TiO2/SiO2 multilayer films to obtain high transparent films in this paper. The maximum transmittance at the visible light wavelength range is proper criteria for optical films optimizing design. The effect of design parameters (film thickness and refractive index) on optical properties of SiO2/TiO2/SiO2 multilayer films were also discussed in detail. According to the result of optimization, high quality SiO2/TiO2/SiO2 multilayer film with a maximum of > 99% at visible light wavelength range can be achieved on the glass.

Ellipsometric investigation of the optical properties of YFe2 and TbFe2 intermetalic compounds have been carried out in wavelength range of 0.22 –15 μm. A number of electronic and spectral characteristic was determined. Nature of interband light absorption in these materials is discussed on base of comparative analyses of experimental and theoretical optical conductivity spectra. Experimental optical conductivities of the compounds are shown to conform qualitatively to spectra calculated from densities of electronic states in the region of quantum electron transitions.
